Michael Curry will be Detroit Pistons’ next coach
DETROIT (AP)—Michael Curry will be the next coach of the Detroit Pistons after having played for the team and worked as an assistant.
Detroit Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars tells The Associated Press that Curry will be introduced at a news conference on Tuesday. Curry agreed to a three-year deal worth $2.5 million a year, with the team holding the option for a fourth season. He replaces Flip Saunders, who was fired last week. Curry served as an assistant on Saunders’ staff.

This seems like a strange hire to me. Curry played with Prince, Billups, and Hamilton as recently as 2002-2003, and although he averaged 19.9 minutes a game and made 77 starts that year, he averages of 3.0 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists show he wasn't particularly good at anything.
Although it is true that a person's ability as a player is in no way related to a person's ability as a coach, don't you think somewhere in the back of Billups and Hamiltons minds they're going to think "Hey aren't you that guy who used to play with us, who uh...didn't really do anything?" I just don't see how this guy is going to have the attention of his key players. Imagine Cliff Levingston trying to coach Michael Jordan and Scotty Pippen if you need an easier analogy. I don't see how this is going to work. |
