Canadiens trade goaltender Jaroslav Halak to St. Louis Blues

MONTREAL—The Montreal Canadiens have emptied their crowded crease, sending goaltender Jaroslav Halak to the St. Louis Blues.

The Canadiens will receive prospects forwards Lars Eller and Ian Schultz in the deal.

Halak played a starring role for the Habs this spring as they made a surprising run to the Eastern Conference final.

But the team had to make a choice between him and Carey Price as both are set to become restricted free agents on July 1.

They split the starting duties during the regular season but weren’t eager to continue with that arrangement.

The 25-year-old Halak was drafted by Montreal in 2003 and had spent his entire career in the organization.

Its an interesting deal, and this assures that Price will be the main man in Montreal. The pressure will be immense this season for him & I hope he can turn his career around. If he struggles, I hate to be him & the GM Gauthier.

Considering his play in the playoffs, I am not certain this was a good move at all.... interesting yes but only time will tell.

In business you have to sell when it's hot and in high demand to get maximum for it.

Price has been their future goaltender from the beginning. He's still young and immature but let's hope for Hab fans the future has arrived with the 2010-11 season.

And Price hasn't done squat lately. Guy is terrible in the net.

IMO Price will at most be an average goalie. He's young but there is enough of a track record. He is like an Andrew Raycroft type. If the Bruins face the Habs, no matter what game, gimme Price all day in net over Halak.

The Habs are determined to sink or swim with Price. The toughest thing to do in sports is to admit a mistake was made and move on from it. Whether drafting him was a mistake or not is difficult to say, but they have bent over backwards to give him chances and he hasn't shown very much. Now he has to.

Who knows, maybe Halak flops under the burden of being an undisputed number one and this Danish guy turns out to be great.

Get maximum for it?? They got two average prospects for the hottest goaltender in hockey. Habs got raped, and could have got a lot more IMO.

I agree, you've got the goalie that carried them in the playoffs. You'd think they could've gotten more, if not then why move him?

Yep... I've read that GMs around the league were utterly stunned he went so early, and for so little, and wasn't put up on a lottery type situation with teams bidding against each other for him closer to the draft or even at the draft. I mean, Halak is only 25, and has huge value.

Good post here, totally agree. Way too soon with draft still 10 days away and the guy did it when it mattered and is 25!! Time will tell but not a good move imo
