Slightly off topic. I don't know if any of you watch the Amazing Race but there is a family competing call the Weaver Family. Mr. Weaver died and his wife and kids are in the race. Apparantly he had racing ties and died in an accident at Daytona.

Daytona track cited, fined in worker's death

By LUDMILLA LELIS
The Orlando Sentinel
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Federal labor officials cited the Daytona International Speedway Friday for failing to enforce safety procedures that could have prevented the February death of a track worker during a stock-car race.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued $11,175 in proposed fines, including a $6,300 penalty for the alleged violation that contributed to the death of track-crew supervisor Roy H. Weaver III on Feb. 8. The other $4,875 in penalties stem from other potential work hazards, including hearing loss, that federal investigators found during inspections at the track, but were not related to the accident.

Weaver, 44, of Ormond Beach, Fla., was struck and killed by a race car during the IPOWERacing 150 while he was removing debris from the track. Several racing officials said at the time of the crash that the fact that the driver involved, Ray Paprota, is a paraplegic was not a factor in the accident.

James Borders, area director of the Jacksonville office for OSHA, said a fine against a racing venue for a worker's death is rare.

The citations against the Speedway are ranked as "serious," meaning that Speedway officials knew or should have known about the potential dangers to its employees. The maximum penalty for a serious citation is $7,000. Borders said the penalty for Weaver's death was adjusted because OSHA had not inspected the track before and had no prior history with the Speedway.

OSHA, which is part of the U.S. Labor Department, has issued larger fines in the past-up to $70,000 for a workplace fatality in cases when an investigation found a company had willfully disregarded safety standards.

Speedway spokesman David Talley didn't comment on the federal investigation Friday. "Until our legal team has had a chance to read the report, we will not comment," Talley said.

The Speedway has 15 days to pay the fines, have a meeting with OSHA officials, or appeal the citation to OSHA's review commission.

Officials with IPOWERacing, the racing body that sanctioned the Feb. 8 event, also declined comment, saying they had not had a chance to read the federal report.

Weaver's family couldn't be reached for comment on Friday.

Who's HOT at Lowe's

Jimmie Johnson has won the last three races and has finished seventh or better since 2002 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon are tied with Johnson with four victories at LMS - the most among active drivers.

Carl Edwards finished third in his first start at LMS in May.

Tony Stewart, who won this event in 2003, has the second-best finishing average (10.2) among all drivers that have started the last 10 events at LMS.

Ryan Newman has been hot in qualifying at LMS, capturing four of the last five poles, but has yet to win at the track. His best finish of third came in this event in 2003.

Jamie McMurray won his first NEXTEL Cup race at LMS, in only his second career start, back on Oct. 13, 2002. Since then he has put together an average finish of 11.0 in six races.

Who's NOT

Scott Wimmer has finished 23rd or worse in his three starts at LMS.

Robby Gordon has never led a lap in 10 starts at LMS.

Who Else to Watch

Bobby Labonte finished second in the May event and has the best average finish (8.1) among all drivers that have entered every event since 1998.

Although he crashed out of the May race, Brian Vickers led the most laps in one race for the first time in his career in that event after he held the No. 25 out front for 98 laps.

Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch and Greg Biffle were among the fastest in testing last month at LMS.

Matt Kenseth, the 2000 Coca-Cola 600 winner, is coming off two top-five finishes at Talladega and Kansas. This weekend he will be in the same car that dominated at Chicago in July before finishing second.

Robert Yates teammates of Dale Jarrett and Elliott Sadler have combined for four top-10 finishes in the last six races at LMS.

Driver Handicaps & Chassis Info: Charlotte

1. Tony Stewart
Points: 5684
Avg. Start: 9.9
Avg. Finish: 10.7

In the 2003 fall race, Stewart led 149 laps en route to his first win at Lowe's Motor Speedway after overcoming a 7.9-second lead by Ryan Newman with 36 laps to go. Even though that was Stewart's only win at LMS, the driver of the No. 20 has captured six top-five and nine top-10 finishes in 13 races. Stewart tested last month at LMS and posted an unofficial speed of 186.935 mph before crashing for the second time in the two-day test. This weekend's chassis (No. 83) for the Home Depot team has made 14 starts, four this season, most recently finishing fourth at Kansas. This car has won three times, including Indianapolis this year.

