The Pittsburgh Penguins are ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations in all of professional sports, according to the 2010 "Ultimate Standings" compiled by ESPN The Magazine.
The publication rates all 122 teams in the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB in eight different categories - Fan Relations, Bang for the Buck, Ownership, Affordability, Stadium Experience, Players, Coaching and Title Track. The standings were assembled via research and fan feedback. ESPN describes the Fan Relations category as "Openness and consideration toward fans by players, coaches and management." In the overall "Ultimate Standings," the Penguins were ranked No. 1 in the NHL and No. 5 among all 122 teams in the four leagues. "It's gratifying to be honored in this way, especially because the fans are the most important part of the Penguins organization, and outstanding fan relations is what we strive for," team president David Morehouse said. "This is a tribute to the type of people we have working here, from the players and coaches to the people who answer the phones, sell the tickets and show you to your seats. And we've said all along we have the greatest fans in professional sports."

Glad the NHL let them still have a team.Pretty sure they were moving a few years ago due to lack of support. But swetqueef and his 50 unit bets saved the team.

We knew Penguins general manager Ray Shero was good at his job long before his terrific signings of free-agent defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek Thursday. The team's run to the Stanley Cup final in 2008 and its Cup win in '09 are pretty good proof. But we didn't find out just how great Shero is until after the Chicago Blackhawks won the Cup this spring. The champagne wasn't even dry in Chicago when the Blackhawks traded key players Dustin Byfuglien, Kris Versteeg, Andrew Ladd, Colin Fraser, Ben Eager and Brent Sopel because of NHL salary-cap concerns.
Contrast that to the Penguins who have Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, Martin, Michalek and Marc-Andre Fleury signed through at least the 2012-13 season. It will be disappointing if they don't win at least one more Cup during that time. No wonder Shero said Friday morning after doing five-year deals with Martin and Michalek for a total of $45 million: "I slept good last night."

Sources indicate that 12.27.10 - the 10-year anniversary of Mario Lemieux's comeback - will be the day the Penguins and Consol Energy Center unveil a statue of Lemieux outside the building. This will be just five days before the Winter Classic at Heinz Field and part of a week-long hockey extravaganza for the city.
The statue will reportedly depict Lemieux, with the puck, beating a defenseman. No word if the defenseman in question will be Ray Bourque, the Hall-of-Fame blueliner so frequently victimized by Mario throughout their careers. But it should be. Mario sure made Bourque look like a statue back then.
