A little late to the discussion but we have people fighting every year over this topic. I'm on the side that if you decide to start guys on byes to keep from having to drop someone, it's part of their basic strategy trying to win the league. Some don't like it. Some totally agree with it. The rule is that you're allowed to do it so we stick by it until we can discuss it the nesxt season. Our league is a little different.. 16 teams, 14 player roster so only 5 bench positions. Keeps people from hoarding players and keeps things active all season. But everyone is faced with the decision to drop or keep a player to maintain a full starting lineup at some point so everyone can make that philosophical decision for themselves at some point. Honestly, like the NFL, less rules is better. Our basic rules are honest effort for the full season and pay up.. otherwise you get the boot. For the original poster, I'd have gone with the rules agreed upon. After all, you did all agree and shake on it..
