The British Open begins Thursday from Royal St. George's in Sandwich, England and there is plenty of intrigue even without injured American Tiger Woods. Golf betting fans have already started discussing the British Open and other golf betting.
Rory McIlroy (+600) just turned 22-years-old in March, but is already being compared to a young Woods. That’s because he just won the U.S. Open by eight strokes, shaking off a disastrous final round of the Masters. It’s a little surprising he isn’t more heavily favored.
Lee Westwood (+750) is considered the best current golfer to never win a major. He has finished in the top-3 in five of his last seven majors played, including a second and third in this event. Can he finally get over the hump this week?
Luke Donald (+850) is the No. 1 player in the World Golf Rankings. He just won the Barclays Scottish Open for his third win of the season. He has never won a major with his best finish at the British Open a tie-for-5th in 2009. He was tied-for-11th last season.
Martin Kaymer (+950) is third in the World Rankings. He won the PGA Championship last year and was tied-for-seventh in the British Open.
The major-less Sergio Garcia (+1000) is considered a career underachiever, but he’s been playing better of late, although still hasn’t won a tournament since 2008.
Graeme McDowell (+1100) won the 2010 US Open, but has never cracked the top-10 in this event.
Nick Watney (+1250) is the favored American, followed by Steve Stricker (+1350) and Phil Mickelson (+1500). Mickelson has been awful at the British Open, only finishing in the top-20 once in the last six years.
