Kyrie Irving requesting trade out of Cleveland to find bigger role

Kyrie Irving is ready to end his run with the Cleveland Cavaliers, as league sources told ESPN that the guard has asked the team to trade him.

The request came last week and was made to Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. Irving has expressed that he wants to play in a situation where he can be more of a focal point and that he no longer wants to play alongside LeBron James, sources said.

Among several possibilities discussed in Irving's meeting with the Cavaliers, the San Antonio Spurs were raised as a preferred destination, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Other teams Irving said he'd be willing to join were the New York Knicks, Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves, league sources told ESPN. Irving also considered the Chicago Bulls before the club traded Jimmy Butler, league sources told ESPN's Ian Begley.

I agree, maybe Irving is better than IT, but the difference between them isn't big enough to make any drastic changes, the C's problem this year will be the same as last year, rebounding. Just the fact that there's so much turmoil in Cleveland helps the Celtics.

You would think, now is the perfect time to capitalize. But him and IT most likely can't play together and that would be the worst defensive backcourt in the NBA

The Cavaliers and Celtics have agreed on a deal that would send Kyrie Irving to Boston in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the Nets' unprotected 2018 first-round pick,

I disagree, there's no way I would have included the Brooklyn pick, it's probably the first pick in next year's draft, as a Celtics fan I don't like this trade at all, I don't think the difference between Irving and IT is worth what the Celtics gave up

If Kyrie stays more than 2 years, I am fine with it. If he doesn't, it could be a tough one. I was hoping they would give up the Lakers pick and not the Nets but I really like the trade other than that.

No pair of 25 points-per-game scorers have ever been swapped for each other the following season. Until now Kyrie Irving and Isaiah Thomas will be the first in NBA history (via Elias Sports Bureau).

Woj is saying the Celtics are confident they'll be able to resign Irving after two years, and I know I'm biased, but Boston is a special place when it comes to basketball, I have to think Irving will love playing there and will agree to stay. The Cavs wanted Tatum bad, but Danny wouldn't include him, so it had to be Brooklyn's pick. The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to be okay with it, I have trust in Danny and Brad

Tatum is going to be an absolute fucking stud. I kept hearing the Cavs wanted him included and they wouldn't do it without him. I was so stoked when I heard he wasn't included and neither was brown. They were looking for a way to clear space for them to play and that was sending crowder out. They achieved that too. If he stays more than 2 years it is a great trade!

I agree with you about Tatum, I saw a lot of him in Summer League, and I had to keep reminding myself that he's only 19, think about what he'll be in 3-4 years, the kid's going to be great I agree with you, I'm not as high on Jaylen Brown, but Danny loves the kid, so I'll defer to his judgment and we still have next year's Lakers pick if it falls between 2-5, so that takes the sting away a little of trading the Brooklyn pick

I'm with you on brown but he seemed to get better and better with playing time last year. I think he has a chance to be very good too. The kid is so athletic and he can do it all.

i don't know why the cavs would trade him to the celtics who already were the #1 seed in the east last season. imo this makes the celtics the favs to win the eastern conference this season. i wonder what lebron thinks of this trade. imo he leaves the cavs again most likely to the western conf .

I like the trade, The Brooklyn pick probably won't be the first pick, there are worse teams than the Nets. Isiah wanted a super max deal after this year and that wasn't going to happen. The Celtics have so many picks stock piled, at some point they have to do something with them. Kyrie scores 25 on a team as the 2nd option, Isiah scored 25 when he was the 1st option in Boston. He's 4 yrs older than Kyrie and 1 dimensional on offense, run the high pick and ethier drive hard to the rim or put up a 3. Cleveland showed that they knew how to shut down his game in the playoffs. I've been talking with a bunch of guys in Ma. they're mixed 50/50 on the deal but when you weigh in the $$ and the real possibility that they wouldn't keep IT after this year, most are leaning to liking it.
