In their last action, Notre Dame was a 94-90 loser on the road against Eagles. They failed to cover the -7-point spread as favorites. The NC State Wolfpack will travel to the Purcell Pavilion on Wednesday night to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in an ACC matchup. These teams have not faced off this season so it will be interesting to see how they match up. The NC State Wolfpack are 10th in the ACC with a 12-9 record and an 8-8 conference record. They are riding a four-game winning streak after defeating the Pittsburgh Panthers 65-62 on Sunday. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are 11th in the ACC with a 9-13 record and a 6-10 conference record. They are on a three-game skid after losing on the road to the BC Eagles 94-90 on Saturday.
These teams have been playing very similar on both sides of the court this season so it will be interesting to see which team can go on a run. Let’s take a deeper dive into these programs to decide where we should be placing our wagers. Forward Thinking The NC State Wolfpack are hoping for junior forward Jericole Hellems to continue leading the offense. On the season he is averaging 13.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and a steal in 30.8 minutes on the court. He is shooting 46.5 percent from the floor, 42.4 percent from deep, and 78.8 percent from the charity stripe. In his last game against the Panthers, Hellems played 38 minutes and finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals. If he can put another nice game together, it will be a solid game for NC State. The NC State Wolfpack have been a decent defensive team as they are allowing 69.4 points per game this season. In their last game against the Pittsburgh Panthers, they gave up 62 points on 20-of-58 (34.5 percent) from the floor, 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from beyond the arc, and 30 free-throws. If they can figure out how to defend without fouling, they will be in a better spot here. Guard Up The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are hoping for junior guard Prentiss Hubb to continue leading the offense. On the season he is averaging 14.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 0.8 steals in 37.2 minutes on the court. He is shooting 40.1 percent from the floor, 34.4 percent from deep, and 74.4 percent from the free-throw line. In his last game against the Eagles, Hubb played 39 minutes and finished with 28 points, five rebounds, and seven assists. If he can put another nice game together, it will be something for Notre Dame to potentially build on. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been a shaky defensive team as they are allowing 72.6 points per game this season. In their last game against the Boston College Eagles, they gave up 94 points on 31-of-59 (52.5 percent) from the floor, 9-of-19 (47.4 percent) from beyond the arc, and 32 free-throws. If they can make this game an outlier, they will be in a better position against the Wolfpack. |

PROVIDENCE FRIARS VS. ST. JOHN'S RED STORM
The fans at Carnesecca Arena will be treated to a game between the Providence Friars and the St. John's Red Storm when they take their seats on Wednesday. Oddsmakers opened the Red Storm as -2-point favorites versus the Friars, while the game's total opened at 150. St. John's was a 81-58 loser in their most recent outing on the road against Wildcats. They failed to cover the +11-point spread as underdogs. Providence was a 83-68 winner in its last match at home against Musketeers. They covered the +1-point spread as underdogs. The Providence Friars will be on the road against the St John's Red Storm as they look to avenge their previous loss this season. The Friars lost to the Red Storm by 11 points in their first meeting with a score of 92-81. The Friars are 12-11 this year while they won their last game against Xavier by double digits. The Red Storm has lost their last two game but won seven of eight contest previously as they are 14-10 on the year.
