Major free throw discrepancy tonight
Remember back in 2002 how much everyone was crying about the Lakers getting preferential treatment from the officials during game 6 of the Western Conference Finals at Sacramento? Facing elimination down 3 games to 2, the Lakers needed a win to force game 7 in L.A.
During that game the free throw and foul discrepancy was: Los Angeles - 24 fouls against, 34/40 on free throws Sacramento - 31 fouls against, 18/25 on free throws L.A. was +15 on free throw attempts Michael Wilbon of The Washington Post called it the worst officiated game he had ever seen. Even consumer advocate Ralph Nader felt the need to get involved concerning the game. Well consider the stats from game 2 of the NBA Finals tonight: Los Angeles - 28 fouls against, 10/10 on free throws Boston - 21 fouls against, 27/38 on free throws Boston was +28 on free throw attempts Leon Powe was 9/13 on free throw attempts, giving him 3 attempts more than the Lakers as a team, and nearly double the 7 free throw attempts by Kobe Bryant. Kobe complained several times for "And 1" free throw attempts on made baskets, and was given a technical for such complaints once. I think it is strange that Boston's 8th man gets more respect than the MVP of the NBA. The home ref advantage this year is simply out of control. Conspiracy theory rant /off. |

i dont believe in conspiracies..i do believe in the referees getting caught up in the loudness of the crowd.
Boston deserved more free throws, but not 28 more.

I didn't see the Lakers do anything on offense tonight that would force the Celtics to foul...perimeter shooting doesn't cut it.

Phil Jackson on the officiating
Taken from Phil Jackson's postgame press conference:
"I'm more struck at the fact that Leon Pow, err Powe, excuse me for mispronouncing his name, gets more foul shots than our whole team does in 14 minutes of play. That's ridiculous. You can't play from a deficit like that, that we had...19-2 in the first half (free throws) in situations like that. I've never seen a game like that in all these years that's I've coached in The Finals. Unbelievable." But hey, I guess he's biased. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=lal Jackson's comments can be found towards the end of the video titled: "KG Is Ready To Take The Show On The Road" |
