Paolantonio rips Favre

Some of the quotes

Yes, Favre played long enough to throw the most touchdown passes and collect the most wins by an NFL quarterback. But let's examine the second half of No. 4's career. The truth is, Favre did little over the past decade to earn the gushing praise heaped upon him by our fawning brethren in the media.

Yes, Favre won a Super Bowl -- 11 years ago! But as his career arc spiraled downward, the blind adulation only got worse.

Favre's passer rating in his last 12 postseason games was a pedestrian 77.8. In his last five wild-card games, he went 2-3 with more interceptions (nine) than touchdown passes (seven). In his last three divisional playoff games, he went 1-2 with seven TDs and seven interceptions. That's a 3-5 record with 14 touchdown passes and 16 picks.

Favre isn't even the greatest quarterback in the history of the Packers. It's not even close. Bart Starr won five NFL championships -- four more than Favre -- and retired as the NFL's most accurate passer.

Agree to a point but it is about timing. This should be said before he retired and few years from now when he is coming up HOF votes...why do it now during a celebration period for a man that probably had more guts and determination then skill....after all there is a reason he never became a starter at ATL and his best scholly offer was to S. Miss

c - I believe this is from Sal's book, which was put out way before he retired. "The Most Overrated and Underrated Players, Teams, Coaches and Moments in NFL History" by Sal Paolantonio

The book was meant to sell books and you can't sell books by saying Favre is the best or that Bob Griese was great - or whatever crap was in this book.

I don't understand anyone ripping Favre, why because he threw a lot of interceptions?

Agree to a point

But he was on a piss poor team for a minute, and the only way he could win was to take risks and risks lead to int. But with that said, the option to manage the game was there, and for a few seasons it was usualy an int or 2 that put him in the position where he had to force it b/c they were behind.

Give him something to work with and he can make it happen, proved it again last year

Ironman of the nfl, insane props for that

I hate the whole argument of who was a great quarterback. Some have leadership, some just get it done. To me, it's very hard to quantify many of those intangibles... I think Favre is a bit over-rated - how much, I can't put into numbers and puting it into words would just cloud my judgement...

QB's take too much credit and get too much of the blame. Don't get me wrong, they are the probably the single most important position on the field, but football is probably the sport that you have to depend on your teammates the most. Saying some guys are good isn't too tough, but ranking them (even the top 20) is pretty tough IMO. Different strenghts and weaknesses add up differently when talking about the whole... Let's not even get into the fact if a QB had a great defense or offensive scheme.
