They didn't pay Eovaldi 17 million a year to work in the bullpen. Only an idiot would think that.

They could make him the closer and all that would do is weaken the rotation and still mean they need more arms in the pen. Real fans don't care about yesterday, they care about tomorrow and right now, today, their pen is a fuckin joke. That is a fact and everyone in baseball has acknowledged that. Until he makes moves, that doesn't change for anyone except the pink hats who follow blindly.

"Dombrowski said the team has candidates at closer in Ryan Brasier, Matt Barnes and even Steven Wright, and added that he could not say right now whether the Sox will go outside for a closer"

LOL - What a dumb fuckin decision that would be. A knuckleballer who would scare the hell out of you, a guy in Barnes that i fuckin hate or a guy who has had exactly a half season of good pitching in his career. Holy hell!!!

Listed right now on the depth chart at ESPN. That could be the worst bullpen in baseball right now. Only dumb fucks and pink hats would argue that

Boston
RP Matt Barnes, Tyler Thornburg, Brandon Workman, Heath Hembree, Brian Johnson
CL Ryan Brasier

There are DFA groups meeting now in the greater Boston area. People are given one of these when they walk in. It stands for Dumb Fucks Anonymous

For those who rely on others opinions, pink hats can be described as whoever you want it to be, not what others think. lmao

Another thing. No pink hat admits to it or actually realizes they are a dumb fuck. That is why there are meetings. Others all see it though.

So the Red Sox are 20 million higher than the 2nd payroll in MLB and they do not even have a defined closer? I guess we will see if they can buy another title, without a proven closer this time.

Yankees are the 2nd most valuable franchise in sports in the U.S. and the Red Sox have the highest payroll for the 3rd year running. I guess we know who is buying titles now.

Good to see his attitude with closers he had in Detroit has followed him to Boston. Shocking that a guy who spends a ton on starters and position players doesn't think the last 3 outs of the game are that important.

I totally agree. Especially when your starters only go 6 and your middle relief sucks!

And they have 1 lefty in the pen. A soft tossing lefty named Johnson. What if you need to bring the heat late in the game against a lefty? They have nothing and Johnson is never healthy. Dombrowski better wake the fuck up, and soon.

If the Red Sox are worried about the monster bullpen the Yankees are building to back up a record-setting offense, they sure don’t sound it.

Alex Cora, who led the Sox to the best record in baseball and a World Series title in his first year in the manager’s chair, spoke Thursday at the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America’s annual dinner and issued a dire warning to the rest of the league.

“If you thought last year was special, wait till this year,” Cora told the crowd.

The Red Sox won 108 games last season and ran away with the AL East, besting the second-place Yankees by eight games. Their offense led the AL in batting average, slugging percentage and runs scored, while their pitching staff was in the top three in ERA, strikeouts and ERA-plus.

They breezed through the playoffs, beating the Yankees in four games and the Astros and Dodgers in five games apiece en route to the title. Outfielder Mookie Betts won the AL MVP award, Chris Sale finished fourth in the Cy Young race despite an injury-shortened season, and Cora finished second in the AL Manager of the Year voting.

But apparently, none of that was enough for the defending champs.

“They’re never satisfied,” Cora said. “If you start looking at some of the players we have … I do feel we’re going to be better. We’re going to be better, and hopefully we have some good luck in October.”

They won the WS. They feel no urgency to win again this year after that. They know the pink hats will fuckin defend anything they do after winning. It always happens.

That's why they never repeat and their 4 recent titles are 4-5 years apart. They always feel like they got carte blanche from all the fuckin pink hats who are slobbering over the victory for a couple of years. After that wears off the real fans get restless again and they try to win. Rinse & repeat. It's sickening!

Red Sox have almost the same exact payroll as last year. They basically took the Kimbrel money and split it between Betts & Pearce.

I heard Dombrowski on the radio this morning and all they kept asking him were questions about the bullpen. I mean non stop and he said he doesn't see them spending any more money or adding any more significant pieces.

Wait, what? Are you fuckin kidding me? He feels comfortable with Brasier, Wright and Barnes in that role. When has bullpen by committee ever worked?

If you bet this team it better be 1st 5 wagers because innings 7-9 will be a fuckin nightmare!!!!!!!!

I also want to state that as a fan of a team that buys their gear and pays excessive amounts for tickets, you 100% have the right to be critical of them and what they are doing with the team. We are allowed to judge the President of the U.S. on his decisions, rate movies as we watch them and damn straight, talk about whether the moves our team is making are good or bad.

Comparing being critical to a GM to being critical of your doctor is almost as bad as saying a drug dealer is like someone who plays fantasy sports. Something is wrong with you mentally to think either is close. The doctor is a diagnosis. If you are critical of a GM it is simply your opinion. It is just a stupid comparison that i will talk no longer about.

