MONTREAL CANADIENS VS. OTTAWA SENATORS

The Ottawa Senators pulled off the rare upset on Sunday night when they defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in overtime. The Senators have been one of the worst teams in the NHL this season but the win could spark a turnaround in their season as they beat one of the better teams in the North Division. The Canadiens have struggled recently but still possess one of the more talented rosters in the North Division and hope to rebound after the rare defeat.
Canadiens hope depth can end skid The Canadiens boasted the best record in the North Division for most of the season but losing 4 of their last 5 games has sent them down to 4th in the division. The Canadiens have one of the deepest rosters in the NHL with depth both on the offensive and defensive end that can help them rebound and have been playing great in all facets of the game this year. The offense is led by Tyler Toffoli and Josh Anderson, who have 20 goals combined while Jeff Petry is playing incredibly on the offensive end despite being a defenseman, scoring 6 goals and adding 10 assists. Speaking of Petry, he leads a strong defense and along with Joel Edmundson, combine for 3.2 defensive point shares and 38 blocked shots. To cap off the strong overall play, the goaltending duo of Jake Allen and Carey Price have combined only allowed 2.5 goals per game. Senators defense has been awful this season The Senators have looked like a mess this season winning only 5 games so far. They have been playing poorly across the board but the defense has been a particular struggle for the Senators. The team allows 4 goals per game and outside of Nikita Zaitsev, haven't seen much on the defensive side. Moreover, the goaltending duo of Matt Murray and Marcus Hogberg has been playing terribly with Neighter goalie being able to save more than .900 percent of their shots. The offense has likewise not looked promising this season with a few bright spots but an overall struggling lineup. Brady Tkachuk, Evgenii Dadonov, and Tim Stutzle make up a respectable top line, scoring 17 goals this season but the rest of the lineup has struggled to find the back of the net. |

BUFFALO SABRES VS. NEW JERSEY DEVILS

The Buffalo Sabres will travel to the Prudential Center on Tuesday evening to take on the New Jersey Devils for the first game of a two-game set. This will be the fourth time that these teams will face off against one another as they played on Saturday in New Jersey and the Sabres won 3-2 after leading 3-0 for most of the game. The Buffalo Sabres (5-7-2, 12 points) are last in the East Division and are playing against the New York Islanders on Monday night. The New Jersey Devils (6-5-2, 14 points) are seventh in the East Division and are riding a two-game losing streak after dropping a 4-3 game to the Washington Capitals on the road after leading 3-1 going into the third intermission.
These teams have both played a handful of games since they were forced to postpone part of their season due to a COVID outbreak so the rust should be off. Let’s take a deeper dive into Buffalo and New Jersey to decide where we should be placing our wagers. PUBLISHED BEFORE FIRST GAME Passing the Puck Well The Buffalo Sabres have been shaky in the early stages of this season and one of the bright spots is the play of center Jack Eichel, who has been playing extremely well to begin the season. The team is missing center Zemgus Girgensons but it is a longer-term injury so the lines will get some chemistry along the way while he recovers. The second-overall pick from 2015 leads the team in points and is tied for seventh in the NHL in power play assists with 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) this season and has recorded a point in his last two games played. In the last game against the New Jersey Devils, he finished with an assist on a single shot on goal in 15:56 on the ice. Eichel has shown the ability to be one of the best players and needs to be more a scoring factor to complement their defense. The Devils are one of the best teams on the defensive sides of the ice so it will be an interesting matchup. Linus Ullmark and Carter Hutton have split time in the net this season for the Sabres and have been playing well as a goalie unit. Ullmark is 4-3-2 this season with a 2.61 goals against per game and a 90.909% save rate. In his last game against the New Jersey Devils, he allowed two goals on 27 shots. On the season, he allowed 24 goals on 264 shots. Buffalo, as a team, has allowed 43 goals this season, which is 10th in the league. They need to be better at killing power plays as they have allowed seven power play goals on 31 power plays opportunities (77.42 kill percentage). New Jersey is one of the lesser teams at scoring and these teams played against each other so much that Ullmark and co. have seen almost everything the Devils can throw at them. Step Up and Be Hughes The New Jersey Devils have been good in the early stages of this season and one of the reasons is the play of center Jack Hughes, who has been playing extremely well to begin the season. The Devils only have Nikita Gusev listed on the injury report as of this writing so it will be one of the healthiest they have been as a roster.. He leads the team in points and assists with 11 points (four goals, seven assists) this season and has been adding a point to his stats in the last three games.. In the last game against the Washington Capitals, he finished with a goal on three shot attempts in 19:37 on the ice. Hughes has shown the ability to be a leading player and needs to be more a scoring factor to complement their defense. Buffalo is a solid defense so it will be interesting to see how Hughes can attack it. Mackenzie Blackwood has spent the majority of time in the net this season for the Devils and have been playing above-average as a goalie unit. Blackwood was forced out due to COVID protocol but has played in the last three games and has a 2-1 record in that span. Blackwood is 4-1-1 this season with a 2.12 goals against per game and a 93.81% save rate, which is fourth in the NHL. In his last game against these Buffalo Sabres, he allowed three goals on 29 shots. On the season, he allowed 13 goals on 210 shots. New Jersey, as a team, has allowed 37 goals this season, which is seventh in the league. They need to be better at killing power plays as they have allowed 17 power play goals in just 42 opportunities (59.52 kill percentage). Buffalo shoots the puck well so it’ll be interesting to see how this game unfolds. |

