Question Did Tony Dungy owe it to Cleveland to play Manning longer?

I must admit it was great to see the way Tom Coughlin coached against the Patriots Saturday while Dungy did the complete opposite.

Shouldn't there be a policy that if the game is meaningful to any team - that you play your best throughout the game!

I know the Browns and fans would probably agree!

Thoughts?

Personally, I don't think so. I think you owe it to your organization and fans and players to do what's best for YOUR organization as a whole. I don't think coaches owe anything to anybody except the team that hired them and the city they play for........

I agree to a certain degree but that is why I think if there was an actual rule in place then it would take it out of the coaches hands. I just think it's not right for a 10-6 team to have to have their playoffs in the hands of a backup that never plays

Certainly feel for Cleveland - wish they would have gotten in over Tennessee. But, if they would have taken care of business in Week 16 @ Cincy, it wouldn't have been in Dungy's hands. Same thing with Minnesota Week 16 at home, no less, vs. Washington. They both controlled their own destiny and blew the opportunity.

That is a good point. I just hate that week 17 of the NFL seems more like the preseason than a regular game and that I have a little more respect for Tom Coughlin now.

Coughlin played his players cause NYG had played like dogcrap the past few weeks so they needed to work some kinks out

Now Dallas is the one who will get burned by going thru the motions....they are 1 and done

Agree, thought the NE/NYG game had a "playoff" flavor to it, and that wouldn't have been the case if Coughlin had played the scrubs.........

Also very true, but does make for some good wagering opportunities......

What about Tampa? - they kind of rested for last 2 weeks and although I have then beating the Giants - I can see NY possibly winning that one

i actually thought dungy would throw in Manning for the last 2 min drive. figured it would be good practice as it could come up again during playoffs.

Take care of your own business and you don't need to worry about somebody else helping you out or having to play their starters. Browns should of worried about this when they lost to the Bengals, they take care of their own business then they didn't need somebody else to help them out. The only thing a team owes is to its fans and its owns players. Manning and company play the whole game and end up getting hurt is the NFL going to give them a bye or a break on how long before they are allowed to play their playoff game? If Manning breaks his arm and is out 6-8 weeks will the NFL wait to play their playoff game for 6-8 weeks? If the answer is no, then the Colts or any other team owe no other team or the NFL anything in my opinion.
