NFL to Expand to 18 Games?

Aparently so, but not until the 2011 season. Players are paid for 20 games, whether they count or not. The obious reason for this move is bigger T.V. contracts. The problem is that they will add the two games at the end of the season, bad news for warm weather teams. Can you see the joy on the faces of Charger fans when they look at the schedule and see that they get to go to Denver and Kansas City in January? What about the Dolphins, who could have it much worse. They could go to all 3 division rivals in a 6 or 7 week period in December and January. Then there are the non-divisional games to be considered.

This also pushes the Superbowl back to President Day weekend in February. Is this too late? Are they starting to drag the season out too long?

September 1st - June 30th Super Bowl

I don't mind giving them July and August off to commit their crimes instead of all the time they get to end up in jail with the offseason they get now. See we may do them a favour, more football less arrests

18 why not just get rid of preseason all together and have a 20 game season. College football gets no preseason lets just get on with it.

It's meaningless because they will shorten the preseason by the same measure they will lengthen the regular season. I prefer the way the season is set-up now, don't change it.

NFL preseason games offer greater betting opportunities. I wouldn't want to trade a week of the preseason, for another week of regular season.

You are right there are betting opportunitites from preseason and I enjoy betting on preseason but still at the end of the day I would much prefer to see more regular season games.

Preseason is like mini torture for the players & fans. Who really likes it anyway? Maybe coaches but they don't want to see guys get hurt.

2 preseason games would be perfect. JMO

This is more or less a done deal guys. The big question is tacking the two extra games on the back end, giving the cold weather teams a major advantage. The NFL insists on tacking the games on the back end because more people watch T.V. in general in January than they do in August. The NFL does not want the season starting before Labor Day. Since this will not effect the players salary in any way, this is nothing but a money grab for the owners.

Everyone talks about more games being better, but the quality level will likely drop off the more games one plays, because at the end of the day these are actual people on the field and not machines. The longer they play, the less likely they will be at peak condition, so what you see on the field will suffer in terms of quality the more the season goes on. And 16 games is enough, if you can't make the playoffs in 16 games, too bad, that's more than fair enough a shot.

And what's in it for the players? Two (or even one) extra games a year will shorten careers, more wear and tear, and if they aren't getting paid proportionally more, then they are fools for going along with it.

If anything, cut the schedule back by a couple of games, but of course that will never happen, because the blind pursuit of will trump all other issues, more noble or not.
