Vinovich and Blakeman are the referees for the Conference Championships

Bill Vinovich and Clete Blakeman to the Conference Championship games on Sunday. Vinovich will have the NFC game between the Rams and Saints; Blakeman will be heading the crew for the AFC title match between the Patriots and Chiefs.

NFC CHAMPIONSHIP:

Bill Vinovich was the referee in Super Bowl XLIX and will now head his third Conference Championship in four seasons.

Vinovich was hired by the NFL in 2001, and was on medical leave for 5 seasons, making this his 13th season on the field. While on leave, Vinovich worked as a regional supervisor and grader in the league office. He is now completing his 10th season, nonconsecutive, as referee.

This is his 12th postseason assignment and 4th Conference Championship. He has also worked 3 Wild Card Playoffs, 4 Divisional Playoffs, and the Super Bowl.

Vinovich officiated the game between these two teams earlier this season in Week 9, which also took place in New Orleans.

Vinovich lives in Lake Forest, Calif., and is a Division I college basketball referee and a certified public accountant.

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP:

After missing the playoffs entirely following the 2016 season, Clete Blakeman will now work his second consecutive Conference Championship.

Blakeman was hired by the league in 2008, worked two seasons as a field judge, and is now in his 9th season as referee.

This is his 9th postseason assignment, including 4 Wild Card Playoffs, 2 Divisional Playoffs, 2 Conference Championships, and Super Bowl 50.

Blakeman is a personal-injury attorney in Omaha, Neb., where he lives with his wife and two children.

FWIW - he was the Deflategate ref!!

As always, itís unwise to place a wager based solely on the past results of referees. This is just one more piece of information to make you a more informed gambler.

Note: Records include regular season and playoff games since 2003.

Bill Vinovich Betting Trends (NFC Championship)

Favorites: 39-44-2 against the spread (ATS) (47.0%, -6.51 units)
Home Teams: 38-44-2 ATS (46.3%, -7.95 units)
Overs: 37-47-1 (44.0%, -11.63 units)
Saints: 4-3 ATS
Rams: 0-5 ATS

In games that Bill Vinovich has overseen, the under is 47-37-1 (56%) including 29-18-1 (62%) in the past three seasons. According to Pro Football Reference, there have been 22.4% fewer penalty yards per game relative to the average official when Vinovich has been in charge the past three seasons.

Fewer penalty yards likely leads to fewer first downs and thus less scoring.

Why Rams fans donít want to see Vinovich ...

In Rams games with Vinovich, the team is 0-5 straight up (SU) and 0-5 ATS. A majority of spread tickets are on Jared Goff and Co. in the NFC Championship game.

Rams fans are so mad that Vinovich will be wearing a striped shirt on Sunday that they started a petition to have him removed from the game.

Why Saints fans donít want to see Vinovich ...

In all Saints games that Vinovich has been a part of going back to 2002, New Orleans is 10-5 SU. If I had to guess, Saints fans are only nervous that Vinovich will be in the Superdome out of fear these trends reverse.

Clete Blakeman Betting Trends (AFC Championship)

Favorites: 63-73-5 ATS (46.3%, -12.38 units)
Home Teams: 63-71-5 ATS (47.0%, -10.32 units)
Overs: 67-72-2 (48.2%, -7.77 units)
Chiefs: 4-2-2 ATS
Patriots: 2-6 ATS

Nobody believes in the Patriots, at least that is what Tom Brady and Julian Edelman would have you think. The oddsmakers have listed New England as an underdog in the AFC title game, but Blakeman has always been kind to the pooches. When Blakeman has the whistle, dogs have gone 73-63-5 ATS, including 6-1 ATS in the playoffs.

Why Chiefs fans donít want to see Blakeman ...

In last yearís AFC Championship game, the Patriots rallied from down 20-10 in the fourth quarter to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars. Guess who the first person was to congratulate Tom Brady after the victory?

Thatís right, Clete himself.

Why Patriots fans donít want to see Blakeman ...