It's the Battle of the Beatables in Detroit on Tuesday night, as the 5-12-3 Red Wings look to leapfrog the visiting 7-10-0 Predators to get out of the bottom spot of the division. Both teams are looking to get something going to salvage their pride this season. These teams have played each other twice this season, splitting the season series so far.
Predators Looking to Build on Win Over Columbus Nashville comes into this game after two-game series at Columbus, where they split the series. Their first time against the Blue Jackets ended in a shutout win for Columbus, but the Preds prevailed on Saturday, winning 4-2. The four-goal outing was the highest scoring performance for a struggling Nashville squad since their 6-5 win over Florida on February 4th. Calle Järnkrok led Nashville with two goals, while Colton Sissons and team scoring leader Filip Forsberg added one of his own. Forsberg has eight goals and seven assists on the year for 15 points, nearly double the point tally of the next highest scorer on the team, $8 million-man Matt Duchene, who has eight. Nashville has the third-worst offense in the league, scoring 2.29 goals per game, and the fifth-worst offense in the league, allowing 3.35 goals per game. They also have the second-worst penalty kill in the league at 68.3%. Juuse Saros will likely get the start in goal tomorrow. He comes in with a 3-5-0 record, allowing 3.47 goals per game with a save percentage of 88.189%. Detroit Looking to Crawl Out of Last Place Detroit comes into this game in last place in the Central Division, but a regulation time win would put them one point ahead of Nashville. With Dallas falling to Florida on Monday, the Red Wings could even jump totwospots above last place. Oh, to dream. Their last matchup with the Predators ended in a Detroit win, but was immediately followed by a three-game losing streak, which they snapped their last time out against Florida, winning 2-1. Mathias Bromé and Patrik Nemeth each scored goals, with team points leader Dylan Larkin adding an assist. His 11 points on the year (four goals, seven assists). He's the only Red Wing scoring in double digits, a sign of their offensive woes. They're second to last in scoring at 1.95 goals per game, while allowing 3.20 goals per game. Jonathan Bernier will likely get the start in goal. He's 4-2-0 on the year, allowing 2.74 goals per game with a 90.991 save percentage. |

Oddsmakers opened the Oilers as -111-moneyline favorites versus the Canucks, while the game's total opened at 6.5. The Canucks were a 4-3 loser in their most recent outing at home against the Jets. That made winners of bettors who got Winnipeg at +104 on the moneyline, while the total score (7) was good news for OVER bettors. Edmonton has climbed to second place in the North Division with three consecutive victories and six victories in its last seven with only a loss to the Winnipeg Jets during that stretch. Edmonton is 12-8-0 with 24 points and is coming off a Saturday 7-1 rout over the Calgary Flames. Connor McDavid scored a hat-trick for Edmonton in the victory. McDavid is first in the NHL in points and assists, and 2nd in goals scored. Edmonton is six points behind first place Toronto.
Vancouver is coming off a pair of losses to the Winnipeg Jets with the most recent a 4-3 overtime defeat. Winnipeg is 8-12-2 with 18 points. The Canucks are fifth in the North division three points behind 4th place Montreal 11 points behind first-place Toronto. The Canucks have played well in the attack zone scoring an average of 2.91 goals per game but are giving up too much on the blue line and between the pipes as Vancouver allows an average of 3.55 goals per game and will be facing an offensive powerhouse in Edmonton. Connor McDavid taking charge for Edmonton Connor McDavid has scored 12 goals which is second in the NHL and his 25 assists, which is first in the league and 37 points which is also first in the NHL. The Oilers are scoring 3.60 goals per game and the power play has scored 26.4% of the time with the man advantage. Close behind McDavid is last year's NHL leading scorer Leon Draisaitl, who has scored 10 goals and added 20 assists for 30 points. McDavid and Draisaitl each have scored five goals on the power play as has Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The Oilers blue line and goaltending needs to close ranks a bit as Edmonton is allowing an average of 3.10 goals-per-game and the penalty kill unit has been successful 76.6% of the time. Mikko Koskinen has played well between the pipes and through 15 games played in 7-8-0 with a 3.26 goals-against average in .905 save percentage. Veteran backup Mike Smith is 4-0-0 with a 1.36 goals-against average and .939 save percentage. Injury Report: William Lagesson and Kailer Yamamoto are questionable for Tuesday, while Ethan Bear, Zack Kassian, Oscar Klefbom and Slater Koekkoek are out indefinitely Canucks continue to struggle in their own end of the ice Vancouver has struggled all season in its own end of the ice as the blue line and goaltenders are allowing an average of 3.55 goals per game. Thatcher Demko through 12 games this season is 4-7-1 with a 3.31 goals-against average and .900 save percentage. Braden Holtby in 10 appearances is 4-5-1 with a 3.51 goals-against average and .893 save percentage. The penalty kill unit for Vancouver has been solid at an effective rate of 82.1%. In the attack zone, Vancouver is scoring an average of 2.91 goals per game but the power play has not been up to par scoring just 17.1% of the time with the man advantage. The leading goal scorer for Vancouver is Brock Boeser with 12 and Boeser is the points leader with 22. Defenseman Quinn Hughes has a team-high 19 assists. Vancouver has scored just 13 power-play goals this season led by Bo Horvat and Elias Pettersson with four apiece. Injury Report: Justin Bailey, Micheal Ferland and Tyler Motte are all out indefinitely while Travis Hamonic is due back in early March. |
