Calculate Batting Average

When you go through the stats for batters in MLB betting action, you quite often look at numbers like home runs, RBIs, runs scored, or the new fad, OPS. However, the bottom line with batters is how often do you get hits. That's what goes into calculating someone's batting average.

Calculating batting average is simple. You take the total number of hits, regardless of whether those hits are singles, doubles, triples, or home runs, and divide it by the number of at bats that the player has. The tricky part is that we are talking about at bats, not plate appearances. Walks, hit by pitches, and sacrifices aren't considered at bats. The only things that count are made outs and hits. It's something that should be factored in when preparing for your MLB fantasy baseball season.

So, if you have a player that has 35 hits in 120 at bats over the course of the first couple months of the season, you take those 35 hits and divide them by 120 at bats. Calculators are perfect for this because they already put the average in decimal form. In this example, this player would have a .292 batting average. Batting averages are always calculated out to three digits, so be sure to round off that third number!

Now that you've got the trick to tallying up batting averages, be sure to use this on the fly to keep track of your favorite players and how they're doing in MLB betting action!