The Friars are 11-12 ATS this season while they have been able to cover the over in 13 of 23 games. The Red Storm is 13-11 ATS this year while their ability to put up big numbers on the score board has allowed them to cover the over in 15 of 24 games. The Friars will look to take advantage of the losing skid that the Red Storm has found their self in. Friars Wanting Revenge The Providence Friars took an 11 point loss to the Red Storm earlier this season and will look to add to the recent struggle of St John's in this Big East battle. The Friars are not as offensively sound as the Red Storm but they can still get the job done with 71.0 points per game. The Friars are not a strong shooting team at 48.9% but their ability to pull down rebounds on the offensive allows them to get some of those points back. The Friars are grabbing 35.8 rebounds a game while pulling down 9.3 of those on the offensive end. Along with that the Friars drive to the lane looking for the foul as they are shooting 18.8 free throw attempts per game. Providence runs a two man combo with Guard David Duke and Center Nate Watson, these two have been putting of big numbers this year and have been contributing 33.8 of this teams points per contest. Duke has been producing 17.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists while Nate Watson has been putting up 16.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. The Friars have only lost one game this season when Duke is able to reach his average 17.2 points a game so Providence will look to get him the ball early while Watson cleans up down low. Red Storm Look to Ease Late Season Woes The St John's Red Storm has lost their touch in their last two contest as they lost by 5 points to one of the worst teams (DePaul) in the Big East and by 23 points to Villanova. The Red Storm were previously rolling through their schedule as they had won 7 of 8 games. St John's is one of the best scoring teams in the nation as they are producing 79.2 points a game but they fail to close out against opponents as they are allowing 77.4 points. The Red Storm should not be giving up this many points as they are forcing 16.8 turnovers with 9.5 steals per game. The Red Storm tends to start off slow with a splurge of offense in the second half at 40.1 points. The Red Storm is powered by Guard Julian Champagnie who is putting up big numbers with 20.0 points and 7.2 rebounds. Champagnie has been great this season but the Red Storm falls apart without him on the court as they struggle to get offense from anyone else. St John's will have to find someone else they can rely on while Champagnie gets his rest for those eight minutes per game. The answer could be Guard Posh Alexander who is putting up 11.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.4 assists. If Alexander could just produce a little more or the Red Storm could work a lineup to benefit them while Champagnie recovers, either way it goes he will need help. |

We have two teams in the middle of the PAC12 conference facing each other here. After what was projected to be a down year with Oregon State losing so much talent, they are 13-11 overall and 9-9 in conference play. This team has won three of its last four including an impressive 11-point road victory over Stanford. Utah just broke itself out of a four-game losing streak with a 10-point victory over USC at home. Normally this would be an impressive victory, but USC has now lost three of its last four and they are currently on a slide.
Finishing Strong While Oregon State won't be in March Madness without winning the PAC12 conference tournament, their play to end the season speaks volumes for what they can do in the conference tournament. In the midst of winning three of their last four, the one game they lost was to Colorado and that was only by four points. The Beavers' defense has been phenomenal over this stretch, allowing just 59 points per game. The Beavers rank 107th in offensive efficiency. They are 65th in turnover rate, 129th in offensive rebounding, 99th in free-throw attempts, and 31st in free-throw percentage. On defense, this is the 109th ranked unit. They are 144th in field goal percentage, 24th in three-point percentage, and 93rd in block rate. Senior Ethan Thompson is the heart and soul of this team. He gives them 15.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Jarod Lucas contributes 12.7 points on 39% three-point shooting and Warith Alatishe adds 9.2 points and 8.4 rebounds. Using Altitude to their Advantage Utah is usually a very good team at home both overall and ATS. However, this season they haven't been able to use the altitude to their advantage as they are 5-6 ATS at home and 7-4 overall. Four of these home wins came against inferior opponents. Nevertheless, the Utes have impressive victories this season and they've all come at home. This includes wins against Stanford, Arizona, and most recently USC. According to KenPom, the Utes are 75th in offensive efficiency. They are 105th in effective field goal percentage, 102nd in two-point percentage, and 17th in free-throw percentage. On defense, this is the 102nd ranked unit. They are 103rd un turnover rate, 51st in free-throw attempts allowed, 116th in block rate, and 44th in non-steal turnover percentage. The Utes are led by Timmy Allen. Allen sees nearly 35 minutes a game and gives them 16.7 points, 6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. Alfonso Plummer contributes 12 points on 37% three-point shooting and Branden Carlson adds 9.2 points with 4.6 rebounds. |

The Mountain West Conference’s New Mexico Lobos take on the Colorado State Rams in what will be the Lobos’ final game of the season and the Rams’ second to last game. This is a game featuring teams on the opposite ends of the spectrum with the MWC’s last place Lobos having to play the second place Rams in a game that only has significance for the Rams. New Mexico is coming off a Feb. 24th loss to Air Force by the score of 62-55 while Colorado St. just beat that same Air Force team on March 1st, 74-44.
