Post The Pros

Cleveland at Pittsburgh

The Steelers are back at full strength with the return of two stars, and the Browns likely want to commit mass suicide.Cleveland won at Buffalo last week, 6-3, in what had to be the poorest excuse for a professional football game this season. Both the Bills and Browns are horrible, will continue to be horrible and will end the season horribly. The horror story that is Cleveland's 2009 season continues this week as the Steelers should come close to or exceed their season-high for scoring (38 points). They may even get a defensive score or two, especially with Troy Polamalu back after missing 4 games. For those of you who like numbers, i'll lock this one down with some shiny trends…
The Browns have covered one of their last five against the AFC North, while the Steelers have covered five of six. The Browns are 1-5 against the spread in their last six road games and their last six as a road dog, while the Steelers are 6-1 in their last seven at home and as home favorites. The favorite is 7-2-1 against the spread in their last ten meetings overall, the Browns are 1-4 against the spread in their last five in Pittsburgh, and Cleveland is 2-8-1 against the spread in their last eleven meetings overall.

Seriously, what else do you need? This is not going to be pretty.

Pittsburgh-14 (PLAY OF THE DAY)

Chicago at Atlanta (Sunday Night under the Lights)

The Bears are coming off their bye week and will be getting back some important defensive players and they will need them. Last week Atlanta played a very good game dominating a very good defense. The Sunday night game could be one of the better contests of the day. Last year, the Falcons surprised the Bears with a late-game comeback.

Last week, the Falcons were the road team who returned from a week off to shock a one-loss team at home. This week, it could be the Bears who do the same thing.

But the Falcons showed too much firepower last week against the 49ers, and it makes it very hard to go against them at home in a rare opportunity to let the nation know that last year’s hot new team is moving quickly toward becoming a year-in, year-out contender.Gunslingers Jay Cutler and Matt Ryan will engage in something resembling arena football here. Both are blessed with exceptional arms, good receivers and solid running backs. Both teams are 3-1, but after the Falcons dismantled the 49ers last week, one has to believe that Atlanta has the edge and, being home, should get the win.

Atlanta-3

Philadelphia at Oakland (Let's lay the lumber)

Will the Raiders get splattered again? In their last 3 games, Oakland has scored 16 points, while giving up 96 and the losing margins are growing. with Darren McFadden out (and generally unproductive when he was healthy), the Raiders must rely on JaMarcus Russell for offense, which is a real problem. Russell is probably the worst starting Qb in the business, with a 42% completion percentage, 1 TD and 4 picks. We're either going to see Bruce Gradkowski behind center soon or the quick departure of Tom Cable from the head coaching ranks. There's no way anyone can possibly believe the Raiders could upset the Eagles. They may not even score.

tease play #1

Tennessee at New England

The Patriots pass attack is starting to come around, and figures to get a lot better quickly against what is surprisingly one of the poorest pass defenses in the league. Look for Randy Moss to get a wake up call here - he should have a very big day against this toothless defense.
It's been amazing to witness the Titans' slide from the AFC's elite to utter mediocrity. Their defense is allowing more points per game than only the Bucs, Rams and Lions, while the offense isn't doing much better, ranked #25, at 16.8 ppg. They are not doing anything particularly well, and are very short of receivers. They are also very banged up on defense, which spells disaster against the Patriots. Kerry Collins hasn't played badly, but he just doesn't have a great supporting cast. There's little chance that Vince Young will get in this game, and even he couldn't help much.

At 3-2, this is a must win for New England, and, after last week's loss at Denver, you can be assured that they'll be at their best. The schedule has not been kind to the Titans. They seem to get teams just when they're playing their best ball, like this week.

tease play #2

NY Giants at New Orleans

et's keep this simple. The Giants are a better football team - maybe the best in the league - than the Saints because they have such an impressive defense. It all starts with pressure on Drew Brees from the Giants' front four and linebackers and ends with Eli Manning throwing three TD passes and Brandon Jacobs dispelling the myth that the Saints are good against the run.

Besides, who have the Saints beaten? 1-4 Detroit, Philadelphia without Donovan McNabb (or Michael Vick), 1-4 Buffalo, and the now 3-2 Jets. Last we looked, the Giants were slaughtering the Raiders, 44-7 and manning didn't even play the whole first half. Say what you like about Drew Brees, but if Eli Manning isn't the best QB in the NFL, he's a close second to his older brother. The Saints are one of the best teams in the NFL and playing well on defense. New York is better defensively and just as potent on offense in close games the best offensive and defensive lines control.