Quotable: "Humpy (Wheeler, Lowe's Motor Speedway track president) did a really good job. None of us wanted him to change it in the first place. But with that, Humpy is not one of those guys who is just going to sit there and say well tough - that's what it is and deal with it. He has re-ground the rest of the track."

2. Ryan Newman
Points: 5609
Avg. Start: 2.1
Avg. Finish: 19.1

Newman holds the best average starting position (2.1) among all drivers at Lowe's Motor Speedway. In nine races, Newman has earned five poles, four top-10 finishes and has led 180 laps. He will race the same car (PRS-79) that finished 18th at California in September.

Quotable: "We've proven that we have a fast car at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The Alltel Dodge has been great every time we've gone to the track. We keep qualifying well, but just can't get that elusive win for Roger Penske."

3. Greg Biffle
Points: 5596
Avg. Start: 25.0
Avg. Finish: 18.6

Biffle captured his best finish of sixth, and first top 10, at Lowe's Motor Speedway in May. In his five previous starts, Biffle finished 16th or worse. Biffle, who wrecked two cars in testing at LMS, will drive the same car (chassis RK-275) that visited Victory Lane for the first time in 2005 at California in February. He also has one pole, two wins and seven top 10s in the Busch Series at LMS.

Quotable: "We tore up two cars in the test there, so we're going to have to be a little cautious all around. We'll keep a close eye on the tire wear and I may have to change my driving style a little to fit the new track surface."

4. Rusty Wallace
Points: 5594
Avg. Start: 16.5
Avg. Finish: 16.1

Wallace will race in his last possible points paying race at Lowe's Motor Speedway this weekend, which will mark his 48th start. He has won twice at the track, most recently on May 27, 1990, in a race where he led 306 laps. He captured his 22nd top-10 finish this past May at LMS. He also has eight top fives and has led 940 laps at the 1.5-mile speedway.

Quotable: "With D.J. (Dale Jarrett) winning two races ago at Talladega and Mark (Martin) taking the win at Kansas on Sunday, maybe there's some kind of trend going on for us older guys - uh, I mean us seasoned veterans – to be winning the races."

5. Jimmie Johnson
Points: 5592
Avg. Start: 9.3
Avg. Finish: 7.4

Johnson has finished in the top 10, with four wins, in seven of the eight races he's competed in at Lowe's Motor Speedway. His 2003 Coca-Cola 600 win came from the furthest starting position (37th), and since 2004 he has won every points race at LMS. His finishing average leads all active drivers that have entered eight or more races. Johnson, who has led 847 laps at Lowe's, will race chassis No. 48329 this weekend. This is the same car that Johnson won with at Dover last month. The No. 48 will carry a new paint scheme that will be a preview to next season's standard design. Johnson will be one of many pulling double duty this weekend in both the Busch and NEXTEL Cup Series.

Quotable: "Going to Charlotte, there is really only one direction for us to go and that's not winning. If that happens, so be it."

6. Carl Edwards
Points: 5589
Avg. Start: 12.0
Avg. Finish: 3.0

In his first start at Lowe's Motor Speedway this past May, Edwards started 12th, led 10 laps and finished third. The No. 99 team will bring back the same chassis (RK-320) that finished third last Sunday at Kansas. The car will carry the Scotts colors for the last time this season.

Quotable: "Charlotte's going to be a tough track. I'm not really sure what to expect but when you have guys like Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart wreck two cars each during the test, it makes me a little nervous."

7. Mark Martin
Points: 5571
Avg. Start: 11.0
Avg. Finish: 16.4

One of Martin's four wins at Lowe's Motor Speedway came in the 2002 Coca-Cola 600. The remaining three victories came in the fall 500-mile event in 1992, 1995 and 1998. This year Martin posted his first DNF since 1994 with a 28th-place finish. He is the current leader among active full-time drivers in laps led (1,148) and top-five finishes (15) at LMS. The Viagra car will sport the reverse "night race" paint scheme for the last time in 2005 on chassis RK-314, which is the same car that finished 11th at California in September.

Quotable: "I tell you what I love Lowe's Motor Speedway. In my opinion, it's the greatest place to race in the world. I can remember the first time that I ever went there in 1981 and thinking 'wow' this is just like a small quarter-mile track somewhere, except it's huge, but you could race just like that."

