Patriots release Ventrone (again)

The Patriots on Tuesday released safety Ross Ventrone, one day after he was promoted to the 53-man roster.

Ventrone played 18 defensive snaps in Monday night's win over the Chiefs, first replacing safety James Ihedigbo when he left the game with a shoulder injury, and later replacing safety Sterling Moore late in the fourth quarter.

This is the 17th transaction involving Ventrone this season, and that number will likely rise if Ventrone clears waivers and returns to the practice squad later this week.

The Patriots now have an open spot on their 53-man roster. With starting tackle Matt Light injured late in Monday night's contest, it is possible the team will look to fill that opening with an offensive lineman. Guard Donald Thomas was released to make room for Ventrone on Monday and is one possibility to fill that spot after clearing waivers on Tuesday.

Offensive tackle Thomas Welch, who had two stints on the 53-man roster when the tackle position was thinned after an injury to Sebastian Vollmer, was signed by the Rams off the Bills' practice squad on Tuesday, eliminating the chances of his return to New England.
