River on Pace to Break Marino's record

SAN DIEGO (AP) - To Philip Rivers, it's just a number.

A big number, at that.

Halfway through what's been a stinker of a season for his San Diego Chargers, Rivers has passed for 2,649 yards. That's more than any other NFL quarterback has thrown for in the first eight games and has Rivers on pace to shatter Dan Marino's single-season record of 5,084 yards in 1984.

Rivers is interested in the record only if it means more victories for the Chargers. The four-time defending AFC West champions are scuffling along at 3-5 because of an unfathomable number of turnovers and special teams blunders in Norv Turner's fourth season as head coach.

Rivers says he'd happily trade some of those yards for a few more wins.

win a superbowl or not Marino was one of the best ever. Rivers came from a good class of QB's. He has the best numbers and no Superbowls. Makes you wonder if sometimes guys are just jinxed. It will be interesting to see when the Chargers win he SB this season.

it's the dilfer/marino question

Would you rather be a mediocre at best career qb with a ring or one of the greats without one?

Surprised you talking about a Pittsburgh guy like that - lol

I disagree. The first thing I think most people think about Marino is one of the games purest quarterbacks who could chuck it as well as anyone.

Unfortunately he had no running game or defense most of the years and was never able to win a Super Bowl

Put Marino on the 49ers those years, he would have won! But it is what it is and you right, he didn't win one.

As far as Rivers, it's a long season and I don't think he will break this record but he does put up some big numbers, hard to argue that really
