Paxico Burress calls for Giants 23-17, roflmao

Plaxico's prediction doesn't upset Giant teammates
BY ARTHUR STAPLE

January 30, 2008

GLENDALE, Ariz.

No other Giants tried to emulate Plaxico Burress by predicting a score for Sunday's Super Bowl.

But no one criticized him for saying Monday that the Giants will beat the Patriots, 23-17. For a team that's been counted out before each of its last two playoff wins, no one thinks victory is out of reach against the perfect Pats.

"Are we supposed to say we're going to lose? What do you want us to say?" Antonio Pierce said yesterday at Super Bowl Media Day. "We want to win the game. We're not here to be second-best to anybody. We came here to win a game. If you want to consider that a guarantee, it's not. We're not going to think negative and say we're going to lose and have the same perception everybody else has about us."

The Giants' unified stance this season has been hard won, thanks to the universal doubts about the team. Of course, Tom Coughlin kicked off training camp with T-shirts that read "Talk Is Cheap! Play The Game." So the coach might not be happy with Burress' called shot.

But many of the football-related questions revolved around the Patriots' 18-0 record and whether the Giants belong on the same field at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

The Giants, to a man, feel justified not only in relishing their underdog role - Burress scoffed at the 12-point spread, saying, "Why not make it 21 or 28?" - but also in reminding questioners that a team that wins three playoff games on the road isn't too shabby, either.

"When you're listening to commentators and everybody picks you to lose every time, but you keep winning, after a while you develop that [us against the world] attitude," Osi Umenyiora said. "All those words mean nothing. People are acting like it would take a lightning strike for us to win. I think we have a good chance."

"We damn sure didn't fly all this way from New York to just hand them a football game," Brandon Jacobs said. "People are acting like we're supposed to just come out here and hand them the game."

The Patriots didn't seem terribly affected by Burress' prediction. "What are predictions? Just words, right?" Rodney Harrison said. Richard Seymour said: "Talk is cheap. You need to put some actions behind that."

Burress did that in Green Bay, and the rest of the Giants have done that repeatedly in the playoffs, when they were the ones posting comments from opponents all over their locker room.

Burress made sure to paste a copy of cornerback Ronde Barber's mild jabs at him before the Giants beat the Bucs in the wild-card round. Barber said speed wasn't Burress' forte, and that Patriots receiver Randy Moss was more talented.

"I look up to Randy and they're a great offense," Burress said yesterday, "but we don't have to take a backseat to those guys. Where are we at right now? We earned it. We didn't just get lucky and end up here."

Jacobs is another Giant who gets fired up easily, and he got an alley-oop of a question that he slammed home. A reporter said a Boston newspaper was pre-selling a book online about the presumably 19-0 Patriots.

"If people buy that book before this game," Jacobs said, "they're going to be [--] off."

got no problem w him saying that - even though it's saying they are going to win - still a lot smarter than a "guarantee"

There is nothing wrong with it!! Off course all the Giants think they will win and should say they think they'll win. The media tries to make something out of nothing every week!!

I would have probably given the Pats more than 17 points!