Clearly, the Pats get all the breaks. Of course, Blakeman was also one of two officials who measured the PSI in the footballs at halftime of the 2014-15 AFC Championship game that sparked Deflategate.

So maybe Blakeman and Brady arenít besties.

The # on last week's games, "total penalties both teams":

14' Indy/KC
12' SD/NE
12' Philly/NO
? Dal/LA

KC game landed on 16, for an Over (Indy 10, KC 6.)

NE game landed 14 (SD 5, NE 9) for an Over, but bad beat as Pats had three unnecessary, knucklehead penalties in Q4 with a big lead at 4 min left or less, including a roughing the passer at 1:13. Very un-Belichick-like.)

NO landed on 15, with a whopping 11 by NO alone.

LA game landed on 8, 4 each, for an Under.

From Yahoo:
It turns out the Rams have lost every game Vinovich has officiated since his return from health issues several years ago, all eight of them. Los Angeles fan, Andrew Liptock, has started a petition at change.org, directed to NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell, to have Vinovich removed as referee for Sunday.

Liptock makes some good arguments in his petition — aside from that 0-8 mark since 2012, he notes that Vinovich’s crew has always penalized the Rams more than their opponents.

That’s true: via the statistics at pro-football-reference.com, Vinovich’s crew has penalized the Rams 61 times for 573 yards, while opponents were penalized 36 times for 317 yards."

Avg # of penalties, Vinovich/Rams games: 12

Question is - with all the noise about Vinovich in Rams games, will it have any effect on his penalty calls?
Will he consciously or unconsciously hesitate to throw a flag against them?

Even if it does, he's only one guy on the crew.

Nerves ride higher in playoff games, more at stake.
Do jitters lead to more penalties in conf champ games?

Jags/Pats last year? 7! And 6 were on the Jags, just ONE on Pats (which is why I noted above 9 is unusual for a Belichick team in playoffs. Last year's three post-season games they committed 4 vs Tenn, 1 vs Jags, and 1 in SB.)
Vikings/Eagles? 6! Minn had 2, Philly 4.

If they hang an 11' or 12' on NE/KC I'm on the Under. If Andy can keep his guys to 7-8 it should be bank.
Negative stat - earlier meeting saw 21, 15 by KC.

"Total penalties" lines:

LA/NO 11'
NE/KC 13'

And on the price they favored the Over in both.

Outcome: LA 7, NO 3; Under
Outcome: NE 6, KC 4; Under

They hung a bad # on NE/KC, and at -105.

I think we have something that we could finally replace Don Dekingers blown call in the 85 world series between the Royals and the Cardinals.
no question in my mind that yesterday's blatant no call will be the worst in history of sports.

John Parry will be the referee...19th season and 12th as referee. Super Bowl LIII will be Parry’s 13th postseason assignment.

Off the top of my head, first thought is Parry throws his flag so often you'd think it was red hot and burning his ass.

With fallout after the Saints game non-call, will refs be quicker to toss a flag next week? Professionalism says no, but?

My first look for "total # of penalties" would be the Over.

But . . .

In Parry's stint as head ref in NYG/NE Superbowl there were only 9 penalties, 4 NYG, 5 NE.

His recent Dal/LAR playoff game saw 8, 4 each.

Here are # of penalties called in Parry's games in 2018:
15, 9, 7, 14, 8, 11, 20, 5, 17, 15 (Det 7, LAR 8), 10, 18 (Pitt 14, Pats 4), 21, 17, 8 (Dal 4, LAR 4).
Avg per: 13

Recent Super Bowls:
Phil/NE 7; Phil 6, NE 1
Atl/NE 14, NE 4, Atl 9
NE/Sea 12; Sea 7 NE 5

I haven't looked for the # yet, but I expect it will be around 10' or 11'.
"Total # of penalties" is a fun, in-game prop to root along with.
I might bet it again this week, Ov or Un (leaning Under due to NE stats), based on what # they hang (especially if it's off like the # on last week's KC game.) Will post if I do.
