Arizona Diamondbacks (94-68) at Milwaukee Brewers (96-66), 2:07 p.m.
Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Ian Kennedy (21-4, 2.88) Milwaukee - Yovani Gallardo (17-10, 3.52)
Getting the ball for the Diamondbacks in Game 1 will be the 26-year-old Kennedy, who enjoyed a breakout campaign that saw him go 21-4 with a 2.88 ERA. He ended the year strong winning 13 of his final 14 decisions, including his last six, but this will be his first taste of postseason action.
Kennedy tossed seven scoreless to beat the Brewers earlier in the year and is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in three starts against them.
Milwaukee, back in the postseason for the first time since 2007 and only the fourth time in team history, will open the series with right-hander Yovani Gallardo, who led the team in wins (17) and strikeouts (207) while working 207 1/3 innings, and pitched the team's only complete game.
Over his final three regular-season starts Gallardo pitched to a 1.77 ERA and struck out 36 batters over 20 1/3 frames.
The Mexican hurler has also dominated the Dimaondbacks over the course of his career, going a perfect 5-0 in five starts against them, while pitching to a splendid 1.20 ERA.
Arizona won four of its seven meetings with the Diamondbacks this past season.
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (90-72) AT PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (102-60), 5:07 P.M
Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Kyle Lohse (14-8, 3.39) Philadelphia - Roy Halladay (19-6, 2.35)
Roy Halladay opened last year's postseason with a no- hitter, but his year ultimately ended in disappointment. He's hoping for a different ending this time around.
Halladay produced yet another terrific season, as he went 19-6 with a 2.35 ERA, ranking first in the NL in complete games (eight) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.29), was second in ERA and innings (223 2/3), third in wins and strikeouts (220), and fourth in WHIP (1.04).
St. Louis enters the postseason a bit banged up, as shortstop Rafael Furcal (hamstring) and outfielder Matt Holliday (hand) are both nursing injuries. The Cards, though, are still led by three-time MVP Albert Pujols (.299, 37 HR, 99 RBI) and the resurgent Lance Berkman (.301, 31 HR, 94 RBI).
Hoping to match Halladay tonight will be righty Kyle Lohse, who was 14-8 with a 3.39 ERA, 111 strikeouts and 42 walks in 188 1/3 innings this season. Lohse made 30 starts for the first time since 2008 and ended his year strong, winning six of his final seven decisions and outdueled Halladay in Philadelphia on September 19. He gave up just an unearned un over 7 1/3 innings in that one.
He is just 3-4 lifetime versus Philadelphia with a 3.43 ERA in 10 starts.
St. Louis won six of its nine meetings with the Phillies this season, including three of the four matchups in Philadelphia. Read more...
Tampa Bay Rays (1-0) at Texas Rangers (0-1), 7:07 p.m.
Probable Starting Pitchers: Tampa Bay - James Shields (16-12, 2.82) Texas - Derek Holland (16-5, 3.95)
James Shields tries to send the Tampa Bay Rays home with a commanding lead in the American League Division Series this evening when they play Game 2 against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
The Rays drew first blood in the best-of-five set on Friday, as rookie left- hander Matt Moore threw seven scoreless innings in his second major league start and Kelly Shoppach hit two home runs, leading Tampa to a 9-0 win.
Shields, who was one of the best pitchers in the American League this season, going 16-12 with a 2.82 ERA. His 11 complete games were by far the most in the AL and he has a reputation of coming up big when the Rays need him, but lost his ALDS start to the Rangers last year.
Shields went 2-0 with a sparking 0.53 ERA in two starts against Texas this season.
The Rangers, meanwhile, will rely on lefty Derek Holland, who tied Shields with four shutouts this season and ended the year 16-5 with a 3.95 ERA. He also won his last three starts and hasn't lost since August 21.
However, he recorded quality starts in just 19 of his 32 starts this season.
"I mean, I've read a lot about [my struggles]," Holland said. "It was definitely a roller coaster. I had my bumps and bruises. The main thing is it's not how you start, it's how you finish, and I feel that I finished pretty well."
Texas won five of its nine regular season meetings with the Rays, taking two of three in Arlington, while splitting six games at Tropicana Field.
Game 3 of this series will shift to Tropicana Field on Monday. Read more....
