NFL Union head Gene Upshaw has died

NEW YORK -- The NFL Players Association says executive director Gene Upshaw has died. The Hall of Fame guard was 63.
As union head, Upshaw helped NFL players obtain free agency and the riches that came with it.
His outstanding 15-season playing career was entirely with the Oakland Raiders and included two Super Bowl wins and seven Pro Bowl appearances.
In 1983, he became executive director of the players' association and guided it through the 1987 strike that led to replacement football. By 1989, the players had a limited form of freedom, called Plan B, and in 1993, free agency and a salary cap were instituted.
Since then, the players have prospered so much that NFL owners recently opted out of the latest labor contract, which was negotiated two years ago by Upshaw and then-commissioner Paul Tagliabue

63 is a bit young to be leaving this world. Any news as to the cause of death? The Players are in for a tough time now, having a new commissioner deal with owners who are tired of paying rediculous salaries to arrestee's and injured players.

RIP, man did a wonderful job taking care of the players union. I had no idea he was sick. Although NFL players don't live long lives. The NFL lost another good man.

that is sad. RIP.

as far as the union goes, Upshaw didnt take care of his pentioners or get more garuanteed contracts, something i have a problem with know how much these owners can make of the players. I am interested in what happens from here on out bussiness wise in the NFL players union.
