with so many young guys, the pats d is still learning the belichick way. the stats are also misleading when you consider how many yards they gave up to the steelers while playing prevent and how many they gave up against the colts once they were up 31-14. last night was another chapter in their learning: learning how to finish. this defense is playing pretty well right now. they're getting turnovers, creating short fields and playing to the situation of a game. mccourty's on his way to being a big piece of that puzzle.

ha!
i figured the responses. i agree though. He is not there but he has the makings to evolve into one. that defense is one of the youngest and most inexperienced ones in the league. A lot of the yards and bad stats were accumulated in the first half of the season. I havent looked but if i looked at their stats from the 2nd half till now i would guess that they are in the top half of the league, if not in the top 10. |

The question is if McCourty is a shutdown corner. The answer is yes. He is a rookie playing our #1 CB position aften Bodden went down with an injury. After some initial growing pains, he has emerged as a true shutdown corner. The interception he had last night was a result of textbook coverage. He knows how to play football and knows his role and isnt afraid to hit. What did Revis shutdown last night? That's right, just his mouth.
Those of you dissing the Pats D, Defense isnt about stats, its about shutting down teams when it matters. Like last night. That was a dominant defensive performance against a good team. The Pats D is young and has steadily improved. It is built for the cold weather and every single one of our remaining games will be played in cold weather, and that includes the 3 home playoff games. |

Yea.. gotta separate the two hard for some. I remember last year a lot of people around dallas were throwing that word around jenkins.. ttb comes to mind. Now ask them how shutdown he is...
When you have rookies.. or guys that really come out of nowhere you really can't crown them until at least their second season, because then you will have coordinators putting more focus on these players... then you can see what they are made of. There are exceptions though.. like Dez Bryant or Suh(even though I think he is a bit overrated this year).. but those are few and very far between. Specially with "shutdown" corners. These guys are basically non existent in today's game of football... revis being and exception although you might be able to say that about Flowers with the type of season he is having.

McCourty will be and is very close to becoming a shutdown corner. He is only a rookie and played at Rutgers which is not exactly a conference(Big Least) that boasted exceptional wide receivers. However, with the help of great coaching and a few bumps in the road along the way, McCourty is developing into a shutdown corner. Call me a homer, but it is just what I have seen over the past several weeks.
