Did The Chargers Screw Themselves for Next Season?
This is why they may have done it. Next season, there may be 18 games scheduled instead of 16. If that is the case, the two extra games will probably come from the same Conference. Right now, a team plays all four teams in one division within their conference, and plays the team that finished with the same divisional ranking in the other two divisions.
If the season expands, the new set up would be the same with this important exception. The #1 and #2 teams in each division would play the #1 and #2 teams in the other divisions, except the division where they play all four teams. The #3 and #4 teams would play the #3 and #4 teams in those other divisions. By the Chargers winning at Denver, they finish in 2nd place. A loss would have found them in 3rd place in the AFC West, because Oakland defeated them twice. The difference is this. Instead of playing Cleveland and Tennessee at home, and Houston and Cincinnati away, they now get to play Pitt and Jacksonville at home, and Baltimore and Indianapolis away. That is a huge difference. Remember, this is only for an 18 game schedule, if the NFL goes to such a schedule and adopts that type of scheduling for the extra games. Both are expected to pass.

They sure did, but what else is new. I really hope, for the players sake, that the Charger ownership sells the team quickly. As long as the Chargers remain under the same ownership, they will never play to their true abilities. I hope that they stay in San Diego, because L.A. is a real toilet. Better yet, they can move to Anaheim, and get the best of both worlds.

also i dont think they've hammered out where the extra 2 games would come from yet if such a proposal would be accepted by the players

If the proposal gets the blessing of the owner, it matters not what the players want. They are in the short end of the rope on these negotiations. The good news (unless you are a NASCAR fan) is that there is no way in hell that these games will be added onto the front end of the schedule. The NFL wants these games played in January, when the weather is cold and miserable, compared to August or September, when the weather is beautiful and everyone is headed out for those last minute Summer Vacations. They will get a lot more viewers on January, than August or September, even if most of the games are meaningless.
