NHL roundup: Devils top Leafs to stay unbeaten
October 12, 2017

TORONTO -- Miles Wood and Pavel Zacha each scored two goals, Brian Gibbons scored while killing off a two-man disadvantage, and the New Jersey Devils defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-3 on Wednesday in a battle of previously unbeaten teams.

Goaltender Cory Schneider made 47 saves for the Devils.

Blake Coleman added a goal for the Devils, and Will Butcher and Adam Henrique had two assists apiece.

James van Riemsdyk, Dominic Moore and Auston Matthews scored for Toronto, and Maple Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen stopped 25 shots.

Penguins 3, Capitals 2

WASHINGTON -- Patric Hornqvist notched a goal and an assist in his first game of the season, Matt Murray stopped 20 shots, and Pittsburgh defeated Washington.

Kris Letang and Conor Sheary also scored for the Penguins, who converted 3 of 6 power play chances. Hornqvist returned after missing the first three games of the season following a procedure on his right hand in the offseason.

The Capitals' Christian Djoos, making his NHL debut, had a goal and assisted on Alex Ovechkin's eighth goal of the season. Braden Holtby made 33 saves for Washington.

Avalanche 6, Bruins 3

DENVER -- Sven Andrighetto had two goals, Matt Duchene and Nail Yakupov had a goal and an assist each, and Colorado held off Boston's third-period rally.

Semyon Varlamov stopped 20 shots, Tyson Jost and Alexander Kerfoot also scored, and Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog had two assists apiece for Colorado. The Avalanche swept the home-and-home series with the Bruins.

Brad Marchand, Tim Schaller and Torey Krug scored for Boston. Tuukka Rask, who was pulled after the second period, stopped 22 of 26 shots. Backup Anton Khudobin was a perfect 9-for-9 in the third period.

Ducks 3, Islanders 2

ANAHEIM, Calif -- Anaheim failed to score on four power plays, making the Ducks 0-for-15 on the season, but got goals from three different players and 39 saves from John Gibson to snap a two-game losing streak.

The Islanders failed to score on five power plays and are 0-and-15 to open the season. They lost despite finishing with a 41-30 edge in shots.

Andrew Cogliano, Rickard Rakell and Patrick Eaves scored for the Ducks, who took the lead for good at 2-1 in the second period. Brock Nelson had two goals for New York, and Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak made 27 saves.

Flames bounce back to defeat Kings in OT in Jagr debut
Blow two-goal lead but win when Monahan scores 1:02 into overtime

LOS ANGELES -- Sean Monahan scored 1:02 into overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 4-3 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center on Wednesday.

Monahan got to the front of the crease for a one-timer off TJ Brodie's pass to give the Flames their third straight win.

Matthew Tkachuk scored twice for his second multigoal game in the NHL, and Michael Frolik had a goal and an assist for Calgary (3-1-0). Mike Smith made 42 saves.

Forward Jaromir Jagr, the No. 2 scorer in NHL history, played his first game for Calgary after signing a one-year contract last Wednesday. He did not have a shot on goal and was minus-1 in 13:38.

After Los Angeles took a 3-2 lead on tip-in goals by Dustin Brown 14 seconds into the third period and at 1:58, Tkachuk beat Jonathan Quick with a wrist shot between the goalie's legs to tie the game 3-3 at 10:59.

Tkachuk's second of the night was the first goal allowed by the Kings in the third period this season.

Brown had his first multigoal game since he scored twice in a 6-2 win at the Arizona Coyotes on Feb. 2, 2016.

Anze Kopitar had a goal and an assist, and the Kings (2-0-1) failed to start the season with three straight wins for the first time since 2002-03. Quick made 33 saves.

Brown has five points (three goals, two assists) in two games against Pacific Division opponents.

The Flames jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Tkachuk followed up on his own rebound on a wraparound for a power-play goal at 3:56 to make it 1-0, and Frolik scored into an open net off Johnny Gaudreau's pass between Doughty's legs at 7:47 to put Calgary up 2-0.

Gaudreau had two assists. He has seven points (one goal, six assists) during a three-game point streak.

Kopitar scored his third goal at 15:44 of the second period to cut the Flames lead to 2-1.

Kings forward Kyle Clifford left the game midway through the second period with an upper-body injury after taking a hard hit in the corner.

