Top 12 QB's of All Time

This was Peter King's list in his column today. Think we have had this debate before, but always a good one

Good list or bad? Who do you move in or out?

1. Otto Graham. Easy. Ten seasons, seven championships, seven passing titles.

2. Sammy Baugh. Had the best season of any player ever in 1943. Led the NFL in passing, punting and, as one of the best safeties in football, in interceptions.

3. Joe Montana. Made everyone copy Walsh's high-tech offense, and won four titles in a decade.

4. Johnny Unitas. First great modern quarterback, and great in the clutch. He'd be higher if he won more than one title in his last 14 seasons.

5. Brett Favre. Most durable, most productive quarterback of all time. Marred by only one title.

6. Peyton Manning. Could break every record if Favre ever retires. Needs another championship or two to climb the list.

7. John Elway. Two titles, though they came late, capped the career of a Unitas-type with legs.

8. Dan Marino. Prototype dropback quarterback who, arguably, was the model for the pocket quarterback of the last 40 years.

9. Roger Staubach. Might be the best player/athlete/leader of a quarterback ever, and he edges Steve Young in my book with a second title and three more title-game appearances.

10. Tom Brady. Three Super Bowl wins by age 27, and a fourth appearance at 30.

11. Bart Starr. All he did was win -- five NFL titles, including the first two Super Bowl titles, both ending with him being MVP.

12. Terry Bradshaw. Rebounded from a horrible start to his career to lead the Steelers to four Super Bowls in six years.

Manning ahread of Favre in my book. It is very hard to have a list with qbs from the 40's versus modern day qbs.

Sammy Baugh getting QB credit for his time at safety and punter, should not count towards greatest QB of all time

How much tape if any have you seen on the top 2 QB's?

1. Otto Graham. Easy. Ten seasons, seven championships, seven passing titles.

2. Sammy Baugh. Had the best season of any player ever in 1943. Led the NFL in passing, punting and, as one of the best safeties in football, in interceptions.

9. Roger Staubach. Might be the best player/athlete/leader of a quarterback ever, and he edges Steve Young in my book with a second title and three more title-game appearances.

I do believe that your #12 QB beat Roger Staubach heads up in two super bowls and won 4 total. How Roger could he be ranked ahead of Terry????????

would love to hear your reasoning sir..............

The question is - are these in order? If so, the list is garbage. However, if this is the top 12 in no particular order, then I have to say it's pretty good. Any list with Favre ahead of Marino makes me laugh.

Am confused, Why would a list having Favre listed ahead of Marino make you laugh? He has 45 plus TD's more, about 5000 yards more lifetime and most importantly has won at least one Super Bowl title.

Personally think Favre is ranked too high, but should be ahead of Marino

Anyone else be suprised to know Dave Krieg is in the Top 10 All Time in TD passes?

Also think Fran Tarkenton deserves to be on here. 3rd in TD passes, yards etc. Never won the big one, but was in 4 of them, more than most on the list.

Johnny U will always be my favorite QB

When I was living in Louisville when I was younger, my family lived next door to a secretary in the athletic dept. at the University of Louisville.

Johnny U went there and was still close to the dept. The secretary told him what a big football fan I was and asked if he would autograph a picture for me. He said sure and wondered about the frame for the picture. She said she didn't have a frame and he bought one himself out of his own money for me.

That's the kind of guy he was. My most prized possession.

Because Marino was a better quarterback than Favre. I know the knock on Marino is the lack of Super Bowls, but I think that is largely unfair (as it is to Tarkenton), because it wasn't like Marino was the reason they fell short. In fact, if you look back at their best years, it was just the opposite. He'd play well even against dime defenses all game (because they had no running game), only to see the Bills or whoever score at will against their pitiful D.

Look at their career stats-
Favre - 274 G, 61% Winning percentage, 61% completion percentage, 65,237 YDS, 465/310 TD/INT.
Marino - 242 G, 60% Winning percentage, 60% completion percentage, 61,361 YDS, 420/252 TD/INT

Per game it looks like this ....
Favre 238 YDS, 1.69 TD, 1.13 INT
Marino 253 YDS, 1.73 TD, 1.04 INT

Plus if you are old enough to have seen them both in their heyday.... would you really rather have Favre? As good as he is, he has made more boneheaded mistakes than any of the 12 QBs on the list. I don't see how anyone can deny that. Montana, Marino, Unitas, etc. were reliable game in-game out.

By comparison, by the way -
Dave Krieg averages - 179 yds, 1.22 TD, .93 INT