Rams Could be Dancing Soon Give the Rams credit. They knew they had to play red hot basketball the last couple of weeks in order to have a shot at the NCAA Tournament. Well, according to Joe Lunardi’s most up-to-date bracket, the Rams are seeded 11th. They would need to lose to New Mexico for their tournament chances to die, but that seems like a stretch considering they’ve won four in a row and eight of their last ten. Unfortunately, they can’t win the MWC even if they finish with one more win than SDSU due to the pandemic schedule. It’s a disappointing factor of the pandemic that Rams head coach Niko Medved is quoted as telling the Coloradoan, “I don’t think that that’s fair.” In Sunday’s victory over Air Force, David Roddy had a strong double double with 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Guard Isaiah Stevens added another 15 points and Kendle Moore provided another 10 in a game that was close in the first half before the Rams blew it open in the second half. On the season, the Rams score 75 points a contest and are an effective team from the floor and three point line, averaging 48.3% and 37.2% respectively. Colorado St. has won three straight ATS and are 11-7 ATS on the season. New Mexico Wrapping Up a Difficult Season It is hard to debate that the pandemic made this the most difficult season ever in college basketball. Imagine having a season where you go 6-14 overall but can only muster two wins in the conference (2-14). Their most recent loss helped Air Force snap a ten game losing streak, but New Mexico has been almost as bad, losing eight of ten. It should come as no surprise that the university announced four days ago that head coach Paul Weir would not be returning next season. It’s been one of those years. They are ranked near the bottom in every offensive category in the country, scoring only 64.3 points a contest. Makuach Maluach was the only player on the Lobos to score in double figures against Air Force. He put up 20 points for his third consecutive 20-point game, Over that stretch, Maluach has averaged 24 points and averages a solid 15.7 points and 6.1 points, best on the team in both categories. The Lobos have lost four of five ATS lately and are 2-5 ATS over their last seven games. |

Two SEC teams go head to head Wednesday night as Mississippi State heads to College Station to take on the Aggies. The Bulldogs come in with a record of 13-12 overall and are 7-9 in conference play. They are fighting tooth and nail for an opportunity at the postseason, but may be in trouble at this stage in the game. The Aggies are in a similar spot at 8-7 overall and 2-6 in conference play, as they have been forced to play a shortened season and need wins to improve their season resume.
MSU lacks explosiveness on offense The Bulldogs are coming off of a loss to Alabama which clinched the regular season conference title for the Crimson Tide, and was a big blow to their postseason push. In the game, they managed to score just 59 points, in what was another of many offensive duds that they have had this season. They come in averaging fewer than 70, although they do offer a premier defense, but their lack of playmaking on the offensive end is concerning, and could end up haunting them as the experts pick the tournament teams in a couple of weeks. Mississippi State still has a slim chance to get into the nation tournament without winning their conference tournament if they close out the season with back to back wins, against Texas A&M and Auburn, but they should not bank on that, and may need to run the table in the SEC Tournament to auto-qualify. As they try to get the first of those wins, the duo of DJ Stewart Jr. and Iverson Molinar hop to lead the offensive charge, as they are the Bulldogs’ top two scorers, both averaging over 16 a game. It would be an understatement to say that this is a must-win game for them, and they must produce on offense in order to make it happen. Texas A&M has not played in a month, and it may affect them Wednesday Of all the teams that have been plagued by game postponements and cancellations due to COVID-19 this season, the Aggies may have been hit the hardest. They have not played a game since February 3rd in what was a win over Kansas State, but the layoff at this point in the season has thrown a wrench into absolutely everything. For one, they have played just 15 games and were only 8-7, so they had no chance to prove what kind of team they are, and it will definitely hurt their postseason chances. The second thing to consider, is the fact that they may come back completely out of sync. The Aggies were not a bad team when their season came to an abrupt halt, but now, we wonder what kind of team they will come out of the layoff as. It would be an incredible story if they were able to kick it into high gear and somehow make the NCAA Tournament, but no one is predicting that at the moment. They will most likely have to win out starting on Wednesday against MSU, and probably run the table and win the SEC Tournament. We will see what kind of a team they are after a month layoff on Wednesday night. |

The two teams sitting atop of the Big East's top teams will collide this Wednesday when the (9) Villanova Wildcats host the (12) Creighton Blue Jays, in a game that has conference championship implications. Creighton can smell it's first Big East title, but they'd have to win where no opponent has this season.
