Great topic...

not sure how Knute Rockne rates in as a player...

I do not know crap about Hockey, Soccer, or long distance running...

However, Team sports kind of eliminates it unless you just name the team

so I will keep my list for sports that I follow and for the most part that a single player can dominate..

Tiger

Sugar Ray Leonard

Serena Williams

Usain Bolt

agree with Bob's list, except I would put Joe Montana in there over Brady.

This is very difficult, what I'm trying to do is pick someone from a sport where the gap between that athlete and the second best in that sport is as wide as possible. For example, everyone is picking Michael Jordan, but imo the gap between him and LeBron isn't that wide, the same with Brady and whoever the second best football player is. so for right now there are only two athletes I can think of who imo are clearly head and shoulders above the second best athlete in their particular sport. I'll have to do some more thinking before filling my other two spots.

Serena Williams
Wayne Gretzky

The gap between Serena and Martina or even Steffi Graf is not that big so I think you're down to 1. I would say Michael Phelps fits your criteria.

when I look at these type of choices I try to take away the teams/ players they played with and or for. Put this guy with that team and so on . with that in mind the first guy that comes to me is
Barry Sanders and John Elway . tough choice but based on how many years I will go with John Elway .. Put him on better teams and he could easily have multiple rings .

basketball you have to go with Wilt Chamberlain . Dominant. If he was a Celtic instead of Russell it would be a total no brainer . And I am a Celtic fan.

baseball is hard . its not just about hitting imho to be the greatest . hit, run, field and throw . Although I love the Mick.. Its Willie Mays .

and yes Tiger is better than Jack overall just because of the better competition .
spitz in swimming. Bolt in track
gable in wrestling, although Cael Sanderson is right there.

so all in all the final four is

Elway
Chamberlain
Mays
Woods

Agree with most of your points 2B but Brady has done more with less talent around him than Elway had with him. Skills wise Elway wins but as far as production with surrounding talent Brady gets my vote. The other one that seems a little off is rating Spitz above Phelps. Numbers like world records and Olympic gold medals would say different.

I agree mark. Nobody has done more with less around him than Brady. He may have played his whole career with maybe 1 HOF player on offense (Gronk?). You could say Randy Moss but he was there for what, 1 1/2 seasons?

And i may be a Patriots fan and all but NO PLAYER in any of the 4 major team sports has as many rings as the team in his sport with the most ... except Brady. No team in the NFL has more rings than Brady does. Fan or no fan, that is unmatched.

When you count dominance, stats, awards, championships and postseason numbers all together, I don't know how in any world you can leave any of these 3 off the list. Brady, Jordan, Gretzky. After that you can debate the 4th name with 50 different names in that slot.

I just don't see how you can possibly leave any of the top 3 off unless personal feelings or emotions are involved. The numbers, stats and titles just don't back you up in doing it.
