ARKANSAS-LITTLE ROCK TROJANS VS. APPALACHIAN STATE MOUNTAINEERS

The 2021 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament begins today in Pensacola, FL with four matchups at two different venues. At Hartsell Arena at Pensacola State College, the Appalachian State Mountaineers (13-1, 7-8 SBC) will take on the Little Rock Trojans (11-14, 7-11 SBC).

This season, the Sun Belt Conference divided into an east and west division, and teams only played their divisional opponents. That means that the opening round features teams playing each other for the first time this season. Appalachian State finished the regular season as the #4 seed from the east, while Little Rock finished as the #5 seed from the west. The winner will play tomorrow against Texas State, the top seed from the west.

The Mountaineers head into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament having lost four of their last five games. That included being swept by South Alabama, a loss to Georgia State, and a split with Georgia Southern in the final weekend. Appalachian State won the opener 84-78 before losing the finale 65-57. In that finale, Adrian Delph led the charge with 19 points, while Justin Forrest added 12 points and six rebounds. It was the first time all season that Georgia Southern defeated the Mountaineers.

When the calendar flipped to February, the Little Rock Trojans apparently checked out for around three weeks, losing seven in a row from February 5-26. Finally, on February 27 against Louisiana, the Trojans broke their losing streak with a 69-59 win to finish the regular season. The Trojans were competitive in all of those games, with 12 points being the biggest margin of victory.

In that win over the Ragin Cajuns, Nikola Maric led the way with 17 points. Ben Coupet Jr. added 14, while Marko Lukic and Marko Andric combined for 22 points and nine rebounds. The Trojans won despite hitting just three of their 17 three point attempts (17.6%). They limited the Cajuns to just 6-of-23 from beyond the arc.

The Sun Belt Conference is likely to send just one team to the NCAA tournament in two weeks. That team will be the winner of the conference tournament. Will either of these teams make a historic run into the Big Dance? It will start with a win today.

Mountaineers Try to Put Late Slump Behind Them
The Mountaineers have been on a bit of a slide heading into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and they get a tough matchup in the first round against Arkansas-Little Rock. Appalachian State is a team built to pressure and force turnovers, getting as many easy buckets as they can. The Mountaineers are second in the league in steals with 7.8 per game, and give up the fewest steals on offense with 4.9 per game. That has helped the Mountaineers give up the third fewest shots per game in the league (55.7).
As a team the Mountaineers rank fifth in the Sun Belt Conference in scoring at 69.3 ppg. They are eighth in field goal percent (41.7%), fourth in two point field goal percent (48.9%), and 10th in three point field goal percent (31.7%). Appalachian State’s attacking style has earned them an average of 18.3 free throw attempts per game, fourth most in the league.

The Mountaineers are led by a quartet of guards in Adrian Delph, Donovan Gregory, Justin Forrest, and Michael Almonacy. Delph averages 12.4 points per game, and is a 37.4% three point shooter. Gregory averages 11.6 ppg, and 5.3 rpg, and Forrest averages 11.7 ppg and 3.0 rpg. Almonacy averages 11.4 ppg and 3.8 rpg.

Defensively, the Mountaineers rank seventh in the league in scoring defense, allowing 68.6 ppg. Appalachian State is 12th in field goal percent defense (45.5%), 12th in two point field goal percent defense (52.6%), and fifth in three point field goal percent defense (34.6%). The Mountaineers, despite their pressure defense, are stingy in free throws allowed, giving up just 14.6 trips to the line per game (2nd). Appalachian State has also averaged a -4 rebounding margin in league games this season.

Little Rock Brings Big Frontcourt to SBC Tournament
The Little Rock Trojans stumbled throughout February, but managed to win their final regular season game heading into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Trojans sat at 10-7 overall at the end of January, but hit a slump at the worst time. The Trojans low point came in a weekend sweep by ULM, the league’s worst team. They won the regular season finale despite a very poor shooting effort. A lot of that had to do with the departure of All-SBC guard Markquis Nowell, who opted out midway through the season. The sophomore’s career at Little Rock is likely done, and the Trojans missed his playmaking ability.
The Trojans averaged 66.3 ppg in conference games this season (8th). They shot 44.1% from the field (5th), 51.6% on two point attempts (2nd), and 30.4% on three point attempts (11th). Little Rock attempted just 18.7 three pointers per game which was the second lowest number in the league. Little Rock was adept at getting to the free throw line, earning 19.7 attempts per game (1st).