Villanova leads the all-time series 14-5, but Creighton has won the last two meetings. Creighton Could Crash The Party After splitting the Big East Championship three ways with Villanova and Seton Hall last season, Creighton (17-6, 13-5) has a chance to win their own for the first time in school history. The Blue Jays have enjoyed another impressive season under head coach Greg McDermott. They got off to a fast 10-2 start that included a non-conference win over in-state rival Nebraska, before breezing through a tough Big East schedule, sweeping Seton Hall, St. John's, and UConn. Despite coming off a tough road loss to Xavier, they're looking to sweep Villanova too. Creighton is one of the higher scoring teams in the nation (78.6). They shoot an impressive 48.4% as a unit and all five starters average double figures. Junior point guard Marcus Zegarowski runs the offense and leads the team in scoring (14.9) and assists (4.6). He scored 25 points in the win over 'Nova last month, while senior guard Mitch Ballock caught fire, hitting six three's en route to scoring 20 points. Senior guard Denzel Mahoney is second on the team in scoring (13.9) and he grabs 4.5 boards per game. Damien Jefferson and Christian Bishop start in the frontcourt. Jefferson is an athletic player, who can score in a variety of ways. He averages 12.3 points per game and he recorded a double-double in the previous meeting. Bishop also recorded a double-double, and he leads the team in rebounding (5.9) and field goal percentage (70%). Nova Needs to Bounce Back Despite a rocky month of February, Villanova (15-4, 10-3) still has their eyes on another national title. They have one of the best combinations of side and scoring in the country, while also having the best coach. Jay Wright's team hadn't lost since Thanksgiving weekend to, at the time, an unranked Virginia Tech team, who has gone on to enjoy a surprise season. Nova had passed every test since and won nine straight, but an upset at St. John's would be followed by two more road losses, raising eyebrows and questioning the legitimacy of the Wildcats as title contenders. Senior guard Collin Gillespie leads an experienced team and one of the best assist to turnover ratios in the nation. He's another one of those great Nova guards, and he averages 14.4 points per game, while leading the team in assists (4.7). Guard Justin Moore reminds us of Josh Hart, he does a little bit of everything well, and he averages 12.8 points per game. Tulane transfer Caleb Daniels adds 10.6 points per game. The Wildcats protect both the ball and the paint very well. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Jermaine Samuels may be a bit undersized, but they make up for it with versatility. Coach Wright praised Robinson-Earl, calling him "the centerpiece of our defense". The sophomore forward leads the team in scoring (15.5) and rebounds (7.9) He's coming off of a 16/16 game in the loss to Butler and he scored a career-high 27 points in the win over Marquette. Samuels averages 11.1 points per game, and grabs 6.3 rebounds per game. |

BIG Ten Basketball Wednesday night positions Maryland (15-10, 9-9) traveling to the Windy City for a battle with Northwestern (7-14, 4-13) from the Welsh-Ryan Arena. Maryland is looking for its sixth consecutive win over Northwestern. Over the last five matchups between these teams the Terrapins have won by an average of 12 points over the Wildcats.
