Kovelchuk signs

Well i really thought he was going to the KHL, but just read on espn that he signed with the devils. So......the most exciting signing of the off season is done, haha. Lets get to hockey season already !!!!

These contracts are insane, I really hope we get another Dipietro scenario, especially for New Jersey. I really thought Lou was smarter then this and if its really 17 years, he has lost his mind.

wow... i really hoped he'd sign with the kings if they could match the offer of the devils... looks like it would have been this way, but the devil made an offer that NO other team would/could have matched.

if it's 17 years it's quite insane... or dumb?

but as much as i dislike the devils i got to admit - sick roster they got now.

you don't want to give up too many power play opportunities to that team now.

The salary cap is now officially a joke.

Devils win % before Kovalchuk trade: .655
Devils win % after Kovalchuk trade: .574

Devils power play before Kovalchuk trade: 19.0%
Devils power play after Kovalchuk trade: 18.0%

Adding him last year didn't result in any kind of tangible improvement, and they stuck to their recent script of disappointing early playoff exits.

I read the details on the contract, during the last 9 or so years he makes only 2.5 mil per year, or something like that, but during the prime of the contract he makes close to 12 mil a yr. He is def not worth that much, especially on a defensive style hockey team.

Basically. The NHL needs to figure out something to stop these types of contracts that circumvent the cap.

But it isn't like this is the first signing to circumvent the cap either (see Luongo).

But the cap hit is only 6 mil a season (which is what most teams really care about). A Kovalchuk player at only a cap hit of 6 mil a season? That's pretty good.

I was hoping the league would do something about the contract & to my amazement they did. I wonder how they will re-structure it OR will be say enough is enough & bolt to Russia?

Good move by the NHL, this was obviously a sham from the get-go.

Love it !!!! I think he is gonna restructure to make it work. If he was gonna go to the KHL he would have never signed with NJ.
