The paint is barely dry on the exciting British Open win by Darren Clarke and the odds are already out for the final major of the year, the PGA Championship.
The PGA Championship will begin Thursday, August 11 from the Atlanta Athletic Club in Georgia. It’s the third time it’s been held at this location, the most recent coming in 2001.
Rory McIlroy (+715) is the favorite. The 22-year-old fell short in the British Open after winning the U.S. Open by eight strokes. He finished tied-for-25th at the British after final two rounds of 74 and 73.
Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood are both second at +1015. Both of these guys should have more major wins, although ‘lefty’ does have four (including the 2005 PGA Championship), while Westwood is still shut out.
Mickelson finished tied-for-second (-2) at the British Open along with Dustin Johnson. He had his chances to beat Clarke, but missed some makeable puts once again. Westwood missed the cut at the British after finishing in the top-3 the last two years.
Luke Donald (+1215) also missed the cut at the British. The world’s No.1 player is still looking for his first major.
The elephant in the room is Tiger Woods (+1615 odds). He sat out the last two majors with knee and Achilles injuries. It’s not even definite he’ll play in this event.
Martin Kaymer (+1615) is tied with Woods. The German won the PGA Championship last year and finished tied-for-12th (+3) at the British Open.
Note that Clarke is still listed as a huge long shot (+6050) after winning the first major of his career at age 42.
