Super Bowl XLVI props are almost as fun as the game itself, maybe even more. Here’s a look at some of the hundreds available. And for even more Super Bowl talk, visit the Betting Blog by a Betting Man or follow cappersmall on twitter!
The three big favorites are Tom Brady (+100), Eli Manning (+210) and Rob Gronkowski (+450). There’s a big drop-off from there with Victor Cruz (+1400), Hakeem Nicks (+1400), Aaron Hernandez (+1500) and Wes Welker (+1500).
It’s not surprising in the least that Brady and Manning are the favorites. After all, a quarterback has won this award four of the last five years, with Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers the winner last season. Eli Manning won four years ago in the dramatic upset of the Patriots. Brady has been the recipient two times and receiver Deion Branch got it during New England’s third title.
A tight end like Gronkowski has never won this award. Receivers have had success with Santonio Holmes in the 2008 season, Hines Ward in 2005 and Branch in 2004. The Patriots have a far worse secondary than the Giants and even have trouble stopping mediocre offenses. New England will try to take away the deep ball with Nicks, but that’s going to leave lots of room for Cruz in the middle.
The leading running back odds have Ahmad Bradshaw and BenJarvus Green-Ellis both at +2500. A running back hasn’t won since Denver’s Terrell Davis in the 1997 season. A back is unlikely to win this year with an emphasis on the pass. Finally, there are a number of defensive players, all at +5000 odds. The last defensive Super Bowl MVP was Tampa Bay’s Dexter Jackson in the 2002 season.
This is consistently one of the most intriguing props in addition to Super Bowl MVP. Gronkowski (11/2) is the leader in this category as he set a tight end record with 17 touchdowns during the regular season. He then added three more against Denver in the first playoff round for good measure, before getting shut out versus Baltimore.
There are five players tied next for this prop at 15/2. They are Green-Ellis, Hernandez, Cruz and Welker. These odds certainly favor New England scoring the first touchdown. I’m not as sure about that, but I love Green-Ellis to score the first TD if they do. The Giants will be playing a lot of dime coverage, daring the Pats to run, and coach Bill Belichick will take whatever the defense gives him.
Looking at the Giants, Bradshaw and Cruz each led the team in touchdowns during the regular season at nine. Bradshaw has none during their three playoff games with Nicks leading the way with four and Mario Manningham (another receiver) adding three more.
Will Tom Brady throw an interception? – Bookmaker.eu
The answer ‘Yes’ pays -145 and ‘No’ pays +115. This prop is very bad news for New England because they can’t afford even one interception. Brady has vowed to play ‘much better’ than he did in the AFC title game against Baltimore when he had two picks and could have easily had more.
Brady needs to play a great game for the Pats to win and he’ll be facing a strong pass rush from the Giants front four. Brady is human and does make mistakes when he is pressured and I think he’ll have exactly one pick.
Rob Gronkowski – Over /Under 82 ½ receiving yards – Bovada.lv
There is some juice for this prop with the ‘over’ -125 and the ‘under’ -105.
This is an extremely important prop bet because of Gronkowski’s health status. He suffered what appeared to be a nasty ankle injury against the Ravens. He has missed practice and will likely be getting treatment up until game-time. The man they call ‘Gronk’ is key to New England’s two tight end attack and it will be a big blow if he’s less than 100 percent, which I think he will be.
This is the best way to get a bigger payout when you feel much stronger about one of the teams. For example, a lot of the pundits think the Giants are the better team and should be slight favorites.
The Giants with a -3 ½ pointspread pays +195. A -7 ½ spread pays +350. A lot of G-Men fans are taking advantage of this prop and it’s not surprising.
Madonna’s hair color during halftime – Bovada.lv
The odds are Blonde (-400) and any other color (+250). This article would be meaningless if at least one entertainment prop wasn’t mentioned. There are lots of these types available.
I can’t even pretend to be an expert on Madonna’s hair styling choices. However, this looks like a good underdog pick.