STREAKY TEAMS
Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak
Anaheim 0-3 past three overall Tampa Bay Over 3-0 past three overall
St. Louis 4-0 past four overall Toronto Over 3-0 past three overall
San Jose 0-2 past two overall Washington Over 3-0 past three overall
Vegas 3-0 past three overall Winnipeg Over 3-0 past three overall

Knight Time

The Vegas Golden Knights made National Hockey League history on Tuesday night with their 5-2 victory against the visiting Arizona Coyotes. They're the first expansion team to ever start out 3-0 in the NHL. It has been 50 years since the Oakland Seals and Los Angeles Kings had even won two straight out of the box. The Golden Knights have built a solid defensemen corps with a veteran netminder and it's paying off in spades. Instead of looking like an expansion team, this club is looking like an instant contender. But it's early. Way early.

Shootout Sens

The Ottawa Senators have played three games, and all three times the contest has been decided by a shootout. The first two games resulted in a shootout loss, but Tuesday's game in Vancouver ended up as a 3-2 victory in favor of Craig Anderson and the visitors. For the second straight game the under cashed for total bettors, too, as Ottawa is averaging 2.7 goals per game while allowing just 2.0 GPG over the past two outings.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, October 11

The Penguins and Capitals square off in front of a national audience, and it's usually a high-scoring affair when these two teams tangle. The over is 15-4-2 in the past 21 games for the Penguins while working on three or more dayws of rest dating back to last season, while going 17-8-1 in the past 26 road games against a team with a home winning percentage over .600. For the Capitals, the over is 5-1 in the past six against Eastern Conference teams. The road team has connected in five of the previous seven regular-season battles between these rivals.

The Flames just snapped a 29-game losing streak at Anaheim on Monday, so what can Calgary do for an encore? They haven't struggled as much over the years, but they're 1-4 over the past five visits to Staples Center. Good goaltending has ruled the day when these two Western Conference teams get together, too, going 12-3-1 in the past 16 meetings in Los Angeles and 22-7-4 in the past 33 meetings overall. The under is also 7-1-4 in Calgary's past 12 road games dating back to last season.

Thursday, October 12

The Wild pay a visit to the Windy City on Thursday. Trips to Chicago haven't ended very well for Minnesota, as they're just 5-13 in their past 18 trips to United Center. The Blackhawks will be playing their third game in four days, and they usually get stronger as the games are bunched together. They're 9-1 in their past 10 games in a 3-in-4 (three games in four days) situation. Picking on the dregs of the league has also been their calling card, going 60-17 over the past 77 against teams with a winning percentage under .400. While it's early to count Minnesota as a 'losing team' after just one game, it counts nonetheless.

The Red Wings are in rebuilding mode after missing the playoffs last season. The Coyotes are off to a terrible start, losing a home-and-home to the expansion Golden Knights. Something's gotta give when these sides meet, right? Detroit hopes their mastery of Arizona continues despite a downgrade in personnel. The Red Wings are an impressive 43-18-6 in the past 67 meetings with the Coyotes, and 24-8-3 in the past 35 trips to Glendale. The road team has also cashed in five of the past six meetings in this series. Total bettors might also like the over, as it is 3-1-1 in the past five in the series and 3-1-2 in the past six in Arizona.

Friday, October 13

The Blue Jackets host the Rangers on Friday night in Ohio's capital city. This was a crazy series in 2016-17, with the Rangers going 3-2 against the Jackets. In the final four meetings of the season, each team won on the other's ice. The Jackets outscored the Rangers 21-16, so you can expect some fireworks in this one. New York hasn't been very good on offense, outside of their five-goal outburst in Toronto last Saturday, posting two or fewer goals in three of their four outings. The Jackets have been hard to figure, as they routed the Islanders 5-0 in their opener, they were routed in Chicago last Saturday and then they won an overtime squeaker on the road in Carolina by a 2-1 score. So far you never know who is going to show up.

The Avalanche will host the Ducks on Friday night in the Mile High City, and they hope to have much better success than they did last season against Anaheim. They scored just one goal in each of the three games, all losses, while being outscored 11-3. If there was a time to get the Ducks, it is right now. They haven't exactly fired out of the chute, allowing 2.33 GPG while allowing 3.0 GPG. That includes a shutout loss at home to the Flames, finally seeing a winning streak at home against Calgary go up in smoke.

