Am I missing something what exactly do the Lions see in him that I simply don't to not only make him the Number 1 pick but to guarantee him the most amount of money ever in an NFL contract? Well I guess it is the Lions so I shouldn't be that friggen shocked

One can't blame the Lions for making the pick, it's not like this guy is perceived as being a reach and they overlooked far more obvious choices at number one. If he busts, so be it, but there was by no means a myriad of can't-miss options from which to choose.
What one can blame them for is seemingly negotiating against themselves. This guy was not worth breaking the bank for. if either the tackle or linebacker were willing to take significantly less money, then draft those guys instead. They would have filled needs too, and there would have been more money left with which to work. Foolishly, teams seem to draft solely on upside. If Matthew Stafford went elsewhere and did well, the Lions would never hear the end of it. So it seems like that pressure led them to draft him. I don't think that makes any sense, who cares how someone does somewhere else, it's not relevant, it's far more important how he would do playing for your team. Not every team's situation is comparable, someone may be a natural fit in one place and a horrible flop in another. And who knows if the Lions and Stafford are a good fit. This same thing is what is happening with Mark Sanchez. He barely played, decided to come out, a decision which raised eyebrows with many people at the time, and now hype running out of control means he could be drafted as high as fourth or fifth, because no one wants to live with the future embarrassment of passing him by. And unfortunately, QB is a position where you normally shouldn't play someone right away. But with such large money being shelled out, the pressure to see a return on investment is huge, which would mean playing Stafford early and possibly ruining him. And this sets the tone of the remainder of the draft for the Lions, they have sunk so much into a QB, now they need to shore up the offense around him. They don't need any more offensive skill players (WR, RB), although that has not stopped them before (Mike Williams), but they could well pick a tight end and left tackle with their next two picks at 20 and 33. Sadly, it's their defense that really needs attention, far more than their offense. |

they keep on making the same mistakes, its really a shame for stafford as this may ruin his career, and i think he would do well in the right situation
lions are never the right situation

damn talk about overpaid, holy shit guy struggled to win college games and you pay him this amount of money to join an 0-16 team and possibly ride the pine for a year before he comes in and leads the team winless again. i strongly dislike this guy, reminds me of alllllll the hype surrounding Cutler when he came out of college. i hope he has some success for the sole purpose that I dont think the lions and the city of detroit's grave can be dug any deeper
On a side note, rumor is Pats are looking to trade into the top 10

It seems a rediculously high salary, but they would not have paid much less for anyone else. What the NFL and the union has to do is limit rookies salaries. Put a Cap on them. You would think that the older players would be demanding this because it is the 6th year veteran who is an average player that will be the first one cut from a team because of Salary Cap issues.

And rest assured someone will pay something even stupider next year or the year after. It's the mechanics of the marketplace that drive this out-of control spiral, not the individual teams. One can mock the Lions all day, but they paid the going rate for the #1 pick. Another team would have done the same thing.
