The two western divisions of the National and American conferences are not among the strongest in the NFL, yet both the Chargers and the 49ers are still in with chances of a divisional title and a trip to the post-season.
This is a must-win game for both teams and, after an 0-5 start the 49ers, finally managed to win with authority on Sunday when dispatching the Seahawks. It was a victory that put them one win away from the divisional lead. Many thought that San Francisco QB Alex Smith was history in the red and gold but he hit back with three touchdown passes and 255 yards. With premier running back Frank Gore gone for the season with a broken hip the 49ers were forced to take to the air - but they are 1-5 on the road and this season they are 0-6 against teams who have a winning record.
Facing the top-ranked defence in the NFL will likely be a much stiffer task for Smith. San Diego allow a league-low 265.0 yards per game while giving up the fewest through the air at 173.4. Their defence is also tied for third with Oakland at 38 sacks - so Smith can expect some pressure.