Saturday, October 14

Rivals battling on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday night, as the Maple Leafs invade Bell Centre to take on Les Habitants. The Maple Leafs offense has been obscene in the early going, averaging an amazing 6.33 GPG. Of course, their defense has left a lot to be desired, too, yielding 3.33 GPG. Needless to say, the 'over' is a perfect 3-0 for the Buds. The good news for the Habs is that they limited the Blackhawks to just three goals on Tuesday night in Montreal's home opener. The bad news is that Montreal has compiled just two total goals over the past three outings after opening with a 3-2 shootout win in Buffalo back on Oct. 5.

Not many teams have had a lot of success against the Capitals in recent seasons, but the Florida Panthers have held their own against Alex Ovechkin and company. They have won two of their previous three trips to D.C., and they're a respectable 5-4-3 in the past 12 meetings with the Caps, outscoring Washington 31-30 during the span. Not a lot of teams can lay claim to being able to go toe-to-toe with the defending President's Trophy winners like that.

Thursday’s six-pack

College football trends for this weekend:

— UConn is 8-19-1 in its last 28 games as a road underdog.

— Ohio U covered eight of its last ten true road games.

— Northern Illinois covered 7 of its last 9 games with Buffalo.

— Florida State covered its last six games against Duke.

— Minnesota covered 6 of its last 7 games with Michigan State.

— Northwestern is 5-10-1 vs spread in its last 16 games as a road favorite.

******************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

13) Red Sox fired John Farrell Wednesday; he went 432-378 as Boston’s manager, winning the World Series in his first season (2013) but winning only one playoff game (1-6) the last four years. Farrell had a health scare with cancer in 2015, but that is behind him now.

If the Red Sox hire Brad Ausmus, who worked with Boston GM Dave Dombrowski in Detroit, then it figures that the GM just thought that Ausmus is a better manager than Farrell.

This Tweet from writer Peter Abraham:
“Dombrowski said Farrell was fired for reasons he won’t disclose and that no level of team success would have prevented that.”

He would’ve fired Farrell even if the Red Sox won the World Series? Hard to believe.

12) Washington 5, Chicago 0- Game 5 is Thursday night at 8 in Washington.
New York 5, Cleveland 2— Indians lost last seven games when they had a chance to wrap up a series. New York-Houston ALCS starts Friday night.

11) New Jersey Giants suspended CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Wednesday when he came to practice and then went home without practicing- it apparently relates to something that happened on the sidelines during Sunday’s game with the Chargers.

10) Giants also lost 3 of their top 4 WR’s for the season in last week’s loss; of those four, only Sterling Shepard will be playing in Denver this weekend.

9) Utah Jazz big guy Rudy Gobert wears number 27 because he was the 27th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Not that he takes it personally or anything.

8) Butler Bulldogs are on their 4th basketball coach in the last six years, and they usually win. Texas Tech is on its 5th coach in eight years. Coaching can be a nomadic profession.

7) Guy named Tony Ressler owns the Atlanta Hawks; he is or was a minority owner of the Milwaukee Brewers. He has been married to actress Jami Gertz for 29 years— she was in movies like Less Than Zero, Sixteen Candles and Twister.

6) Minnesota Timberwolves have the longest active playoff drought in the NBA- 13 years.

5) Tennessee Vols are changing QB’s for their game with South Carolina this week; redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano gets the start over sophomore Quinten Dormady, who may transfer from Tennessee as a result of this.

4) Revenge in the CFL this week? On July 29, Calgary embarrassed Hamilton 60-1; Ti-Cats changed coaches shortly after that, and are now 4-2 in their last six games under new coach June Jones. Stampeders visit Hamilton this week on a serious roll; they’ve won 10 games in a row (8-1-1 vs spread).

3) South Alabama (+18) 19, Troy 8— Troy’s last game was an upset win at LSU, but teams that turn the ball over four times (-3) don’t win a whole lot.

2) Louisville brought in former Nevada/LSU coach Trent Johnson as an assistant, then fired assistant coach Jordan Fair, as fallout from the SneakerGate scandal continues to unfold.

1) If you have NBA TV and I think just about everyone does, Open Court is a good show to watch; there are two hour-long shows that were filmed this summer in Las Vegas, one with five NBA owners, the other with five coaches. Educational stuff if you like the NBA.

The Blues were 4-0-0 for the second time in franchise history but were playing their third road game in four nights. The Panthers (2-1-0) hadn't played since Saturday.

