Is Norv Turner a good coach?

Thought of this after the tomlin poll. What makes him different from a coach like norv turner? He inherited a great team and made the playoffs twice but actually has had more postseason success, with a team devastated by injuries. 3-2 in the playoffs with an afc title game appearance in two seasons and has groomed the qb into an elite qb.

serious question, why the difference in opinions from everyone? cuz he coached a few crap teams in oakland and washington? He is the person responsible for the offensive part of the team and they were the #2 scoring offense in the nfl...the defense was ranked near the bottom. However, I think he has shown in the playoffs he can win big time, close games

Norv Turner is one of the best offensive minds in the game. His years in Dallas with the big three made him but even in Miami with Jay Fielder, he was able to call a good game

I think he probably gets a bad rap as being a crappy coach, some are just better suited as a coordinator

He gets a bad rap for his previous record and i'm not sure if its him or the team that comes out of the gates slow with all these preseason sb predictions, but he really showed some guts standing up to AJ and telling him to fire his buddy Cottrell. To keep the team together at 4-8 and make the run they did was a pretty good job imo

He deserves credit for that. A lot of teams would have packed it in

Packing it in is so overrated its not funny. Not sure why so many people focus on this year in and year out. Plus as for San Diego I have a hard time believing they would quit on any coach given a lot of their leaders personalities. LT is a class act, and Rivers is young/fiery or whatever you wanna call him dude would never not come to play to afraid of looking bad imo

All teams come to the game to play, however there is many occassions when a team is out of it and they get behind they basically pack it in. The intensity is just not the same towards end of game

yea

I thought you were talking about packing it in for a season/multiple games seeing as it looked like they had no shot to make playoffs.

i'm telling you cuse, this team was very close to breaking...there was a player on a tv station basically saying they didnt like him and he stood up in front of the locker room and ripped him for it. I think the players like him, he's a little more emotional than people give him credit for.

Wanted to get people's opinions because people are so quick in sd to want to run him out of town, yet he has more playoff wins than the last 5 charger coaches combined in 2 years

I don't believe he should be run out of town. Takes a lot for me to think that specially with new coaches. I always give coaches benefit of doubt till they prove they don't deserve it.. like when I had to rip billick everyday of last season. Lucky for the ravens the owner reads CM and took my advice finally.

I think he would make a better assistant coach then head coach. I believe he has some of the best talent in the NFL but he falls short of moving them in the right direction. He seems to lack the fire this team may need to push them over the edge.

I voted average. He certainly is a very good offensive mind, but his defensive abilities certainly lack. There is no way I run him out of San Diego. Knowing their front office, they would only get someone worse. San Diego's defense is really terrible. They also need a #1 WR, because L.T. is basically finished as a super star, and Rivers will have to take the offense over. I think Turner can rebuild the offense around Rivers, but what about that terrible defense? That will be a major challenge. Another thing that the Chargers have to rid themselves of is this losers mentality. It is deeply embedded in this team. There is no excuse for 9-9 this season. They are a much better team than that.

I don't know what to think of Norv, i know this team should have never been 8-8, and to be honest they were lucky to turn this around, and I do not think it was because of Norv. They were 4-8 and down by DD to KC with less than 2 minutes left. Teams lose those games 99% of the time, they got lucky that KC has collapsed a number of times this year, they then beat a crappy Oakland team, a TB team on a tail slide, and an overrated Denver team at home. The only quality win IMO was the Indy playoff game. I am huge Charger fan, but I just don't know what to make of him!

P.S. Ron Rivera is completely overrated!!! This defense did not get any better with him as coordinator. i could have sworn that was Cotrrell calling the Pitt game as Rivera only rushed 4 the entire game giving Pitt all day to throw. I laughed when the media kept saying how much better the D was with Rivera!

Turner's got a lot of the same things going for him that Shanahan did in Denver. Great offensive mind, and plenty of management and players backing his decisions. He has the bad rep because he hasn't won a ring yet. Whether that's his fault or poor play on the players parts, it falls on him regardless.

But considering how long Shanny lasted in Denver, I don't think you should have to worry about Norv going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Chargers in the SB within the next 3 years, as long as they shore up that defense.

I kinda wanna throw up saying that, but it's the truth. Too much talent on that team with a smart enough coach to not get there anyways.

Rivera replaced the fired Ted Cottrell at midseason. When Rivera took over, the Chargers ranked 23rd in the league in points allowed (24.9 per game) and 27th in scrimmage yards allowed (381.8 per game). In his eight regular-season games as coordinator, they improved to ninth (18.5) and 13th (334.6), respectively.
