Jets are up to something

O'Connell traded to Jets
Link|Comments (12) Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff September 6, 2009 02:15 PM
Former Patriots quarterback Kevin O'Connell has been traded to the New York Jets.

O'Connell was waived by the Patriots last Monday and was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Lions, who used the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft to select Matthew Stafford.

The Lions turned around today and traded O'Connell to the Jets. O'Connell confirmed his trade, which was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, via an email to the Globe.

It's interesting that the Jets would trade for O'Connell considering like Detroit they drafted their quarterback of the future, Mark Sanchez, with the No. 5 overall pick in April's draft.

New York also has Kellen Clemens and Erik Ainge, who like O'Connell is entering just his second NFL season.

It's possible that Rex Ryan is looking for an edge by bringing in O'Connell to get information on the Patriots, who play the Jets at the Meadowlands on Sept. 20.

THIS LOOKS LIKE A TRADE WITH DENVER LINING UP FOR BRANDON MARSHALL,OF COURSE A LITTLE INFO ON THE PATS ON HIS WAY OUT THE DOOR WOULD NOT HURT LOL!!!DENVER COACH AND O'CONNELL HAVE CONNECTION AND THE BRONCOS ALSO PUT A BID ON HIM ON THE WAIVER WIRE,SOMETHING IS UP

Gregg Easterbrook believes we’ve just seen the tip of the iceberg on the cheting scandal involving the New England Patriots and that it could knock the NFL off its perch as the world’s most popular sports league.

And the Patriots’ cheating might have been more extensive than so far confirmed. Fox Sports reported that former NFL players believe Belichick had microphones installed in the shoulder pads of defensive linemen so the Patriots could tape other teams’ offensive audibles and line calls. Needless to say, putting microphones on players violates NFL rules. Andrea Kremer of NBC reported that several teams might charge the Patriots this week with having stolen playbooks from the visitors’ dressing room. The convenient “malfunction” of visiting teams’ headphones at the Patriots’ two fields under Belichick seems to have happened far too often to be an IT department error. The rumor mill says Belichick, Richard Nixon-style, has file cabinets of info on opposing coaches and assistant coaches – some gleaned honestly, some obtained by cheating

The league also was reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday’s game, sources said. The team did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about possible irregularities in its communication setup during the game.

James Joyner | Tuesday, May 27, 2008

In addition to videotaping other teams in direct violation of League rules, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots also cheat on their use of the Injured Reserve list. Mike Florio has the details at Sporting News.

When Walsh met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, he blew the whistle on the Patriots using players on injured reserve during practice. Goodell chose his words carefully at the press conference following the May 13 meeting with Walsh, explaining only that Walsh said “there was a tape at one point in time of a player inappropriately practicing.” The question left unanswered is the extent to which the Patriots engaged in such conduct outside the presence of a camera lens, and after Walsh left the team in 2003.

Enter Ross Tucker. The former Patriots offensive lineman has joined the media, and he recently wrote that the Patriots were using injured players in practice as recently as 2005. Tucker also says that none of the other three teams he played for did the same thing.

Goodell has said that he’ll investigate Walsh’s claims, but that he won’t impose further penalty on the Patriots if Walsh’s claim is corroborated. But what if Tucker’s claim is corroborated, too? And what if an investigation reveals that the Patriots have been using injured players in practice for most of the Bill Belichick era? Can Goodell really do nothing further to the team at that point, especially since he made it clear last year that the Patriots had a chance to come clean, and that any future evidence of undisclosed cheating would result in harsh sanctions?

As one league source opined to ProFootballTalk.com last week, the use of injured players in practice is more significant than the videotaping of defensive coaching signals. As the source explained it, the tactic allows “injured” players to be stashed on the roster, preventing other teams from claiming them on waivers. It gives the “injured” players an opportunity to develop their skills. It gives the healthy players a break from practice reps.

Simply amazing. The NFL has let Belichick get away with claiming fake injuries and under-reporting serious injuries, violating the spirit of the League’s disclosure rules, for years. But this is far more serious than that. My guess is that they’ll get away with this one, too.

Must-must-must read post on Pro Football Talk about the story in today's Boston Herald blowing open the story (which had been swirling as a mere rumor) that the Pats secretly taped the Rams final walk-through before Super Bowl XXXVI, giving them just enough edge to allow them to slip past the heavily favored Rams to win the Pats' first title of the dynasty.

WASHINGTON (AP) — With the Super Bowl fast approaching, a senior Republican senator says he wants the NFL to explain why it destroyed evidence of the New England Patriots cheating scandal.
"I am very concerned about the underlying facts on the taping, the reasons for the judgment on the limited penalties and, most of all, on the inexplicable destruction of the tapes," said Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., in a Thursday letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Why is that funny? Detroit has first dibs on waivers, based on last seasons record? If so, do you know for a fact he would have fallen to the jets had Detroit not taken him?

Sounds pre-arranged to me
