NHL Gameday Saturday - Pens look to even things against Red Wings
The Pittsburgh Penguins played like a desperate team in Game 3, and it resulted in a critical victory. The Penguins will aim to build on that momentum when they host the Detroit Red Wings at Mellon Arena on Saturday night in Game 4, trailing 2-1 in the Stanley Cup finals.
Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins – 8:00 PM ET
The Red Wings could not keep up with the energy of the young Penguins in Game 3's 3-2 loss, despite a 34-24 edge in shots on goal. Johan Franzen scored his NHL-leading 13th goal of the postseason for the Red Wings, who may have suffered even more than a loss as Tomas Holmstrom was injured late in the game and could be forced to miss Game 4. Holmstrom is known for his ability to create traffic in front of the opposing goaltender, and his skill will be sorely missed, especially on the power play. Chris Osgood stopped 21 shots for the Red Wings.
Sidney Crosby put this team on his back during this game, and his teammates followed the example of their captain. Crosby potted a pair of goals to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead, and the Penguins chased the Red Wings all over the ice, hitting them at every chance. Adam Hall added some insurance for the Penguins, who were a completely different team than the one that got shut out during two games in Detroit. Marc-Andre Fleury was much better, making 32 saves for the Penguins.
Pittsburgh are -120 home favorites in this contest, and the last thing the Penguins want to do is to go back to Detroit down 3-1. The loss of Holmstrom could be huge for the Red Wings as his linemates, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, are having trouble find the net as it is. Look for another inspired effort from the Penguins as Pittsburgh will knot the series at two games apiece with a stirring win on Saturday.
