Cool Redskins/Giants : Trends And Notes : ...

Defending Super Bowl Champs play first meaningful game since upset of Patriots last February...

First-year head coach Jim Zorn makes his formal sideline debut with the Redskins...

Washington defensive end Jason Taylor, dealt from the Dolphins early in training camp, considered questionable due to a knee injury...

Taylor has not missed a start since the 1999 season...Giants are without five of 11 defensive players who started in Super Bowl XLII, including defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who will miss the season with a knee injury...

Jason Campbell makes formal return to the field after injuring his knee in Week 14 of last season...New York expected to be without kicker Lawrence Tynes (knee), and veteran John Carney will handle kicking chores for the team...Redskins and Giants split a home-and-home last season, with the road team winning both matchups...G-Men are 1-3 in openers under head coach Tom Coughlin...Redskins are 5-1 in openers since 2002.

*** Each of the last eight Super Bowl champions has won its regular season opener the following season.

Injuries: Redskins: OUT: DE Phillip Daniels (IR), DE Alex Buzbee (IR). QUESTIONABLE: DE Jason Taylor. Giants: OUT: QB Anthony Wright (IR), WR David Tyree, DE Osi Umenyiora (IR), ILB Jonathan Goff (IR), S Craig Dahl (IR), K Lawrence Tynes.
Strahan is gone and Umenyiora is out for the year, but I'm confident in Steve Spagnuolo's ability to have his front generate a pass rush. Tuck is still a beast; Mathias Kiwanuka is talented; and Jerome McDougle was a nice addition to the squad after National Cut Day.

Stopping the run could be an issue for the Redskins.

The Giants should be able to win by at least two touchdowns. The only thing concerning is how low this point spread is.
3.5? I would have made this line about seven, which probably would have drawn equal action from bettors.

Was has N.O., Ari, Dal, Phil next 4 games ...
Perhaps they'll be pumped up knowing their future schedule , but backing the Redskins with new coach ,
new offensive system , seems fishy.

Serious football bettors will want to watch how Redskins T Stephen Heyer handles DE Justin Tuck. Heyer is descent player who gives good effort. Tuck has high motor and quickness off the ball. Whoever wins this battle will help team immeasurably.

Another battle is Plaxico Burress vs. Shawn Springs. When Plax plays like he did in the postseason, he is unstoppable in all the various pass routes. Springs is intelligent defender, and will try to jam Burress to throw off timing routes of which Manning is extremely comfortable throwing.

Lastly, will Manning be able to have TE Kevin Boss as reliable bailout? Boss looked uncertain in preseason. This could cause teams to double Burress if they don’t fear Boss or any other Giants tight ends.

Washington is 5-5 and 2-6-2 ATS in first game of the season and 6-10 ATS on the road the last two seasons.
New York is also .500 in first tilt, with exact same spread record at 5-5.

Washington arrives in New Jersey 13-5-1 ATS against NFC East opponents.
WASHINGTON is 45-27 ATS (+15.3 Units) as an underdog of 3.5 to 9.5 points since 1992.
WASHINGTON is 28-11 ATS (+15.9 Units) as a road underdog of 3.5 to 7 points since 1992.

The Giants are 10-6 and 9-7 ATS hosting Washington since 1992, with the visitor having covered three in a row.

NY Giants: 4-0 Over at home if the total is between 38.5 and 42 points
With all this talk about the Redskins’ possible performers, the Jints’ QB Eli Manning has faced this divisional foe a total of seven times in his career.

Manning has recorded six passing touchdowns with four interceptions in those seven, averaging 182 YPG through the air (1,276 passing yards total) with a below average 49-percent pass completion.

Remember it was back on Dec. 16, 2007 (Week 15 to be exact) that the ‘Skins continued New York’s home problems with a 22-10 victory.

That win, which witnessed Washington’s Clinton Portis racking up 126 yards with a score on the ground, broke a Giants’ three-game divisional winning streak over the Redskins (stretched from October of ’06 to September of ’07).

In the last 10 meetings, New York has gone 6-4 straight up and against the spread.
With a 2-6-2 ATS record in the last 10 Week 1 games, the Redskins have been abysmal to backers in this spot. And supporting the road woes, Washington has gone 5-8-2 ATS in its last 15 games played (road games).

The 55-year-old Zorn, who started 100 games as a member of the Seahawks from 1976 through 1983, inherits a Washington team that went 9-7 and made its second playoff appearance in three years last season
it's a big ask for Jim Zorn to take over at Washington without having been an offensive or defensive co-ordinator somewhere first

The 1998 Denver Broncos, who followed up their Super Bowl XXXIII win over the Falcons with a 38-21 Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins in 1999, are the last defending champion to open their slate on a losing note.

Sidenote for Patriot Game ...

The Giants have a 85-61-4 advantage in the all-time regular season series with Washington, including an unconventional split of last year's home-and-home. New York took a 24-17 come-from-behind win at FedEx Field in Week 3, and was dealt a 22-10 setback when the clubs met at Giants Stadium in Week 15.

The last home win for the G-Men in the series came in 2006, when they won both ends of the season series.

The teams have also split two postseason matchups, with the Giants' 17-0 victory in the 1986 NFC Championship countering a 28-0 Washington win in a 1943 NFC Division Playoff.

For Campbell (2700 passing yards, 12 TD, 11 INT in 2007), it will be his seventh offensive system in eight seasons, dating back to his time as a collegian at Auburn. Top wideouts Santana Moss (61 receptions, 3 TD) and Antwaan Randle El (51 receptions, 1 TD) both return, as does tight end Chris Cooley (66 receptions, 8 TD), though Randle El has been nursing a hand injury of late.

The former Indiana star is expected to play against the Giants. In the backfield, Clinton Portis (1,262 rushing yards, 11 TD, 47 receptions) will continue to carry the load, with Ladell Betts (335 rushing yards, 21 receptions, 2 TD) occasionally sprinkled in as well.

Portis has gone over 1,200 yards in three of his four years with Washington

Best wishes this season