Roberto Luongo made 37 saves to pick up his first win of the season, Vincent Trocheck scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, and Jared McCann, Aaron Ekblad and Nick Bjugstad also tallied for Florida. Ekblad, Bjugstad and McCann added assists.

Paul Stastny and Vince Dunn scored and Jake Allen made 33 saves for the Blues.

The Penguins got goals from Matt Hunwick, Conor Sheary, Bryan Rust and Jake Guentzel.

Predators 4, Stars 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Rookie Samuel Girard scored his first NHL goal and assisted on the tiebreaking goal by Filip Forsberg less than three minutes later as Nashville stopped Dallas.

Pekka Rinne made 30 saves, and Viktor Arvidsson and P.K. Subban also scored for the Predators.

Jamie Benn gave the Stars a 1-0 lead at 8:04 of the first period on the power play, and Ben Bishop stopped 27 of 30 shots.

Friday’s six-pack

NFL trends for this weekend:

— Cleveland is 3-12 vs spread in its last fifteen games.

— Chiefs covered 10 of their last 11 games.

— Denver is 6-1 vs spread in game after its last seven byes.

— Falcons are 10-20 vs spread in last 30 games as a favorite.

— Arizona is 3-13 vs spread in its last 16 games.

— Houston is 8-1 in last nine games as a non-divisional home favorite.

**********************************

Friday’s List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend……

Things I’m looking for this weekend……
13) 49ers are playing on road for third week in row; since 1997, underdogs are 23-34-1 vs spread if they’re on road for the 3rd week in a row.

12) LSU is honoring the 2007 national champs Saturday night, which means Les Miles will be in the house. Maybe if they ask him really nice, he’ll come back and coach the Bayou Bengals, who already have a 37-7 loss at Miss State and a home loss to Troy this season.

11) Dolphins are 2-2, despite scoring three offensive TD’s in four games; their OL coach being fired for alleged drug use, and their having played one home game so far. Miami visits Atlanta this week, a Falcon team coming off a bye— Falcons are 6-2 after their last eight byes.

10) TCU is the last unbeaten team in the Big X; Kansas State covered 9 of its last 11 tries as a home underdog, but they’re coming off an OT loss to Texas.

9) Giants lost 3 of their top 4 WR’s to injury last week, then suspended one of their best DB’s for four weeks after a sideline confrontation with the coach LW. Giants are a double digit underdog in Denver this week; an 0-6 start would have people calling for more heads to roll.

8) Coming off of wins over USC/Oregon, Washington State has a trap game in Berkeley, where the Golden Bears are 8-16 vs spread in last 24 games as a home underdog.

7) Chiefs are rolling at 5-0, but they lost twice to Pittsburgh LY. Roethlisberger is coming off one of the worst games of his career (5 INT’s vs Jaguars). Can Steelers bounce back here?

6) Last three Oklahoma-Texas games were all decided by 7 or less points, with Longhorns 4-0 vs spread in last four series games. Texas State Fair is the backdrop for this historic rivalry, with Sooners coming off a loss to Iowa State. when they were favored by 31 points.

5) It is Week 6 and Bills-Patriots-Jets are all tied atop AFC East, at 3-2. Buffalo has the week off, so winner of Patriot-Jet game is atop AFC East by himself. Jets won their last three games, but can their offense put up points against a struggling New England defense?

4) San Diego State is 6-0 and Boise State is in the rare situation of being a road underdog in a Mountain West game. Broncos are 37-18 vs spread in last 55 road games, but they were favored in vast majority of those games. Aztecs are 29-13-1 vs spread in their last 43 conference games.

3) Cleveland Browns passed on Deshaun Watson not once, but twice in LY’s draft; you think he remembers (undoubtedly, he does)? Texans scored 124 points in their last three games. Browns were held to 18 or less points in four of their five games.

2) Florida State is 1-6 for the first time since 1976, when I was a senior in HS and Bobby Bowden was in his first year as the Seminoles’ coach. FSU lost to Miami last week for the first time in eight years— can they win here and get their season jumpstarted?

1) Minnesota is 14-5 vs spread in its last 19 home games; they beat the Packers in Green Bay’s first visit to the Vikings’ new dome LY. Packers are playing their third dome game in six weeks to start the season; they’re 8-3 vs spread in their last 11 games.

