MNF Broncos @ Chargers: Side/Total/Write up
10/19 Denver Broncos @ San Diego Chargers (-3.5/44)
When the game is on the line, who are you going to want to give the ball to; Kyle Orton? or Phillip Rivers? Everyone seems to be forgetting that this San Diego team came back from a defecit to win this division last year. With pretty much an unchanged roster. Who did they unseat? THE BRONCOS. I am not a Rivers fan. I think he can be a brat when he's on the field. He throws like he's in high heels. But the man flat out can get the job done. He led a game-winning drive against Oakland on MNF in week one. He brought his team back from being down 4 scores, and threatened to catch the Steelers on SNF a few weeks back. He had 421 passing yards against a good Baltimore defense. Much is being made of the great defensive output by Denver so far this season. And it IS a much improved unit. But they are leaving the friendly environment of the Mile High city...where 3 of their 5 wins have come. Who have they beat? New England is probably their best win. They beat Cinci on a freak play. Their other 3 wins came against Oakland, Cleveland and Dallas...all of whom are troubled teams this year. As far as Denver's offense...does it really exist? They average less than 20ppg. Their offense is not built to play from behind. Kyle Orton has a good record as a starter, 24-12 I think (or close to it), but the advantage clearly goes to SD here. Also, SD has the corners (Jammer, Cromartie) to contain Brandon Marshall, who is the only clear, deep threat that Orton has. And probably, most importantly, SD is coming off a bye week. Resting, no travel, lots of film and getting healthy are what bye weeks are all about. Shawn Merriman is several weeks past the "Tila Tequila" incident and has had 2 weeks to let his groin heal. He will be ready to play. SD won't be able to completely stop Denver with their defense, but will put up more than enough points to get the win and cover San Diego Chargers -3.5 As for the total, OVER OVER OVER. This SD team put up 52 points against Denver last season in a win-or-go-home situation. Rivers can do it when it counts. And it really counts today, as SD would fall to 2-3 and would have a really hard time catching a Broncos team that would be 6-0. Broncos/Chargers over 44 GL everyone! |
