Nobody Duz it Better! ....................WOW
The 10 Best Draft Picks: Steelers
Excluding any players taken in the first round, otherwise this turns into a list of the 10 Greatest Steelers, and frankly, that’s boring. I’m looking for value, specifically the best steals considering where they were taken in the draft and how their careers played out. 10. DE L.C. Greenwood, 10th round, 1969: Nicknamed “Hollywood Bags” (his bags were always packed and ready to leave for Hollywood at a moment’s notice), the colorful, gold-shoe wearing Greenwood was merely a six-time Pro Bowler, four-time champion, and member of the All-Time Steelers team and 1970s NFL Team of the Decade as a member of the vaunted Steel Curtain Front Four. Not bad for the 238th pick in the draft. 9. RB Rocky Bleier, 16th round, 1968: A Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and four Super Bowl rings; those are the accolades that the 417th pick in the 1968 NFL draft accumulated in a lifetime that was already made into a movie in 1980. Actually, Bleier was drafted twice in 1968: once by the Steelers and once by his country, when he served in Vietnam and was wounded by an enemy grenade. A great blocking back in his own right, Bleier also racked up more than 1,300 all-purpose yards in the 1976 season and played 11 years in all for the Steelers. 8. LB Greg Lloyd, 6th round, 1987: While Lloyd certainly had his problems (especially after football), no one can deny what he meant to Bill Cowher as the heart and soul of his defense for most of the 1990s. Lloyd was the UPI AFC Defensive Player of the Year in 1994, a five-time Pro Bowler, and a three-time All-Pro – not exactly common for guys who played collegiately at Fort Valley State. 7. WR John Stallworth, 4th round, 1974: Like Lloyd, Stallworth was another small-school find by the Steeler scouts, plucking the future Hall of Famer from Alabama A&M. Stallworth teamed with fellow HOFer Lynn Swann to form one of the most explosive pass-catching duos in league history, and left the game with four rings and four trips to the Pro Bowl. It’s also worth noting that Stallworth became a part-owner of the Steelers in March, 2009. 6. LB Andy Russell, 16th round, 1963: It’s hard to believe that 219 players were chosen before this seven-time Pro Bowl selection in 1963; it’s harder to believe that seven Pro Bowls does not automatically punch a ticket to Canton. And remember this – during 1964 to 1965, Russell was deployed to Germany to serve in the Army as a Lieutenant – meaning he sacrificed two years in the prime of his career for our country. 5. LB Jack Ham, 2nd round, 1971: The pride of Johnstown (and Penn State), Ham wasn’t totally overlooked in the draft, but considering his gaudy career achievements, it’s safe to say that he was a steal. Eight Pro Bowls, six First-Team All-Pros, two Second-Team All-Pros, four rings, and a spot on the NFL’s 75th Anniversary Team should probably go higher than 34th overall. 4. LB Jack Lambert, 2nd round, 1974: Too small to play linebacker in the NFL? I’d say things worked out well for Lambert and the Steelers, who got the last laugh in landing this iconic, toothless face of the Steel Curtain in the 1970s that remains beloved to this day. Nine Pro Bowls, seven First-Team All-Pros and one second-team, four rings, and spots on the 75th Anniversary Team and both the 1970s and 1980s Team of the Decades. Not a bad deal at #46 overall, if I do say so myself. 3. DB Mel Blount, 3rd round, 1970: When one of the greatest defensive backs of all time is sitting there and you have the #50 pick in the draft, you jump on him – and that’s exactly what the Steelers did in 1970 when they snagged another superstar from a small school, in this case Southern University. Like many of the other players on this list, he has similar accolades, including multiple Pro Bowls, All-Pros, Championship rings, and various all-time teams. After his football career, he’s continued to give back to the community with his Mel Blount Youth Home in nearby Claysville, PA. 2. Mike Webster, 5th round, 1974: Quite possibly the greatest center of all time, The 125th player taken, Webster capped a 1974 Steeler draft class that included names like Swann, Lambert, and Stallworth – a pretty good year for the scouting department. Nine Pro Bowls and All-Pro Teams, Two All-Decade Teams, the 75th Anniversary Team, and four rings capped an incredible career that unfortunately ended with the Kansas City Chiefs. Webster’s post-football life was extremely sad, suffering from from amnesia, dementia, depression, and acute bone and muscle pain and living out of his pickup truck or train stations between Wisconsin and Pittsburgh. He died in 2002 at the age of 50. 1. Hines Ward, 3rd round, 1998: To many, Hines Ward is the ultimate Steeler; despite his physical style of play, he’s missed just 10 starts since taking over as a full-time starter in 1999. He holds every significant receiving record in team history, won the Super Bowl XL MVP award, and has been the team’s MVP or co-MVP three times. And the most astonishing stat of all: this incredible pro career came after drafting Ward 92nd overall as a converted quarterback in 1998. ![]() Honorable mention Mike Wallace (2009/3rd Round), LaMarr Woodley (2007/2) Larry Foote (2002/4), Brett Keisel (2002/4), Kendrell Bell (2001/2), Clark Haggans (2000/5), Joey Porter (1999/3), Aaron Smith (1999/4), Deshea Townsend (1998/4), Mike Vrabel (1997/3), Orpheus Roye (1996/3), Kordell Stewart (1995/2), Jason Gildon (1994/3), Chad Brown (1993/2), Levon Kirkland (1992/2), Darren Perry (1992/8), Neil O’Donnell (1990/3), Barry Foster (1990/5), Carnell Lake (1989/2), Carlton Haselrig (1989/12), Dermontti Dawson (1988/2), Hardy Nickerson (1987/5), David Litte (1981/7), Tunch Ilkin (1980/6), Dwayne Woodruff (1979/6), Dwight White (1971/4), Ernie Holmes (1971/8), Dick Hoak (1961/7), Ernie Stautner (1950/2) mondesis