T.J. Oshie had two goals and an assist, and Alex Ovechkin scored his ninth of the season and set up Backstrom's power-play tally to help Washington hand New Jersey its first loss in four games.

Jacub Vrana also scored for the Capitals, and Braden Holtby had 21 saves. Washington is 8-0-1 in its last nine games against New Jersey.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

More NFL trends for Week 6 games this weekend:

— Minnesota is 14-5 vs spread in its last 19 home games.

— Saints are 6-1-1 vs spread in their last eight post-bye games.

— Redskins are 2-7 vs spread in their last nine post-bye games.

— Patriots are 2-7 in last nine games as a divisional road favorite.

— Buccaneers are 6-2 in last eight games as a road un

— Chargers are 13-3-4 vs spread as a divisional road underdog.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

13) Back in the late 60’s/early 70’s, the great basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian said this:

“The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky, that they’re going to put Western Kentucky on probation”

Well, North Carolina got off with a slap on the wrist from the NCAA Friday, after wide-spread academic fraud was uncovered at UNC:

“While student-athletes likely benefited from the so-called ‘paper courses’ offered by North Carolina, the information available in the record did not establish that the courses were solely created, offered and maintained as an orchestrated effort to benefit student-athletes.”
Greg Sankey, the panel’s chief hearing officer.

That means one thing: Western Carolina, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina? They best be careful, because the NCAA is mad again, but they’re not gonna punish one of their fat cat teams.

12) Syracuse (+24) 27, Clemson 24– Clemson’s QB got hurt, didn’t play the second half; they missed two FG’s- their regular kicker got hurt in practice couple weeks ago. Tigers never led in this game. Big win for Dino Babers and the Orangemen.

11) Ezekiel Elliott’s 6-game suspension was upheld; Cowboys have their bye this week— will the suspension start in Week 7?

10) Brooklyn Nets’ coach Kenny Atkinson has seven brothers; imagine growing up in a house with eight boys in it? You couldn’t help but be a tough kid.

9) If you don’t think poaching is rampant in college basketball, consider this: There are 18 Division I college basketball transfers who are eligible this season, who scored 15+ points/game in their last stop. Kids who score 15+ a game aren’t transferring because they’re unhappy with their playing time.

8) Turns out that Roger Goodell’s wife had a secret Twitter account where she defended her husband against some of his detractors, which is pretty cool. Jane Skinner Goodell used to be an anchor on Fox News Channel; she has been married to Goodell for 20 years.

7) Random trivia: Bill Sharman played for the Boston Celtics in the 50’s; he was backcourt-mate with the great Bob Cousy. Sharman’s career free-throw %age: 88.3%; that is 13th on the all-time NBA list for FT %age.

Sharman also coached for 10 years in the NBA/ABA, going 466-353 in a 10-year career; in fact, he won the 1971 ABA title with the Utah Stars (Zelmo Beaty, Willie Wise, Ron Boone), then got the Lakers’ job the next year and won the 1972 NBA title (Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West).

Sharman also played minor league baseball, he played OF/3B, hitting .292 in 133 minor league games from 1950-55. He was called up to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1951, but never got into a game.

6) 76ers’ coach Brett Brown has a 75-253 record in four years in Philly, but expectations are a lot higher this season, with the Sixers having so many good young players acquired thru the draft. Philly’s over/under win total in Las Vegas this season: 42.5. In other words, the 76ers are expected to make the playoffs this season.

Some umpiring facts to stash away for next season:
5) Over last three years, underdogs are 50-45 in Ted Barrett games; thats a strong trend.

4) Last four years, home underdogs are 7-24 when Conroy is behind the plate.

3) Last two years, under is 40-18 when Barksdale is umping the plate.

2) Thursday night, the Cubs had four baserunners in a row reach base with this sequence: Intentional walk, strikeout/passed ball, catcher’s interference and a hit-by-pitch.

Big rally, huh?

Well, in the HISTORY OF BASEBALL, this was only the 6th time ever a team had all four of those things happen in the same game, the FIRST TIME EVER in the same inning.

1) What is going on with guys managing in the baseball playoffs? Starting pitchers come in the game at any time now, everyone manages like they’re guessing. Cubs left Wade Davis in the game Thursday until he had thrown 44 pitches, 10 more than he had thrown in any game this season. Like Joe Maddon looked around and realized he didn’t have anyone else left.