Little Rock was led by Nikola Maric (6’10), who averaged 14.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg, and 1.6 apg. Ruot Monyyong (6’10) averaged 11.7 ppg and 11.0 rpg, while 6’7 forward Ben Coupet averaged 10.0 ppg and 3.5 rpg. While the Trojans have a formidable and big front line, their guard play has produced very little following the departure of Nowell.

Defensively, the Trojans rank third in the SBC in points allowed (67.1 ppg), sixth in field goal percent defense (43.0%), fifth in two point field goal percent defense (47.0%), and ninth in three point field goal percent defense (36.3%). Little Rock is stingy with the free throw line, with their opponents averaging a league lowest 14.2 trips to the line per game. The Trojans also enjoy a +3 rebounding margin.

This Conference USA showdown features two of the top teams in the West division. UAB (19-6) is looking to bounce back from an embarrassing 96-79 blowout loss to UTSA in which the Blazers lost outright as 4-point road favorites. Prior to the loss, UAB had won three of four and nine of their last twelve. Now they hit the road to face North Texas (13-7) who is also coming off a loss, falling to Marshall 73-72, although the Mean Green managed to cover as 2.5-point road dogs. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for North Texas. This line opened with North Texas listed as a 6.5-point home favorite. The public is all over the Mean Green at home, yet we've seen this line fall from 6.5 to 5.5. This sharp reverse line movement indicates respected money leaning UAB plus the points. UAB has buy-low value as a short contrarian conference road dog off a blowout. One advantage for UAB here: they rank 15th in the country in forcing turnovers. North Texas is one of the worst teams in the country at turning the ball over (276th). Ken Pom has North Texas winning by seven points, which means the market is a bit higher on UAB than the advanced analytics.

8:30 p.m. ET: Arkansas Little Rock vs Appalachian State

This is the first round of the Sun Belt conference tournament. Little Rock (11-14) enters as the 5th seed out of the West. Little Rock won their regular season finale over Louisiana 69-59 as a home pick'em play. The win snapped a horrendous seven game losing skid for the Trojans. Meanwhile, Appalachian State (13-11) enters as the 4th seed out of the East and also struggled down the stretch. After starting the season 12-5, App State went just 1-6 the rest of the way. App State fell to Georgia Southern 65-57 in their last game, failing to cover as 2.5-point road dogs. This line opened at a true pick'em. Respected money has poured in on App State, pushing the Mountaineers to a 2-point favorite. This game will be played at a neutral site (Hartsell Arena in Pensacola, Florida). App State will look to lean on their smothering defense in this one. Both teams are averaging roughly 70 PPG on offense, but App State is only giving up 64 PPG on defense compared to Little Rock allowing 69 PPG. Ken Pom has Little Rock winning by one point, but he has both teams virtually dead even in the rankings (Little Rock 224th, App State 230th).

9 p.m. ET: Colorado State at Nevada

This late night Mountain West matchup features two teams trending in opposite directions. Colorado State (17-4) is riding a five-game winning streak. Meanwhile, Nevada (14-9) has lost two straight, both of which came at the hands of Utah State. This line opened at a pick'em on Nevada's home court. Right off the bat, this opening line speaks volumes. Typically, oddsmakers will award at least a point or two for home court advantage, even in this COVID year with little to no fans in the stands. So the fact this line is a pick'em on Nevada's home court means Colorado State would likely be favored on a neutral court. The public is split and doesn't know who to back. But sharp money has sided with Colorado State as this line has moved to Rams -1. Ken Pom has Colorado State winning this game by two points, which provides some actionable value. He also has the Rams ranked much higher (60th vs 98th). The Rams hold an edge on both sides of the floor, averaging 76 PPG (Nevada 73 PPG) and giving up 65 PPG (Nevada 68 PPG).
