Goodell addresses gambling issues

My opinion is the NFL likes to have it both ways on this issue. Think they are playing a dangerous game when they endorse certain aspects of gambling when it suits their interests, while on the other hand lashing out at others. Believe me, his league would get alot less interest if fantasy football and gambling were not a part of peoples interest.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday he does not see a conflict between the NFL embracing partnerships with state lotteries and taking a hard-line stance on sports betting that was approved in Delaware last month.
Goodell told Bob Glauber of Newsday that the league is not intending to be "high and mighty" on gambling, but wants to distance itself from gambling on the outcome of games.
NFL owners approved a policy last month in which teams can collaborate with state lotteries on games featuring teams' names and logos.
About lotteries, Goodell told Newsday, "It’s a game of chance and it’s a scratch off. The outcome of our game, that’s a much different issue. We’re not making a statement about nobody should gamble."
The NFL has held open the possibility that it may file suit to stop the Delaware law that is set to bring legalized sports gambling to the state. (Such gambling is already legal in Nevada.)
Goodell told Newsday the league is not trying to make a "social statement whether gambling is good, bad or indifferent."
"All we know is how it impacts on us. The issue is that legal or illegal sports gambling on the outcome or our games does impact us and the integrity of our game and we want people to understand that it’s something we remain opposed to. The lotteries are something that’s become more and more involved as stadiums are getting built. People are using lottery revenues to build stadiums and using lottery revenues for educational purposes. It’s something that’s become accepted in our world. We have not crossed over the line

I agree Gerk.

They also know gambling has helped the NFL in a large way.

Absolutely agree if why else would we care about the shitty Thursday night package on Nfl network. If I didn't have money on the games I wouldn't have sat through Gumbel

Total lip service. Goodell knows that the NFL is dead without wagreing. He is being totally hypocritical. He thinks that if the NFL speaks out against any form of gambling, his players will not get involved. Stupid thinking. If a player or ref is going to get involve (and I am NOT saying that they are), what Goodell says will not matter to them. Do you really think that NFL players do not wager on the outcome of games? That's a lot of players to consider.

Agreed. How many people would not even bother watching the NFL on a regular basis if they did not have a little action on the games? My guess is that it would be a rather substantial number.

Sports breeds loyalty between a person and their team of choice. Gambling breeds interest beyond the team that person is loyal to.

I love Denver, but if not for gambling, why the **** would I care about Philadelphia, or San Francisco, or Green Bay? Gambling rules!

My point exactly. The NFL would become a league where local fans would only watch their favorite team, instead of the interest a large number of fans have on every game they have action on.
