Jason Garrett to stay with Dallas Cowboys

11:13 AM CST on Thursday, January 17, 2008
By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News
tarcher@dallasnews.com

IRVING – Jason Garrett is staying with the Dallas Cowboys.

After going through second interviews with Baltimore and Atlanta, and having been offered the Ravens' job earlier in the week, Garrett has decided to continue his work as the Cowboys' offensive coordinator.

"We did negotiate with Jason Garrett to become our head coach. In the end, he decided to stay in Dallas," the Ravens said in a statment.

Garrett, who just finished his third season as an NFL assistant after a 12-year playing career, and owner/general manager Jerry Jones met Wednesday night after Garrett returned from a meeting with Falcons officials.

It's not known whether Jones sweetened the financial pot for Garrett to stay, but in 2004 Jones was able to keep then-defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and then-assistant head coach Sean Payton from taking jobs at Nebraska and with the Oakland Raiders, respectively, by giving them $1 million base salaries.

One thing Jones could not do was guarantee Garrett he would succeed Wade Phillips.

Had Garrett taken either the Baltimore or the Atlanta job, he would have to go through a pain-staking process of finding a quarterback in hopes of rebuilding offenses that finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively, in 2007.

With the Cowboys, he has an offense that finished ranked No. 3 in the NFL in 2007 and had seven Pro Bowlers, including quarterback Tony Romo, tight end Jason Witten and receiver Terrell Owens.

If the Cowboys can duplicate that kind of success in 2008, Garrett will continue to be the hot commodity for head coaching searches.

In staying, the Cowboys can keep continuity on the offensive side of the football even with losing assistant head coach Tony Sparano Wednesday to Miami.

He knows Wade Phillips can't possibly meet the expectations in Dallas and Jerry probably told him, look I can't fire the guy after he goes 13-3. Let's give him another year to dissappoint and the job is yours. lol

Well, we wasted all that money on R. Williams - why should anything else be different...

that being said, I like the move. Besides - it doesn't go against the cap

Besides the fact that you would have CRAP in Balty or ATL.

I read today in the Dallas Morning News that Troy Aikman said Jerry wanted to hire Jason Garrett in 2000 as QB coach/ Backup QB....so Jerry's been high on Jason for awhile. He aint going nowhere.
