Blue Jays, Orioles wrap up basement battle

The Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles have been locked in a fierce midweek series, attempting to stay out of the American League East basement. The two meet on Thursday afternoon at Oriole Park to conclude this four-game set between a pair of divisional rivals.

Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles – 12:35 PM ET

Roy Halladay (11-7, 2.89) did not have a very good start to the second half, taking the loss as the Blue Jays fell 6-4 at Tampa Bay. The Cy Young candidate went six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, along with six strikeouts and three walks. This was Halladay's worst start in almost a month as he carried a three-game winning streak into the All-Star Game, where he was making his fifth appearance.”Doc” claimed a win in his first meeting with the Orioles, scattering four runs on eight hits over 7 2/3 innings as the Blue Jays edged Baltimore 5-4 at home, adding seven strikeouts.

Daniel Cabrera (6-5, 4.57) has not won in his last three outings, with a pair of no-decisions and a loss in that time. One of those no-decisions came in an 11-10 extra-inning win at home over Detroit, in which Cabrera was tagged for seven runs (six earned) on five hits, including a pair of homers, in five innings of work. Cabrera also walked five batters and struck out four, making the fourth time in ten starts that he has more walks than strikeouts, and he now leads the American League in walks as well. The 27-year-old righthander's first no-decision during this recent run was during a 7-6 loss in Toronto, when he allowed four runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings.

These two split the first two games of this series, with Baltimore taking the opener 8-3, while the Blue Jays replied with a 10-8 victory. It is rare that Halladay has two bad outings in a row, and Cabrera has been fortunate to still have a perfect 3-0 record in eight starts at home with an ERA of 5.22.
