Playbook Preseason Best Bets

5* BEST BET Saturday August 28
SEATLE over Minnesota by 11
Another ‘Dress Rehearsal’ duo threat takes place in the City of Lakes
as the Seahawks and Pete Carroll join forces to take on a Vikings
squad that’s just 1-3 ATS at home off back-to-back road trips. Seattle
has been anything but sleepless in Game Three of the pre-season
posting an eye-opening 21-5 SU and 20-6 ATS mark, including 8-4 SU
and 11-1 ATS away while Carroll is 3-1 SUATS in Week Three during
his previous NFL tenure. Our powerful PLAYBOOK.com database
dresses up this one further as it chimes in with this little beauty:
since 1985, home teams in Game Three that won exactly three
pre-season games the previous season are 0-6 ATS when hosting a
foe that won four or more pre-season games the previous season.
We’ll supply the fi nishing touches as we note the last six pre-season
matchups between these two have produced an average of 48.5
PPG, resulting in all ‘Overs’ – just the way Pete wants it.
Seattle over

4 *BEST BET Saturday August 21
HOUSTON over New Orleans by 10
Along with Gary Kubiak’s terrifi c pre-season numbers (see Game One
writeup), we have a couple of other factors in our favor as we ride
the Texans for a second straight week. For starters, Houston will be
looking to avenge a 38-14 whippin’ they suffered in last year’s preseason
home opener when the Saints came marching in – their worst
pre-season defeat ever under Kubiak. More importantly, however,
Drew Brees and company will be tangling with our INCREDIBLE STAT
on page 3 as it points out the diffi culties defending Super Bowl
champs face in Game Two of the exhibition season. With the Saints
just 2-10 SU and 1-11 ATS in pre-season home openers since 1998
and 5-13 SU and 4-14 ATS in their last 18 as exhibition chalk, we’ll
look for the Texans to return the favor in this Superdome lid lifter.

3* BEST BET Friday August 13
Jacksonville over PHILADELPHIA by 7
Jack’s Jags are the fi rst of six ‘Double Entendres’ (teams playing with
double revenge from last season – one loss in exhibition and the
other during the regular season) and should be highly motivated
to kicks things off in 2010 after suffering back-to-back losing
campaigns for the fi rst time in the Del Rio era. The Cats have been
on the prowl against NFC foes of late, posting a tidy 9-1-1 ATS mark
in their last eleven and their eight-year head coach is a nifty 9-1-1
ATS as a dog in pre-season play. They’ll be tackling an Eagles’ squad
that doesn’t put much credence in pre-season openers as evidenced
by their current 0-6 SUATS run. They’ll also be facing a Philly bunch
that is undergoing more than a nip/tuck after the departures of
Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook. Fall harvest may be right
around the corner but the corn on this ‘Kolb’ is not quite ripe for
the taking – or the giving in this matter. Grab the bushel of points.