8. Matt Kenseth
Points: 5568
Avg. Start: 24.8
Avg. Finish: 14.8

Kenseth has captured six top-10 finishes at Lowe's Motor Speedway, including his first NEXTEL Cup win in 2000. Last year he finished 11th in this event. He has led eight races at the speedway for 167 laps and has suffered three DNF's, most recently in May (37th). Kenseth will race the same car (chassis No. RK-59) that dominated at Chicago in July before finishing second. The car also finished third at Michigan in August.

Quotable: "The track was definitely different when we raced there in the spring after they re-did the surface. We had a hard crash that night and that's certainly something that we don't want to repeat."

9. Jeremy Mayfield
Points: 5527
Avg. Start: 21.9
Avg. Finish: 21.8

Mayfield made his first Cup start at Lowe's Motor Speedway on October 10, 1993. This weekend he will start at the track for the 24th time. Mayfield is coming off a fourth-place finish in May, which marked his seventh top 10 at LMS. His best finish, of second, came in the fall 2000 event. The two races in 2000 were the only times where he led at the track, for a total of 53 laps. Mayfield will bring back the same car (chassis No. 108) that raced at LMS and won at Michigan this season.

Quotable: "I enjoy the Charlotte night race because it starts later – we don't have to deal with starting in the afternoon and finishing in the dark. The track changes too much then, and with all of the additional changes that Humpy has made to the track it's going to create enough of a challenge."

10. Kurt Busch
Points: 5460
Avg. Start: 27.9
Avg. Finish: 20.4

Busch's fourth-place finish last fall marked his first top 10 in ten races at Lowe's Motor Speedway. In 2002, he led 46 laps of his LMS total of 52 after starting a career-best 11th. This weekend Busch's No. 97 will sport a special IRWIN VISE-GRIP GrooveLock pliers paint scheme. He will be driving the same chassis (No. 62) that finished third at California in February. The team also tested this car along with the back-up at LMS last month.

Quotable: "This new track is definitely different; it's more like Texas than it is like Charlotte now, so we've got to revert back to some of those notes and combine that with what we learned in testing."

11. Kevin Harvick
Points: 3417
Avg. Start: 17.6
Avg. Finish: 18.0

Harvick posted his only DNF in nine races at Lowe's Motor Speedway in this event last season. His best finish, of second, and first of three top 10s, came in his first start at the track in 2001.

12. Jamie McMurray
Points: 3416
Avg. Start: 16.2
Avg. Finish: 11.0

McMurray captured his first NEXTEL Cup win at Lowe's Motor Speedway, in only his second career start, back on Oct. 13, 2002. Since then, McMurray has gone on to finish in the top 10 three more times, most recently in this event last year. In May, he finished 21st, which was his second finish of 20th or worse in six overall starts at LMS. He will return in chassis No. 208 which finished 18th last Sunday at Kansas. This car has also raced in two other events in 2005, finishing a best eighth in the second California race.

13. Elliott Sadler
Points: 3415
Avg. Start: 19.7
Avg. Finish: 23.9

In 14 races at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Sadler has either started in the top 10 (7 times) or below 23rd (7 times). He's only finished in the top 10 twice, both in 2004, with his best finish of fifth in the Coca-Cola 600. He has led in six races for a total of 71 laps.

14. Jeff Gordon
Points: 3336
Avg. Start: 7.8
Avg. Finish: 14.6

Gordon is tied with Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson among active drivers with four victories (three in the 600) and leads all with seven poles. Last year, he finished second in this event for his 13th top five. This year's Coca-Cola 600 was first time Gordon led a lap (49) since the 2001 edition of NASCAR's longest race. Overall, he has led in 17 of 24 races for 440 laps.

15. Joe Nemechek
Points: 3325
Avg. Start: 19.5
Avg. Finish: 19.8

In May, Nemechek appeared to be on his way to victory at Lowe's Motor Speedway, but a flat right-rear tire knocked him out of contention with eight laps to go. He ended up finishing 18th after leading 26 laps. It was the fourth time Nemechek has led a lap there and it was the first time he has led more than four laps in one event at the track. He captured his only top five at LMS in this event last year with a fifth-place finish.

16. Dale Jarrett
Points: 3319
Avg. Start: 21.2
Avg. Finish: 16.5

Jarrett is a three-time winner at Lowe's Motor Speedway. In 1996, he won his only Coca-Cola 600 after leading 199 out of a track total 530 laps. His first five of 36 starts at LMS resulted in five of his ten DNF's. Jarrett captured his 17th and 18th top fives at LMS in the last two races, including a sixth-place finish in this event. He will race a brand new car (chassis No. 61) that was tested at Kentucky Speedway two weeks ago.

