Vick and Arena League

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)—The owner of a minor league football team that offered Michael Vick a contract told a newspaper he didn’t know about the publicity stunt and would not have approved it.

“I’m a dog lover and I don’t want anything to do with (Vick),” Albany Firebirds owner Walter Robb told The Times Union for a story posted on its Web site Tuesday night.

Earlier in the day, the team an arenafootball2 franchise, announced it had offered the 28-year-old quarterback a one-year contract at the league standard: $200 a week plus a $50 bonus for a win.

“That’s a joke,” Robb said. “Can you imagine him playing for $200 a week? I think (the offer) was a big mistake.”

The announcement was later pulled from the team’s Web site.

Firebirds general manager Garen Szablewski told The Times Union the team’s marketing department came up with the idea to make an offer to Vick.

“The process wasn’t thought through properly,” Szablewski said. “The right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing.”

Vick played for the Atlanta Falcons for six seasons before being convicted of bankrolling an interstate dog fighting business.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has not said if he will lift Vick’s suspension after he completes a 23-month prison sentence. Vick goes from federal prison to home confinement next month.

The Firebirds’ contract offer also required Vick donate $100,000 to a local humane society.

A call to Vick’s agent when the announcement of an offer was made was not immediately returned.

why in the fuk would he accept that? the pay is totally crap and they require a donation to charity? are they fricking insane? that is basically paying money to be employed..about as bad as ngo's requiring volunteers to pay for their expenses and also program fees...one can be paid more playing american football in the kazahkstan or czech pro leagues

to show prospective NFL employers that: (a) he is sincere in wanting to make amends for what he did; and (b) to show if he can still play.

Not saying he should do it, but it is not as crazy as you might think.

Seth: Fogell, this ID says that you're 25 years old. Why wouldn't you just put 21, man?
Fogell: Seth, Seth, Seth. Listen up, ass-face: every day, hundreds of kids go into the liquor store with fake IDs, and every single one says they're 21. Pssh, how many 21 year olds do you think there are in this town? It's called f*cking strategy, alright?

If he is being offered a QB position he should take it no matter what they are paying him. He never was a QB so at least this gives him an opportunity to play the position one more time. If he wants back in the NFL the best he will be is a WR or RB. I honestly don't think he is worth $200 a week. Ask any dog they will agree.

This sounds more like an insult to Vick's intelligence than anything else.

In the NFL the hardest position to fill is QB. The NFL lacks in this position for sure so he will get a look. It still doesn't change the fact that the guy is not a QB. He doesn't have the brain power to run a team nor the leadership skills. He can run like the wind but his arm is horrible and his first thought is to run not pass. I know he will get a look Romo but he doesn't have the skills to lead any team to the SuperBowl. The goal of every team is to reach the superbowl. It will never happen for whatever team decides to take this want to be QB.
Romo, let me ask you a question. Would you want him as your starting QB of your favorite team ?

Look at his numbers as a QB, numbers don't lie.

steel lets face it if they aren't in a gold and black uniform none of them are worth paying $200 a week to play football

Based on his years in Atlanta, no one can really say whether Vick could have been a good pro quarterback, because he had the worst receivers in the league to work with. I would like to see what might happen with a real team.

Good point but many QB's in the NFL have less then perfect receivers and they don't throw high over the middle and miss receivers completely. His view in the pocket is horrible and his skills sets are below average. Fantastic athlete just not a QB. If you go back and look at his games you will see that he lacks confidence in his arm which is why he turns to his legs and runs as much as he does. He never could read a defense and if his first out was covered he turned to his legs. Again, good athlete but horrible QB.
