Question Where does Greg Popovich rank as an all-time coach?

Is he in the best 5 ever discussion?

Seth: Fogell, this ID says that you're 25 years old. Why wouldn't you just put 21, man?
Fogell: Seth, Seth, Seth. Listen up, ass-face: every day, hundreds of kids go into the liquor store with fake IDs, and every single one says they're 21. Pssh, how many 21 year olds do you think there are in this town? It's called f*cking strategy, alright?

Top 5...hands down...the kind of coach he as without the playbook on the court (having his team prepared, being a first class organization) puts him right up there.

To me, he's a pretty good coach, but when you've had Duncan this whole time - kind of takes away the magic... Same with Jackson, Riles... etc. Show me a great coach and I'll show you even greater players... JMHO.

sorry to HighJack the thread...

HArdly anyone wins with bad players and some coaches don't win with great players (ex: Avery Johnson)

i agree. a good coach winning with bad players is less likely than good players winning with bad coach. especially in NBA

I'd say you could definitely make an argument for Pop being in the top 5 all time. I think the only clear cut #1 coach is Auerbach, the rest you can argue for/against. In the playoffs he will move up to 3rd all time in most victories with his next win. He currently ranks 2nd all time in playoff winning percentage behind only Phil Jackson.

He has a .677 regular season winning percentage as well compared to Phil Jackson's at .700 and Auerbach's at .662.

I'd put my top 5 as Auerbach, Jackson, Riley, Pop, and Daly.

Not using this as an arguement against Phil, but the championships he has won have been with 2 legit superstars - Jordan/Pippen, Shaq/Kobe. Either way you slice it though, 9 rings is 9 rings.

You could definitely say that Pop had 2 true superstars in 1999 when he won it (Duncan's 2nd year & Robinson at the back end of his prime), but other than that, he has really only had Duncan. Their 2003 championship run had Duncan in his prime and Robinson retired immediately after. Parker and Manu were just coming into the league. Their 2005 run again was mainly Duncan. Parker and Manu were good though too, but Duncan was still the true superstar. I think last year's run saw Duncan finally take a back seat, but he was will the focal point of the offense. I would certainly make the argument that Pop has done more with less.

damn, Jack just doesn't quit... It's OK I have thick skin

I would argue that avery is way over-rated... Also, it's hard to win with no inside presence (DAMP???)...

only play Avery knows is the pick and roll...

i come from chicago and experienced all the jackson championships

imo, pop is the #1 coach of all time. he has proven more adept at in-game fixes, and is better at adjusting between games than any other coach i have seen. look at game 6 and 7 in this last series...he figures out NO and puts together a gameplan that wins from wire to wire away in game 7

more amazingly they make pop a +225 dog in a series against jackson's team. i guess home court must be worth a lot because you are about to see coaching in action when pop rolls over phil

red was a genius also but comes from a time when there was a lot less competition. he was great but i'll still take pop over anybody at this point