Signing scrubs off the scrap heap will do nothing to make me feel better or change my opinion on Dombrowski and his choices/moves this offseason. I don't give 2 fucks about last year. You are paid this year to do your job and win THIS season. So far i am not satisfied with what has been done.

I am extremely disappointed in this offseason for Boston. Dombrowski is well known for failing miserably in one area and that is the closer role. It was a nightmare in Detroit and we are going to live the same nightmare here this season.

It is beyond belief to me that you watch arguably your 2 best arms in the bullpen walk in Kelly & Kimbrel and you do absolutely NOTHING to replace them. All because of one thing and one thing only, the luxury tax. It is a disgrace knowing how this team makes cash hand over fist.

They may have one of, if not the worst bullpen in the A.L. or all of MLB. There were guys on the market that could have been easily had on 1-2-3 year deals for 8-12 million. Guys like Ottavino, Robertson, Soria, Familia, Brach, Herrera, Holland, Boxberger and Romo. Any of them would have helped a much depleted bullpen out. A bullpen that is depleted to start with no proven closer and god forbid an injury or two happen.

All because they are already tops in MLB in payroll and they do not want to push the luxury tax and further. It is a joke and a disgrace to simply drop the ball in such an important area like the late innings of a game and do nothing. Nothing!!!!!!!

This pen will cost them 10+ games this season and they will be scrambling all year for a solution when there were many sitting right in front of them this offseason.

Last year was great and they will ride that wave this year knowing they have carte blanche from Red Sox nation after winning.

Well, they don't have that from this Red Sox fan. I am fuckin pissed, especially after seeing how deep and stacked the NYY pen is. They have what, 4 closers? It is a fuckin joke Boston and you are handing the division to NY. Congrats Dombrowski. Great job asshole and your grade from me this offseason?

These 2 teams won the offseason ... by a lot

By Mike Petriello
March 5, 2019

Now that Bryce Harper and Manny Machado have found new homes and all 30 teams are playing games across Arizona and Florida, it feels like the offseason is over. Yes, Dallas Keuchel, Craig Kimbrel and others are still unsigned, and they're quality players, but there's no one left who is going to significantly change a team's projections for the upcoming season. The 2019 rosters are more or less set, with most changes over the next few weeks coming in terms of injuries or tinkering around the edges.

With the biggest stars off the board, we can finally take a look at what's happened over the past few months and try to answer a question that's fun to look at each year: Which team improved the most this winter?

It's something of a complicated question, because it's not just about the 2018 win/loss record. Teams should never be expected to just repeat the previous season over again, and either way, promotions, retirements and free agency meant that the 2019 rosters for all 30 clubs looked different than the 2018 versions just days after the World Series ended. The question we're really trying to ask here is more along the lines of: Which team improved its 2019 projections over the past five months?

There isn't a perfect way to determine that, but there is a good-enough way. We can take a look at the projected 2019 standings posted at FanGraphs on Nov. 6, before any meaningful moves were made or qualifying offers were accepted, but after free agents were removed. (For example, the pre-Michael Brantley Astros were at the time projected to give 525 left-field plate appearances to Tony Kemp and Kyle Tucker, which is clearly not the case now.) Then we can compare that to what the projections look like today,
with all the new pieces in place.

By comparing those two numbers, we can see which teams improved their 2019 projections the most since the beginning of the offseason. Surprise, surprise: Harper's new team in Philadelphia heads the list in the NL, with the Yankees tops in the AL.

Let's start with those Phillies (+8), because their winter wasn't just about Harper. They also added Andrew McCutchen, J.T. Realmuto, Jean Segura and David Robertson, while shipping out Carlos Santana, Jorge Alfaro and J.P. Crawford. The shuffle also changed the playing-time expectations for players like Nick Williams (down from 581 plate appearances to 115). That's how a team that was projected for 78 wins five months ago, similar to its 80-win 2018, pushes all the way up to 86 wins and into the thick of the NL East race.

The Yankees (+8) may not have come away with Harper or Machado, but take a minute to realize what they did do. Nine teams on our list improved by two or more projected wins, but seven of them started from 82 wins or fewer, giving them more room to improve. The Yankees were already at 90 wins, and they still added eight more projected victories. That's really hard to do. (Note: The severity of Luis Severino's shoulder injury could affect the Yankees' projection and knock them back a win or two depending on how they replace his starts if he misses significant time.)

Severino will not be ready for opening day and now Sabathia is dinged up too. I expect them to sign Keuchel and I will be very surprised if that doesn't happen.
