Draft Strategy ' The Phillip Rivers...
Hi everyone, nice to see the familiar faces here!
![]() I am excited about the NFL season and am ready to get back to my fantasy sports. As some of you know (Joe) steelcityplayers and I got married in the spring and there is not much computer time for either of us...well mainly me! I have had a great season doing the Landscape Design work but am ready to do a bit of wagering and have some fun for the fall season. Like many of you here at CappersMall, i have been busy racking my brains analyzing cheat sheets and going through endless mock drafts, in the hopes of producing my 2011 -2012 champion fantasy team. These leagues are 12 team leagues as are the examples below. This is nice strategy that has been working for me if i am fortunate to be drafting in the first 5 positions (after that it’s hit or miss and the plan generally fails.) I am still getting a quality team when this happens its just that the Quarterback/ Wide Receiver tandem is lost. I like to call this the Phillip Rivers Strategy and I hope that it can help you with your draft. Give it a try and let me know if it is successful for you. Remember that I developed this strategy because I whole-heartedly believe that Vincent Jackson is going to be the best Fantasy Football Wide Receiver this year. Well, perhaps one of the best. The players are somewhat interchangeable based on who you feel will be the best tandem. Because people are grabbing up Aaron Rodgers and Michael Vick in the first round as I mentioned earlier, the Rodgers/ Jennings and Vick/ Desean Jackson tandem doesn’t work. Phillip Rivers is generally there in round #3 if you are drafting 5th or better. You may try to get a nice Quarterback/ Wide Receiver tandem based on who you think is going to perform this season. Here are a few examples in no particular order that you might wish to test in a mock draft: Matt Ryan/ Roddy White Matt Schaub/ A. Johnson Kevin Kolb/ Larry Fitgerald Peyton Manning/ Reggie Wayne Matt Cassel/ Dwayne Bowe Stafford/ C. Johnson Romo/ Austin Freeman/ Mike Williams Roethlisberger/ Wallace Drew Brees/ Colston Romo/ Austin Eli Manning/ Hakeem Nicks The Phillip Rivers Strategy: In the first round we are planning on selecting a star, top tier Running Back, the best one available. In round #2 we look past the few Wide Receivers available that are generally ranked slightly higher, and select Vincent Jackson of the San Diego Chargers. Normally in the mock drafts that I have been doing there are a few guys using their #1 pick on QB Aaron Rodgers or QB Michael Vick. I think this a bad idea but it helps me out when round #5 comes around and there are few nice Running Backs left to compliment my first round Running Back. Round #3 selection is Phillip Rivers. That is a hell of nice first three picks in my opinion! Next in round #4 if available, I grab Antonio Gates (the best Tight End in the league) and of course another target for my starting Quarterback, Phillip Rivers. He is there in the 4th round most of the time. I then complete my roster by drafting the best available Wide Receivers and Running Backs ( until I am maxed out) then my Defensive Starting Team followed by my Kicker. I am going to post a few Draft outcomes so that you can see this strategy is producing some real nice teams. This team is pretty bad-ass in my opinion: Phillip Rivers QB 3 23 323.4 Peyton Hillis RB 5 53 166.4 Ray Rice RB 1 5 211 Pierre Garcon WR 6 68 124.2 Vincent Jackson WR 2 20 170.4 Hines Ward WR 7 77 106.2 Antonio Gates TE 4 44 158.2 Rob Bironas K 14 164 115.4 Dolphins DST 13 149 153.9 Daniel Thomas RB 8 92 133 LaDainian Tomlinson RB 12 140 94.8 Ryan Torain RB 11 125 92.8 Lee Evans WR 10 116 97.8 Mike Thomas WR 9 101 96.6 .................................................. ............................................ In this example Antonio Gates was gone but its a nice team: Player Position Round Drafted Overall Pick Projected Fantasy Points Philip Rivers QB 3 23 323.4 Arian Foster RB 1 3 240 Peyton Hillis RB 5 43 168.6 Austin Collie WR 8 78 121.2 Marques Colston WR 4 38 141.8 Vincent Jackson WR 2 18 166.2 Tony Gonzalez TE 11 103 99.8 Matt Bryant K 12 118 128.4 Chargers DST 10 98 155.1 Jay Cutler QB 13 123 257.2 Jahvid Best RB 6 58 138.6 BenJarvus Green-Ellis RB 7 63 138.8 Tim Hightower RB 9 83 89.4 A.J. Green WR 14 138 97.4 .................................................. ............................................. In this Draft you can see that I drafted Ray Rice and Vincent Jackson with my first two selections. Unfortunately however Rivers went just before my 3rd pick (which happens sometimes) so i had to take Peyton Manning which worked out well as I was able to get Garcon later on. Player Position Round Drafted Overall Pick Projected Fantasy Points Peyton Manning QB 3 29 345 Peyton Hillis RB 5 53 166.4 Ray Rice RB 1 5 211 Pierre Garcon WR 6 68 124.2 Vincent Jackson WR 2 20 170.4 Hines Ward WR 7 77 106.2 Antonio Gates TE 4 44 158.2 Rob Bironas K 14 164 115.4 Dolphins DST 13 149 153.9 Daniel Thomas RB 8 92 133 LaDainian Tomlinson RB 12 140 94.8 Ryan Torain RB 11 125 92.8 Lee Evans WR 10 116 97.8 Mike Thomas WR 9 101 96.6 .................................................. ...............................................

congrats on the marriage BC.
In my 6 point passing TD league, Rivers will never make it to round 3. In my league, he'll go early-mid second round. I do like the idea of the TD combo, as it is gold when it hits. But, the flip-side is that if your team (in this case SD) has a lousy game, it will be almost impossible for you to win your match-up for that week.

Who are you? Seal? Seth: Fogell, this ID says that you're 25 years old. Why wouldn't you just put 21, man? Fogell: Seth, Seth, Seth. Listen up, ass-face: every day, hundreds of kids go into the liquor store with fake IDs, and every single one says they're 21. Pssh, how many 21 year olds do you think there are in this town? It's called f*cking strategy, alright? |

Thanks Ricky Tan & Keith.
These drafts that i used for examples are in fact 6 point td leagues. Sometimes Rivers is there as you can see but i understand they are simply mock drafts with people trying various strategies of their own. Sometimes i have to take Romo or P. Manning but that isnt such a bad thing as you point out because i am loading up on Chargers. I am hopeful to get what i want in one of my real drafts so i guess i will have to wait and see? I am high on VJAX though!

Congrats on the marriage bc wish i would have known would have crashed the reception lol. I like the tandem idea I usually try to get the TE and QB though. Think a Rivers and Gates tandem would work as I could get Rivers but Vinny would be gone right after or before him.
