2010 Kansas City Chiefs Preview
2009 was yet another disappointing year for the Kansas City Chiefs. This franchise has fallen upon awful times in recent years, and they will probably be in store for yet another lengthy campaign in the 2010 NFL betting season.
When GM Scott Pioli came to town, one of his first orders of business was bringing in a quarterback. QB Matt Cassel was his man of choice to bring to KC from his days in New England, but that might turn out to be a big mistake. Last year was a woeful one for Kansas City's signal caller, as he only threw for 2,924 yards, 16 TDs, and 16 INTs. He didn't have a single receiver have more than the 608 yards of WR Chris Chambers, and things don't look much more promising this year.
The rushing game will be the strength of this team. Last year's hero down the stretch was RB Jamaal Charles, who erased the memories of Larry Johnson by rushing for the most yards in the league over the second half of the season. KC had the 11th best rushing attack in the game last year at 120.6 YPG, and that should only go up with the addition of RB Thomas Jones.
Picking up SS Eric Berry in the first round of the NFL Draft was the right move for the franchise. The Chiefs gave up 26.5 points and 388.2 yards per game, which ranked 29th and 30th respectively in the league. Still, there are a tons of pieces to the puzzle that are missing on this 'D' and HC Todd Haley knows it. There are probably only 3-4 legitimate NFL level starters on this team, but Berry should at least remotely make things more intriguing for KC fans this year.
The Chiefs aren't getting a heck of a lot closer towards contending for the Super Bowl as of yet. Barring Cassel waking up the echoes from his 2008 campaign with the Patriots, this is going to be an awfully long year for Kansas City, as another Top 5 pick in the NFL Draft seems like a legitimate probability.
