Observations and updates from steeler camp...

For all displaced Steeler fans.... Brutal day weather wise Thursday at Saint Vincent College.. Hot & humid with rain .. The perfect day for camp viewing.. Flozell the "hotel" is a HUGE man when seen in person.. Made Pouncey look like a RB when standing beside him.. The difference between a Cowher camp and Tomlin camp is night and day.. No horseplay and joking around in Tomlin's camp on the field like the old Cowher days ... All biz.. Pitt punter spotted taking some kickoff trys.. Have to say he hit some large kicks may be something new for the Steelers this year as Reed sucks on kickoffs.. Camp darlings ... Ziggy Hood is the camp star so far for sure.. Others with reported above average camps rookie WR Sanders (3rd round)... WR Brown (6th round).. OL Pouncey (1st round))... Vets Keon Lewis (CB).. Timmions (LB)... Gay (CB) which is good news after his brutal year last year.. Camp flop and loser so far just like Hood its a no brainer.. LB Jason Worlids (3rd round ) china doll... Neither QB Dixon or Lefty is blowing anyone away but one QB is .. Big Ben slimmed down and nose to the grindestone.. On that note stayed well after practice and when it was over there were two players left on the field signing autos and shaking hands and it was Ben (a first in my years of watching camp) and Heath Miller.. All in all an enjoyable day.. Pitt fans have reason to be excited about this year IMO a nice crop of impact rooks and mixture of young improving players ie.. Timmions & Mendenhall.. We shall see...

Cannot get him on the field always nicked.. China doll.. The "glass man" Can add RB Dwyer to the early flop list.. Came into camp overweight.. Coaches did not take well to this considering they were giving him a quote "second chance" But Redman is having a great camp and will stick this year as the short yardage back IMO after last years short yardage debacle.. Have always maintained the Steelers dont have to run the ball more just BETTER..

Steelers may just have found a diamond in the rough with Antonio Brown.. Sweet catch on a 3rd down on a throw that was an inch off the ground.. Made it look easy.. plus showed his speed on TD catch.. IMO Dixon may just be the Steelers opening day QB.. Lefty a tad slow playing behind Pitt's line.. It may be time to make a move I think it is .. Also nice game by Keon Lewis (CB).. Pitt has some nice young talent brewing..Redman (rb) made the team last night also IMO..should have made a roster spot last year ..

» Coming to Latrobe is different than any other camp. Seeing Ward with a piece of tape on the front of his helmet with his name on it -- which is what high school kids do until the coach knows their name -- is always impressive to me.

Watching the Steelers pull up to Latrobe High School in yellow school buses with an old steel mill as the backdrop and 15,000 fans jammed into the little stadium is very special. The players take it seriously.

Jason Worlids, will play tonight and is in line for the back-up outside LB job.............

Camp closed Friday... Would not be shocked to see both "Hotel" & Hartwig let go.. If neither cracks the starting lineup (Pouncey just may take Hartwigs job) they carry to hefty of a price for backups.. keon Lewis (CB) is a budding NFL star corner in the coaches mind.. All in all a very healthy camp.. Special teams got alot of attention.. as well they should have.. Pitt just may shock some people this year.. Some nice young players in the fold.. Stefon logan also may be a surprise cut especially if Brown has a good return game tonight.. Talented returner is Logan but its a number game.. he wont be unemployed long IMO

keon Lewis (CB) was a thrid round pick last year, got put on IR after the 4th year. He's lookin very good and may even slip past Mcfadden by the end of the year, and def pushing willie gay. He looks really solid and will have my eye out on him tonight...Look for LT to have a MVP type year..

Gay will go back to the inside on the nickel where he shined before last years debacle (really hurt Pitt last year on the outside) Lewis has to get on the field somewhere for sure.. Agree with LT .. IMO in the end will be a bigger force then Woodley .. He can fly.. If the O-line jells with Pouncey and one of the young guys at right tackle (dont like Hotel) Pitt will be just fine this year..

Here's hoping that Dixon will be the starting QB, I was impressed by his MNF performance last year.

Pouncey is so dominant at the position that it’s not even close. He looks like a Pro Bowler after two preseason games. Not only does he block his man, he often blocks TWO men, getting one and then running downfield to obliterate someone else. The man consumes defenders. The only question left is what to do with Justin Hartwig, release him or try to make use of him.(Ed Bouchette)

Any team looking for an underacheving RB J. Dwyer will soon be looking for a job.. Put a fork in him... maybe Randelle El also.. followed by Hotel & Hartwig.. house cleaning year.. gut call...

Dixon to get time with first team this week vs Denver.. Lefty is one bad half from getting pulled IMO.. Dixon deserves a shot.. Have to think Pouncey getting the starting nod may be hurting Dixon as Pitt might not like the thought of starting a rook at center and QB.. Local Conspiracy theories have the Steelers trying to hang onto Dixon as a backup to Ben but scared if he shines in limited duty that after this year when his contract expires they will not be able to sign him.. Also if he shines and Ben comes back well.. That could be fun.. Ben starts when he returns no question but has a few bad games when he comes back and let the party begin..Fans looking for any excuse.. I am sure Ben would handle that well.. Looks like Lewis (cb) may just get the nod at corner over Brian Mac.. Former 49er Will Allen impressing also as a backup to Troy and special teams..IMO special teams will be a huge upgrade from the past years .. Cost them the playoffs last year.. may get them in this year..