Maryland is a four point road favorite with the total for this game right around 130.5 points. ESPN's Basketball Power Index gives Maryland a 59.1 percent chance of defeating Northwestern. Last year the Terrapins won both matchups by ten and nine points respectively. Terrapins Can Extend Win Streak To Six Maryland is looking to finish off the regular season on a seven game conference win streak. Since February 14th the Terrapins have defeated Minnesota, Nebraska twice, Rutgers, and Michigan State. Maryland’s recent win streak has not gone unnoticed either as the team received nine votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll. Regarding the NCAA Tournament there are projections listing the Terrapins as low as a nine seed, and as high as a six seed. Last time out for the Terrapins they completely took care of business against Michigan State. Michigan State is also a hot bubble team as the Spartans were on a 3-game win streak themselves prior to the loss. Maryland led by 10 at the intermission and held off a brief Spartan charge midway through the second half. The Terrapins held Michigan State to 33% shooting including 8 for 28 from behind the arc. As he did against the Spartans with 22 points, Eric Ayala leads the way in scoring for Maryland with 14.9 points per game. Ayala is clearly working well with Junior guard Aaron Wiggins who is averaging 13.4 points per game to go with his 5.8 rebounds. Maryland has one other double digit scorer in Donta Scott who is averaging 11.6 points per game on 6.8 rebounds per game. Wildcats End 13-Game Losing Streak Northwestern will look to end the regular season this week with two games against conference opponents as they play Maryland tonight at home, and also host Nebraska on Sunday. After beating Ohio State the day after Christmas the Wildcats went on a 13-game losing streak. Of those 13 games, 10 of those games were against a ranked opponent at the time. Last time out for the Wildcats they were finally able to snap the losing streak by defeating Minnesota using a second half resurgence. After trailing 31-25 at the intermission the Wildcats outscored the Gophers 42-28 to earn the victory 67-59 on the road. Northwestern made six straight free throws in the last 37 seconds to seal the victory. Boo Buie led the way against the Gophers with 25 points making all 12 of his free throw attempts. This raised Buie's average to 10.2 points per game on the season after his 19 point performance against the Badgers in the game before Minnesota. Chase Audige leads the Wildcats in scoring average with 12.4 points per game. Miller Kopp is also a double digit scorer averaging 11.9 points per game. |

In a battle of ACC teams trending in complete opposite directions, Boston College travels to Tallahassee to take on the 11th-rannked Seminoles. The Eagles won what was an emotional home finale and their senior game this past Saturday playing under interim head coach Scott Spinelli after recently firing Jim Christian. The win was just their fourth of the season, and they come into Wednesday night 4-13 overall and 2-9 in ACC play. The Seminoles are cruising their way to an NCAA Tournament berth as the ACC’s best team, and look to avoid a letdown at 14-4 overall and 10-3 in conference play.
Eagles got an offensive explosion from their bench in win over Notre Dame Boston College was determined to win their home finale Saturday, and win just their fourth game on Senior Day, after what has been a brutal 2020-21 campaign for them. Their bench nearly outscored the starters, as both Scott Frederick who had 18 points and Makai Ashton-Langford who had 16, had big scoring nights for the Eagles in the win. As a team, they had one of their best shooting performances of the season, shooting 52.5% from the field and over 47% from three. The Eagles now face a totally different animal in the 11th-ranked Seminoles, who are on their way to becoming regular season conference champs if they win their final games. The ‘Noles feature tremendous size and play ferocious defense, so Boston College is definitely in trouble in this one. But, if they can shoot the ball like they shot it against Notre Dame, the Eagles will at least have a shot at a monumental upset on the road. Seminoles look to avoid a letdown as they control their own destiny for a conference title Boston College enter this game with absolutely nothing to lose as they have been a poor team this season, while Florida State has everything to lose if they were to somehow be upset by the Eagles. As it sits right now, the Seminoles control their own destiny to winning the ACC Regular Season Championship, and if they defeat Boston College at home, where they have been sensational this season at 12-1, and then Notre Dame in the season finale, they will achieve their goal and be headed to the Conference Tournament as the clear-cut favorites. Florida State’s length on the defensive end will pay off for them big time up against an undersized Eagles team, and they should be able to take care of business if they defend the three and not give Boston Colleges any chances to beat them from deep. These two teams have not yet met this season, as their previous matchup wound up being cancelled, and so it will be interesting to see just how hard Florida State plays, as this is a tough game to get up for against a highly inferior opponent. |
