Nnamdi Asomugha contract voided

Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha's contract voided and he will be allowed to become a free agent without the Oakland Raiders being able to use their franchise tag on him, according to an NFL Players Association document.

AFC West blog

Williamson ESPN.com's Bill Williamson writes about all things AFC West in his division blog.

• Blog network: NFL Nation

Asomugha’s deal included a little-known clause that said his contract would void if he didn’t achieve his not-likely-to-be-earned incentives in 2010 -- and he didn'’t.

His contract also contained a stipulation that if he didn’t achieve his incentives, the Raiders would agree not to designate him their franchise or transition player.

To achieve his incentives, Asomugha had to play in a greater number of defensive plays in 2010 than he did in 2009, and this season Asomugha played in only 14 games whereas he played in all 16 in 2009.

He also could have achieved his incentives by improving upon on his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season -- but he didn't have any interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season.

He will be the top defensive player available whenever free agency begins.

The bigger story is how does a defensive player make the Pro Bowl without any INT's, Fumble Recoveries, Sacks and only 19 tackles?

Because he's so good opposing QB's rarely throw his way

this just makes for a better offseason. even though its still playoffs. if asoumougha goes to any contender or close to contender, its totally upgrades the team more than anyone else on the free agent market outside of peyton manning, but not sure if there is a chance manning leaves.

Dolphins go after him? Try to keep up with Jets?
Maybe the Bills?

Bills have been looking at that cb out of LSU. This would make a lot more sense.

I would take this guy over Revis....Revis is good but there are a handful of guys that I like over him. Asomugha is going to get paid now.....the voided contract may be the best thing for him. He'll be able to join a possible playoff contender now. The Raiders continue to amaze me. Why get rid of Cable after a decent season with a team that contended more times that not?
