The Florida Marlins have been relegated to third place in the National League East, forced to watch the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies battle for the top spot. But the Marlins can play spoiler on Saturday at Dolphin Stadium when they clash with the Mets, who are looking to boost their World Series odds.
Mike Pelfrey (13-8, 3.70) is coming off his second consecutive complete-game effort, as he scattered a run on six hits to lead the Mets to a 9-1 rout of Houston at home. Pelfrey also struck out six without walking a single batter, and he has been on a roll over his last ten starts, winning seven and losing only twice. His durability is also a bonus for the Mets, whose bullpen has been terrible recently. However, the 24-year-old has struggled against the Marlins this season, losing all three of his starts with an outlandish ERA of 10.66.
Ricky Nolasco (13-7. 3.62) posted his third double-digit strikeout game in five outings in a 5-2 win at Arizona, fanning ten as he allowed a pair of runs on three hits over 7 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old righthander has become the undisputed ace of the Florida staff after missing most of last season with an elbow injury, and he appears to be on his way to fulfilling his vast potential. Nolasco has made four appearances, including three starts, against the Mets this season, recording a 1-1 mark with an ERA of 3.48.
Heading into Friday's series opener, the Mets had won seven of 12 over the Marlins in 2008, but they were only 2-4 in Florida. This is a match-up of two young guns who are hot right now, meaning it could be a long night for the opposing offenses. Coming off a tough series with the Phillies, the Mets could be a bit vulnerable right now. This pitching match-up is definitely one to watch for on Saturday night.