17. Brian Vickers
Points: 3317
Avg. Start: 14.0
Avg. Finish: 29.8

Since Making his NEXTEL Cup debut at Lowe's Motor Speedway in 2003, Vickers' has only finished inside the top 20 once in four races - a 15th-place finish in May 2003. This year Vickers led the most laps in one race for the first time in his career after he held the No. 25 out front for 98 laps. He went on to crash out of that event, marking his second consecutive DNF at LMS. This weekend Vickers will be behind the wheel of the same car (chassis No. 353) that most recently finished third at California in September.

18. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Points: 3173
Avg. Start: 12.8
Avg. Finish: 17.0

This past May, Earnhardt Jr. posted his third finish of 30th or worse in 12 races at Lowe's Motor Speedway after finishing 33rd - snapping a string of three consecutive top-10 finishes. His third-place finish in this event last season was his career best at the track. One year after making his first career Cup start at LMS, Dale Jr. won his first career Cup pole for the May 2000 race and became the first rookie to win the All-Star race. He also scored his first of six overall top 10s in that event after leading 175 laps from the pole en route to a fourth-place finish. This weekend, Dale Jr. will be behind the wheel of the same car (chassis No. 40) that finished 31st at Dover.

19. Kyle Busch
Points: 3164
Avg. Start: 23.7
Avg. Finish: 30.3

Busch captured his best finish (25th) in three starts at Lowe's Motor Speedway this past May. He also led for the first time at the speedway in that event after he was out front for 55 circuits. This weekend, the Delphi colors will make their final appearance of the season on the same chassis that Busch captured his first NEXTEL Cup win with at California in September.

20. Kasey Kahne
Points: 3108
Avg. Start: 8.3
Avg. Finish: 23.3

Last fall Kahne dominated the race at Lowe's Motor Speedway, leading 207 laps before blowing a right front tire and crashing into the wall on lap 267. He scored his best finish, of 12th, in his first start at the speedway in the 2004 Coca-Cola 600. The Mopar colors, which were on his car last year in this event, will return again after making a surprise appearance last weekend at Kansas as the back-up car.

21. Jeff Burton
Points: 3106
Avg. Start: 24.9
Avg. Finish: 16.3

Burton has two wins at Lowe's Motor Speedway both coming in the Coca-Cola 600 in 1999 and 2001. He has competed in 23 races, led 357 laps and has scored 10 top-10 finishes at the 1.5-mile track. Burton, who tested last month at LMS, will be driving the same car (chassis No. 149) that has raced in two events in 2005, finishing a best 20th at Indianapolis.

22. Ricky Rudd
Points: 2998
Avg. Start: 18.3
Avg. Finish: 16.9

Rudd has finished 16th or worse in the last six races at Lowe's Motor Speedway, including three finishes of 33rd or worse. Rudd's last of his series leading 25 top 10s came in 2002 after finishing fourth.

23. Michael Waltrip
Points: 2969
Avg. Start: 19.1
Avg. Finish: 17.8

Waltrip ended a streak of three consecutive top 10s in the 600-mile race at Lowe's Motor Speedway this past May after finishing 36th. His best finish in the fall was a third in 1990, and he finished 28th last year. Overall, Waltrip has competed in 41 races at LMS capturing four top-five and 11 top-10 finishes.

24. Casey Mears
Points: 2863
Avg. Start: 17.6
Avg. Finish: 27.6

Mears posted personal bests at Lowe's Motor Speedway in 2004. The May race marked his best finish (seventh) and the fall race marked his best start (third). He led one lap and finished 21st in his sixth start at LMS this past May.

25. Bobby Labonte
Points: 2848
Avg. Start: 13.6
Avg. Finish: 12.7

Labonte finished second to race winner Jimmie Johnson in May in a race that marked the 10th anniversary of his first NEXTEL Cup victory. Labonte visited Victory Lane one more time at LMS in this event in 2000. He holds the best finishing average (8.1) among all drivers that have entered all races at Lowe's Motor Speedway since 1998. Labonte has three poles at LMS, including a sweep in 1999. Overall, Labonte has captured 16 top 10s and has led 804 laps in 25 races. He will race the same car (chassis No. 91) that finished 13th at Chicago and 16th at Michigan.

26. Sterling Marlin
Points: 2743
Avg. Start: 24.8
Avg. Finish: 20.3
